Florida Voters Challenged by Complex Amendments.
Florida is gearing up for one of our country’s most important elections, and the phones at our League office in Tallahassee are ringing off the hook. Why?
All voters, Latino voters included, are not calling about their presidential decision, or the days and places to vote early, they are calling with a cry for help to figure out what the proposed state amendments mean. (And some voters are just checking that they ARE registered…which you can still do and have time to update, at www.VamosAVotar.org or by phone with your supervisor of election)
All over Florida citizens are feeling like they are feeling under siege. “I thought I was pretty smart!” said one caller, “but I can’t figure these amendments out!”
With misleading names and lengthy summaries, the amendments–all generated by the Legislature–have made this year’s ballot the longest in Florida’s history.
Our callers’ problems can be traced directly to the Legislature. Because of a law they passed in 2011, legislators don’t have to follow the same rules as citizens’ initiatives, which require judicial review, accurate titles and clear 75-word summaries.
Although the League does not take positions on candidates or political parties, the organization does take positions on issues. Based on its research, the League has recommended opposing all of the amendments for three reasons. In the League’s view, none of these belong in the State Constitution. Second, some of them attack our basic freedoms; and third, others would risk harming Florida’s economic condition, our schools and our healthcare. Voters should also take time to read about the three Supreme Court Justices who are up for retention. It is important to note that early voting locations are only going to be open 8 days this election (from October 27 to November 3), so take time now to review the League’s non-partisan Voter Guide. Los votantes de la Florida tienen un reto frente a las complejas enmiendas.
La Florida se está preparando para una de las elecciones más importantes de nuestro país, y los teléfonos en nuestra oficina de la Liga en Tallahassee no paran de repicar. Porque?
Todos los votantes, incluyendo los latinos, no están llamando sobre sus decisiones presidenciales, o los días y lugares para votar. Ellos están llamando pidiendo ayuda para entender que es lo que éstas propuestas enmiendas significan. Algunos también llaman para revisar si están registrados… cosa que todavía se puede hacer, en la página www.VamosAVotar.org o por teléfono a su supervisor de elecciones.
Por toda la Florida, los ciudadanos se sienten oprimidos. Uno de los que llamaron dijo: “yo pensé que era bastante inteligente, pero no puedo entender ninguna de estas enmiendas.”
Con títulos engañosos y resúmenes largos, las enmiendas – todas generadas por la legislatura – han hecho que las boletas de este año sean las más largas en la historia de la Florida.
Los problemas que encuentran los que nos llaman radican directamente a la Legislatura. En el 2011 los legisladores aprobaron una ley donde ellos no tienen que seguir los mismos reglamentos que las iniciativas de ciudadanos, a quien se les exige una revisión judicial, títulos precisos y resumes claros de 75 palabras.
Aunque la Liga no toma posiciones con los candidatos o partidos políticos, la organización toma posiciones en temas. Basándose en su investigación, la Liga ha recomendado oponerse a todas las enmiendas por tres razones. Primero, desde el punto de vista de la Liga, ninguna de las enmiendas pertenecen en la Constitución. Segundo, alguna de las enmiendas van en contra de nuestras libertades básicas; y tercero otras arriesgarían la condición económica de la Florida, nuestras escuelas y cuidados de salud. Los votantes también deberían de tomar el tiempo para leer sobre los tres Jueces de la Corte Suprema quienes están en la boleta para la retención de sus cargos. Es importante tomar nota que los lugares para la votación temprana van a estar abiertos solamente por 8 días en éstas elecciones (desde el 27 de octubre al 3 de noviembre), así que tome el tiempo para leer la Guía de Votantes no partidista de la Liga.
