Executive order would remove some Spanish-language services

DORAL, FL – Friday started with the expectation of an executive order that would remove some Spanish-language services and documents if organizations and government agencies that received federal funding choose to offer them only in English as now, they would be able to.

The executive order-if signed by Donald Trump- would designate English as the official language of the United States, according to the White House. The move matches what happened last month when within hours of Trump’s inauguration, the new administration took down the Spanish language version of the official White House website.

At the time, the White House said it would bring the Spanish language version of the website back online after some Hispanic advocacy groups raised eyebrows, but as of Friday it hadn’t been restored. In his first term, Trump also shut down the Spanish language version of the website that was only put back online after Joe Biden took office.

The order would cancel out a mandate from former President Bill Clinton that required the government and organizations that received federal funding to provide language assistance to non-English speakers.

Designating English as the national language “promotes unity, establishes efficiency in government operations, and creates a pathway for civic engagement,” according to the White House, reported AP.
