Doral Awarded WCCD Smart City Certification at Council Meeting
Doral, FL— With Doral’s World Council on City Data (WCCD) ISO Smart City Certification (ISO 37122 – Indicators for Smart Cities) announced earlier this Summer, the WCCD President and CEO Dr. Patricia McCarney, joined today’s City Council Meeting to present the certification officially. Doral is the first American city to achieve WCCD’s ISO 37122 Smart city certification and is among a handful of Early Adopters worldwide.
“Throughout the WCCD global network of more than 100 cities across 35 countries, Doral is an excellent example of a city that embraces data as a critical basis for decision-making, policy change, and tracking progress on key city initiatives. It should also be a point of pride for City Council, Staff, and residents that Doral is the first city in America to achieve this certification as an “Early Adopter,” stated Dr. Patricia McCarney, President and CEO, World Council on City Data. “We look forward to our continued work together as your city prioritizes a smart and sustainable future for your citizens. Congratulations to you, Mayor Bermudez – and your entire team – on this exceptional accomplishment.”
In her presentation to Council, Dr. McCarney highlighted that Doral is already leading across several measures that align with the city’s smart city strategy. Doral’s WCCD Smart City Certification and its accompanying data demonstrate the city’s commitment to a smarter future, highlighting achievements from the ability to procure building permits online to Wi-Fi connectivity on public transit.
“For Doral, being a smart city is not only rooted in our commitment to technology but more specifically, how it can be used to improve the quality of life of our residents,” said Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez. “These advanced initiatives help Doral remain a Model City that provides a safe and high-quality environment that is attractive to people looking to move from other places in the country as well as businesses looking for a new location to invest.”
The City of Doral has been a long-standing member of the World Council on City Data, first obtaining ISO 37120 certification in 2017 and annually in subsequent years. The certification process was spearheaded by Doral’s Information Technology Department, with support from the City’s Planning & Zoning, City Clerk, Parks & Recreation and Finance departments, as well as Miami Dade County Fire, Environmental, Solid Waste, and Water and Sanitation. All these entities played a crucial role in gathering the data for reporting, which was instrumental to the success of the certification process.
