Councilwomen of Doral Attended NALEO 2014.
Learning Best Practices from other Latino Elected Officials.
The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) held its 31st annual conference in San Diego, California and the City of Doral was very well represented by all Councilwomen who attended and had an active participation on the event. It allowed them to bring back home numerous ideas and projects that other Latino officials have implemented around the country.
“The NALEO conference was truly an amazing opportunity for us to learn best practices from other elected officials, who shared their unique perspectives from their geographic areas on a multitude of topics including immigration reform, ethics and transparency in government, women in leadership roles, best financial practices, and much more. One of the biggest “takeaways” I had from NALEO this year was regarding a balance between maintaining a healthy city reserve and providing adequate services to our constituents” commented Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez.
The presentation about the NALEO Service Project to Support US Veterans, Active Service Members and their families inspired Councilwoman Sandra Ruiz to prepare special giveaway bags to distribute among Military and Veterans families in attendance at the Doral Fourth of July celebration, among several other ideas and projects she looks forward to bring to the city.
Vice Mayor Fraga felt honored to attend the conference: “It served as a venue for me to enhance my knowledge and leadership skills as I discussed ethical approaches to public policy with other Latino elected officials. It was also a fantastic opportunity to gain insight into the issues that challenge many diverse communities across our great nation and to brainstorm about how to use public policy to meet those challenges. I came back with many innovative ideas that will surely enhance the lives of our City of Doral residents and I am ready to work to implement them.”
Councilwoman Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera brought back several specific ideas like bike racks on the trolley that could reduce the cost of the bike rental program the city is implementing soon. “One interesting point also was that many cities across the country have elected treasurers, that only handle the budget and are elected to be more detailed as so far as the budget.” She considers the event was “a very positive meeting. We are looking into the possibility that in the near future we have a NALEO conference in Miami. We are looking forward to having a more active role in NALEO. I think we need to work a little bit more on issues that affect Hispanics nationally. It was very rewarding to see all of us working together for the betterment of our city. “
The participation of all councilwomen in this event is a step forward on the consolidation of the image of the City of Doral as an example of elected officials working in harmony as a team for the progress of a community.

Concejales de Doral asistieron a NALEO 2014:
Aprendiendo de Oficiales Electos Latinos las mejores prácticas!

La Asociación Nacional de Oficiales Electos Latinos (NALEO) celebró a finales de Junio su 31va. Conferencia anual en San Diego, California y la Ciudad de Doral estuvo representada, con la asistencia de todas las concejales. Esto les permitió aprender sobre numerosas ideas y proyectos que han sido implantados con éxito por otros oficiales electos Latinos en sus jurisdicciones en todo el país.
“NALEO fue una oportunidad de oro para aprender las mejores prácticas de otros Oficiales Electos Latinos. Ellos compartieron su perspectiva sobre múltiples tópicos, incluyendo la reforma migratoria, ética y transparencia de gobierno, mujeres en roles de liderazgo, mejores prácticas financieras en administración pública y mucho más. Una de los mayores aprendizajes para mi este año incluye la importancia del balance entre mantener reservas financieras saludables para la ciudad y a la vez proporcionar adecuadamente todos los servicios a nuestros residentes,” comentó la Concejal Ana María Rodríguez.
Para la Concejal Sandra Ruiz, la presentación sobre el “Proyecto NALEO de Servicios para Veteranos, Miembros del Servicio Activo y sus Familiares” sirvió de inspiración para la preparación de bolsas de regalo para distribuir a las familias de Militares y Veteranos que asistieron a la celebración del Cuatro de Julio en Doral, además de muchas otras ideas y proyectos que espera muy pronto poder traer a la ciudad.
Asistir a la conferencia fue un honor para la Vice-Alcalde Christi Fraga: “Me permitió ampliar mi conocimiento y habilidades de liderazgo al poder discutir enfoques éticos en políticas públicas con otros oficiales electos Latinos. Resultó una fantástica oportunidad para comprender las situaciones que afectan muchas comunidades diversas a lo largo del país y para compartir ideas sobre el uso de políticas públicas para poder superar esas dificultades. Traje muchas ideas innovadoras y estoy lista para trabajar para ponerlas en operación.”
La Concejal Bettina Rodríguez Aguilera trajo varias ideas específicas, como por ejemplo los ‘racks’ para bicicletas en el trolley, que permitirán reducir el costo del programa de renta de bicicletas próximo a implantarse en la ciudad. “Otro punto interesante fue conocer que muchas ciudades cuentan con tesoreros como oficiales electos, dedicados a la administración detallada del presupuesto. Este evento fue una reunión muy positiva. Contemplamos la posibilidad de traer la conferencia NALEO a Miami en el futuro. Queremos participar más activamente en la organización, porque tenemos que trabajar más en los problemas que afectan a los hispanos a nivel nacional. Fue muy gratificante trabajar juntas en este evento.”
