Formal In Sneakers.
A fun way to help the American Cancer Society

On March 9th, at the Carlos Albizu University‘s campus and hosted by the Rotary Club of Doral, a great event known as “Formal in Sneakers” took place. This event theme, which as the name implies, featured its entire guests dressed in formal attire while sporting sneakers. A truly fun and exciting evening full of food, fun, art, music and plenty of entertainment; as we kicked off the 2012 School Spring Break. All the while raising funds to benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Doral / 2012 fight.
The event itself was designed to showcase the works of our young artist from our local schools including Rolando Espinosa K-8, John I. Smith K-8, Eugenia B. Thomas K-8, Doral Conservatory, Ronald Reagan HS, Devine Savior, Doral Middle School, Charles Hadley k-8, all told their where 10 schools represented. The ten pieces of art donated by each schools arts department competed for various honors and would be centerpieces of a silent art auction. While the proceed from the silent auction would go to the Relay for Life Event of Doral to fight cancer, the participants, many in attendance completed to the honors of being the school whose art raised the most funds as part of the contribution to the American Cancer Society. The honors include a special award from the Rotary Club of Doral to the school whose art raised the most money for charity in this event. To the young artist whose art piece sold for the highest donation.
Many of the “would be” young artist and their parents were present and buzzing around the artwork in curious hopes of the soon to be announced winners. While the auction silently progress through the night the crowd in attendance was entertain by a parade of incredible local talent including world renown trumpeter “Johnny Holliday”, jazz music ensemble “Indigo Trio” and the incredible sounds of DJ Extreme. Along our music we had singers and entertainers like Joseph Maurell, Paola Odoardi, Alicia Bruni, Clara Cowley. Ms. Ydabelle Hurd the Director of Talent Zone a part of Doral Conservatory School of the Arts, was a great support for the event.
The crowd was mesmerized by the martial arts exhibition put on by Master Frank’s Tai Kwon Do Demonstration team. We spoke to one of the organizers, the Rotarian Gerardo Reyes and he said he was satisfied with the results of the event, but mostly from the response of the community in this important cause. In Gerardo Reyes words:

The night and the event came to an end. The Rotary Club of Doral was pleased to announce its 2012 Formal in Sneakers Event silent Art Auction winner was Ms. Rhiana Suarez, from Doral Middle School. The piece of art that was the winning piece was: “The Rose” Photograph. “That was the first picture I took accidentally. After I saw it I was inspired to continue taking pictures of ordinary things” tells us Rhiana and she added: “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see”. This young artist aspires to continue her pursuit of art and is also attending the Doral Conservatory. Rhiana’s Mother Mrs. N. Suarez tells us “my daughter has always had an affinity for the fine arts and it is my true pleasure that her work could go to such a fine cause as the fight for cancer. She is so happy, I can’t begin to tell you how happy and proud I am.”
Mr. Reyes who is part of the “Rotary Club of Doral Relay for Life team, told us that “The Objective of Rotary” is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular our club, to encourage education for our children, support of the arts and community involvement. They have a four-way test of the things that they say and do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

ELEGANTES EN ZAPATILLAS
Doral tuvo manera divertida de ayudar a la Sociedad Americana del Cáncer

En las instalaciones de la Universidad Carlos Albizu, se llevó a cabo el 9 de marzo, un gran evento organizado por el Club Rotario del Doral. El nombre del evento “Formal en Zapatillas invitaba a los participantes a vestirse elegantemente, pero usando zapatillas deportivas. Todo lo recaudado iba a beneficio de American Cancer Society /Doral Relay for Life.
Fue una noche verdaderamente divertida y emocionante, llena de buena comida, diversión, arte, música y mucha alegría, ya que concedió con el inicio del receso escolar de primavera de 2012.
El evento en sí, fue diseñado para exponer las obras de nuestros jóvenes artistas de las escuelas locales del Doral: Rolando Espinosa K-8, John I. Smith K-8, Eugenia B. Thomas K-8, Doral Conservatory, Ronald Reagan, Doral Senior High, Divine Savior, Doral Middle School, y Charles Hadley K-8. Cada una de las diez escuelas participantes, a través de su departamento de arte, ofrecieron diez obras de arte que compitieron por varios honores y al final se destinaron como piezas centrales de una subasta silenciosa. El total de los ingresos de la subasta iban a ser donados a la causa de la lucha contra el cáncer, y la escuela que más fondos recaudara, seria acreedora de un premio especial del Club Rotario del Doral. Pero eso no era todo, el joven artista cuya pieza de arte fue vendida al valor mas alto.
Muchos de los “futuros” artistas y sus padres estuvieron presentes y pulularon alrededor de sus trabajos con la esperanza de ser los ganadores que pronto se anunciarían. Mientras que la subasta progresaba a través de la noche, un desfile de increíble talento local se fue presentando, como el mundialmente conocido trompetista “Holliday Johnny”, el conjunto de música de jazz “Trío Indigo” y los increíbles sonidos de DJ Extreme. A lo largo de la noche, cantantes y artistas de la talla de Joseph Maurell, Paola Odoardi, Alicia Bruni, Clara Cowley del Conservatorio de música, deleitaron a los presentes. Ms. Ydabelle Hurd, Directora de Talent Zone Doral Conservatory School of the Arts, fue una gran ayuda tambien.
El público estaba fascinado por la exhibición de artes marciales organizado por el Maestro Frank y su equipo de demostración de Tai Kwon Do. Hablamos con uno de los organizadores, el Rotario Gerardo Reyes y nos dijo que estaba satisfecho con los resultados del evento, pero sobre todo por la respuesta de la comunidad en esta importante causa. En palabras de Gerardo Reyes:
“El Club Rotario de Doral quisiera extender un agradecimiento especial a los patrocinadores, sin ellos, la noche no habría tenido tanto éxito reiteró. Gracias de nuevo por su apoyo”.
La noche, y con ello el evento llegaron a su fin, y la ganadora fue anunciada: Rhiana Suárez, de Doral Middle School. La obra de arte ganadora fue una fotografía denominada “La Rosa”. “Fue mi primera obra, tomada por casualidad, y la que me inspiró a seguir en esa dirección”, nos dice Rhiana, quien acorta… “El arte no es lo que ves, si no lo que haces que los otros vean”. Esta joven artista aspira continuar su vocación artística en la universidad, también es alumna del Doral Conservatory of Arts.
“Mi hija ha tenido siempre una afinidad por las bellas artes y es para mi un verdadero placer que su trabajo se destine a una causa tan importante como la lucha contra el cáncer. Ella está muy feliz, yo no tengo palabras para expresar lo orgullosa que me siento”, dijo Nelsy Suárez, madre de Rhiana.
Gerardo Reyes, quien es parte del equipo del Relay for Life Doral Rotary Club, nos dijo que el objetivo de Rotary “es estimular y fomentar el ideal de servicio como base de toda empresa digna, fomentar la educación para nuestros hijos, el apoyo de las artes y la participación de la comunidad. Tienen una prueba llamada “ las 4 preguntas” por la cual todo lo que hacen o dicen, lo hacen una vez conseguidas las respuestas afirmativas :
1. ¿Es la VERDAD?
2. ¿Es EQUITATIVO para todos los interesados?
3. ¿Fomentará BUENA VOLUNTAD Y MEJORES AMISTADES?
4. ¿Será BENEFICIOSO para todos los interesados?
