Doral Family Journal received recognition for its support to public education.

The 3^RD Annual Golf Tournament  “Hit the Green for Education” had as its main purpose to benefit  The Foundation for New Education Initiatives, Inc. This Foundation begun on 2008 under Superintendent Alberto Carvalho leadership to raise money through innovative programs for MDCPS students and families. Some of those programs include:

1-The Cultural Passport:  an educational initiative, in partnership with Miami-Dade’s various arts and cultural institutions, to provide all K-12 students different, age- appropriate cultural experiences each school year.

2_ Mini-Grants for Schools: to promote innovative educational activities that foster academic achievement.

3- The Success Academy/ Saturday Tutoring:  designed to boost student achievement and give students the academic tools they need to succeed in the classroom.

4-Teacher Incentive Fund: A five-year initiative in 38 high-need schools.

5- Support for needed families and students by providing financial help, referrals and other types of aid for students and their families in crisis.

6- The Parent Academy: A year round initiative providing free classes and workshops at more that 200 sites throughout the county.

7-Wireless Technology in all Classrooms: initiative that aims to raise $7 millions by January 31^st 2012 in order to be matched 10x through the federal E-Rate Program and give all students access to wireless capabilities starting in high schools.

8_ Posse Foundation: deserving students are awarded four year, full tuition leadership scholarships by 33 partner universities and colleges in 17 states.

9- Dial-A-Teacher: An online, free service provided by M_DCPS, in cooperation with UTD and WLRN

Sixty enthusiastic golfers gathered on December 5^th   at the Doral Golf Resort &Spa, Greg Norman Designed White Course to play and collaborate to the noble cause of education. Cigna Health care won 1^st place after many hours of playing under excellent weather condition. City of Doral Manager, Yvonne Soler McKinley was part of the Miami Havana Cigar Company team, which got an honorable 4^th place. One of her teammates, Mr.   Hector Capó emphasized the importance to help and support superintendent Carvalho initiatives. According to Mr. Capó the public school system has been suffering from out of control expending, but since Mr. Carvalho took the leadership and made several reforms, the outlook is different and very optimistic. Lisa Thurber  , District Director for the Office of Community Engagement at Miami-Dade County Public Schools and one of the organizers, said that  the collaboration and involvement of the community is vital for the success of all programs and she made a call to support the success of those programs by donating at helpdadeschools.com.

The title sponsor, Rick Case Automotive Group, offered an opportunity to win one of five Rick Case vehicles for a hole-in-one, but unfortunately no one reached the goal. The sophomore sponsors were: Coastal Construction Company and Doral Family Journal. Freshman sponsor was Baptist Health South Florida and finally Price sponsors were Brainchild and Doral Golf Resort and SPA/ A Marriot Resort. 

Mr. Alberto Carvalho was very pleased and thankful with all the sponsors and participant. He sincerely thanked those involved for sacrificing their time out of their busy schedules for this good and noble cause. He emphasized that money raised from participation in this tournament were going in “sound” investments that will preserve and extend art and music in Miami Dade Schools as well as technologies and cultural programs.

 Superintendent Carvalho acknowledged the contribution of the Doral Family Journal, as a newspaper that is supporting every initiative and event related to children’s education. He has recognized the times we were participating in events, attending workshops, spreading this message. Mr. Carvalho knows as the newspaper that has commitment to public education, to supporting PTA/PTSA goals and activities, The Parent Academy, and other organizations. This was the reason that we were honored on this important day and we were so proud. Knowing that we are doing something good and seeing that the people are really happy for your success, that’s the most reward thing in the world.

Programa “HIT THE GREEN”: Un hoyo en uno para la educación.

 Doral Family Journal  recibió un reconocimiento por su apoyo a la educación pública.

El 3er Torneo Anual de Golf  “Hit the Green for  Education” fue realizado a beneficio de la Fundación for New Education Initiatives, Inc. Esta Fundación se inició en 2008 bajo el auspicio del Superintendente Alberto Carvalho, para recaudar dinero a través de programas innovadores para los estudiantes y las familias MDCPS. Algunos de estos programas incluyen:

1- El Pasaporte Cultural: una iniciativa educativa, en colaboración con diversas instituciones culturales de Miami-Dade , para proporcionar a todos los estudiantes K-12, la experiencias culturales en cada año escolar.

2 – La Academia del Éxito /  Tutorías Sabatinas: programa diseñado para mejorar el rendimiento estudiantil y dar a los estudiantes las herramientas académicas necesarias para tener éxito en el aula.

3 – Apoyo a las familias y  estudiantes necesitados, proporcionando ayuda financiera, consultoría, etc.

4 -Tecnología inalámbrica en todas las aulas: iniciativa que pretende recaudar $ 7 millones al 31 de enero de 2012 para poder multiplicar ese monto  10 veces gracias al programa federal E-Rate Program y dar a todos los estudiantes el acceso a la tecnología  inalámbrica, comenzando  en las escuelas secundarias.

Sesenta entusiastas deportistas  se reunieron el 5 de diciembre en el Doral Golf Resort & Spa, Greg Norman Designed White Course para colaborar a la noble causa de la educación. Después de varias horas y un clima envidiable, Cigna HealthCare ganó el 1er lugar después de muchas.

La Administradora de Ciudad de Doral, Sra. Yvonne Soler McKinley fue parte del equipo de Miami Havana Cigar Company, que consiguió un honorable 4 º puesto.  Uno de sus compañeros de equipo, el Sr. Héctor Capó destacó la importancia de ayudar y apoyar las iniciativas de Superintendente de Carvalho. Según el Sr. Capó el sistema escolar público ha estado sufriendo bastante a causa del descontrol de gastos , pero desde que el Sr. Carvalho tomó el liderazgo e hizo una serie de reformas, el panorama es diferente y muy optimista.

Lisa Thurber, Directora de Distrito de la Oficina de Participación Comunitaria en  Miami-Dade County Public Schools y una de los organizadoras, dijo que la colaboración y la participación de la comunidad es vital para el éxito de todos los programas e  hizo un llamado a apoyar el éxito de esos programas mediante la donación a :  helpdadeschools.com.

El patrocinador “Principal”, Rick Case Automotive Group, que ofreció la oportunidad de ganar uno de los cinco vehículos de Rick Case por “ hoyo en uno” , pero desafortunadamente no se llegó a la meta. Los patrocinadores “Sophomore”  fueron: Coastal Construction Company and Doral Family Journal. El patrocinador “Junior” fue Baptist Health South Florida y, finalmente, los patrocinadores “Fresman” fueron Brainchild Doral Golf Resort and SPA / A Resort Marriot.

El Sr. Alberto Carvalho estaba muy contento y agradecido con todos los patrocinadores y participantes. Sinceramente dio las gracias a los involucrados por sacrificar su tiempo de sus ya   apretadas agendas para esta noble e importante causa. Hizo hincapié en que el dinero recaudado de la participación en este torneo se va a invertir en  preservar y extender el arte y la música en las escuelas de Miami Dade  County, así como las tecnologías y los  programas culturales.

El Superintendente Carvalho reconoció la contribución de  Doral Family Journal, como el  periódico que  siempre está presente apoyando todas las iniciativas y eventos relacionados con la educación. Ha reconocido el tiempo empleado al participar en ceremonias,  talleres, y el esfuerzo  entregado al difundir su mensaje. El Sr. Carvalho reconoce que el periódico que tiene un gran  compromiso con la educación pública, que apoya constantemente al PTA / PTSA, en sus metas y actividades, lo mismo con “La Academia de Padres”, y otras organizaciones de esa índole… Esta fue la razón principal  por la cual fuimos honrados este día tan importante y ese reconocimiento nos ha llenado de orgullo. Sabiendo que se está haciendo un buen trabajo y viendo que la gente está muy feliz por ese  éxito, esa es la mejor recompensa en el mundo.
