The City of Doral has again the chance of hosting an international Judo event. This time it is the IJF Grand Masters Judo Championship, and will take place between November 6^th and November 11^th 2012 at the Doral Resort and Spa.  In this event, athletes between 35 and 75 years old gather to compete, showing that preserving great physical condition and constant training are the key to successfully stay in the highly competitive world of sports for a lifetime.

The vast majority of these competitors have been former world and national champions in their countries. Many of them were Olympians as well. For the evolution and propagation of the practice of Judo worldwide, having so many active older athletes is a source of pride and satisfaction. These athletes are champions, who have made the history of Judo and created the path of progress for the sport.

“The City of Doral has welcomed us very well. The Mayor and all Council Members have always supported us. We therefore decided to continue bringing Judo events to the city” says Mr. Jose Humberto Rodriguez, CEO of USA Judo and continues: “Around the world we call Veterans all Judo athletes ranging from 35-75 years of age, in the US we call them Masters. These athletes will come from as far as Australia, Spain, Russia, Italy, France and Brazil. Obviously there will be athletes from the U.S. and Canada. This is a very nice competition because there is great camaraderie among all athletes. They meet once a year to compete and fight hard, but then they have their time to share amicably, network and talk about their experiences. We expect the participation of many local athletes from Miami, who previously were highly competitive and have enthusiastically been preparing and training hard for the event”.

For residents and businesses of Doral, hosting this event not only represents the direct economic benefit from the presence in the city of more than 800 athletes, their families and other sports enthusiasts “these people from Europe or Oceania, would not have discovered Doral if not for their participation in this event”, but also indirectly benefits the employees of establishments and suppliers of goods and services. With the presence of these visitors “everybody wins, because the economic activity of the city is impacted positively on those days. Visitors during the week make life in the community and during that week leave their money in Doral. This event benefits the city’s businesses, generating prosperity and taxes that the county needs “said Mr. Rodriguez.

In addition, another benefit for the community is to have access to attend an entertainment that is both instructive and beneficial, fostering a healthy lifestyle. Witnessing the performance of these athletes thrills the audience, and allows the younger ones to realize the importance of being in good physical condition to continue participating on highly competitive events all their life. “If you stay active at that age, your health will benefit. We highlight those benefits to the public so they can relate the positive contribution to the city of holding  this event here.”

Furthermore, Mr. Rodriguez comments the potential long-term positive economic impact for the city of the presence of these adult athletes: “Many participants who come to visit in these events are entrepreneurs, executives, owners of large companies, decision-makers. These people do sports as a hobby, but on their daily lives take business decisions, make investments. During these events, communities can approach them and show the potential of the city to capture their interest and involve them, and thus benefit the host community. “

“Sports industry executives have no knowledge of investment possibilities and opportunities that communities can offer. It is necessary that those who are in the area of finance, economy, and investment approach these visitors, to show them the potential benefits of getting involved with the community to help it grow. Very few of them are interested only on philanthropic causes, they also want to invest. The businesses in the community who get involved in these sport events have direct access to these participants that are potential investors”.

Mr. Rodriguez believes that one aspect that has not been exploited yet in Doral is the economic development potential of getting more involved in sporting events that take place in the city. He suggests the organization of networking activities in parallel with the competition to foster business exchange, “there have to be some kind of meeting opportunities with the athletes. Somebody has to step up and coordinate that network effort, a meeting where city businessmen come to know these visitors who came to compete and may potentially be interested in investing in Doral. These athletes are not only people in a tatami sweating and falling to the floor. They are men and women of business, they are decision makers. It is a matter of taking the opportunity of having them gathered and sell them the idea of investing in the city. It is an opportunity that is priceless. This is a vision, a different approach. You just need the desire of city business owners, chambers of commerce and other community leaders to take advantage of this occasion”, Mr. Rodriguez says, stressing that the support of the City authorities and Doral residents for the realization of these events has been extraordinary “I am very thankful of the support the community is giving us, but I also want them to take advantage of this unique chance of bringing additional economic income to the community”.

“If only 5% of those visitors become interested in buying a house, creating a large business, or building alliances with local companies, it would still be beneficial. We need to create awareness in the businesses in the area to attend the event and mingle with these people in a relaxed atmosphere, to show a first glimpse of the economic potential of the city of Doral. It is a unique opportunity, a different approach to business development. It would capture the attention of people beyond sport and make a positive impact. The direct economic benefits of those visitors can be seen just that week of the event, but if we get them interested in doing business within the city, we can see the long term benefit of hosting these events here. Seize the opportunity” concluded Mr. Rodriguez.

Fomenta las oportunidades de negocio en Doral

Nuevamente la Ciudad de Doral será anfitriona de un evento internacional de Judo. En esta ocasión se trata del Campeonato Mundial de Masters de la Federación Internacional de Judo (IJF), a realizarse entre el 6 y el 11 de noviembre 2012 en el Doral Resort and Spa. En este evento los atletas entre 35 y 75 años se congregan para competir, demostrando que al conservar una excelente forma física y un entrenamiento constante es posible mantenerse exitosamente en el mundo deportivo de alta competencia durante toda la vida.

La gran mayoría de estos competidores han sido campeones mundiales y nacionales en sus países, inclusive muchos de ellos fueron atletas Olímpicos en el pasado. Para la difusión y evolución de la práctica del Judo a nivel mundial contar con tantos atletas mayores activos constituye un motivo de orgullo y satisfacción. Son atletas campeones, que han construido la historia del Judo mundial y que marcan el camino del progreso del deporte.

“La Ciudad de Doral nos ha acogido muy bien. La Alcaldía y todos los miembros del Concejo nos han apoyado. Por ello hemos decidido seguir trayendo eventos de Judo a la ciudad” manifiesta el Sr. José Humberto Rodríguez, CEO de USA Judo y prosigue: ” A nivel mundial llamamos Veteranos a los atletas de Judo mayores de 35 años. Vendrán atletas de tan lejos como Australia, España, Rusia, Italia, Francia, Brasil y obviamente EEUU y Canadá. Aquí los llamamos Masters. Esta es una competencia muy bonita porque hay una gran camaradería entre todos los atletas. Se encuentran una vez al año. Obviamente compiten, se pelean duro, pero después tienen su rato de compartir amigablemente, conversando sobre sus experiencias. Se espera la participación de muchos atletas locales de Miami, quienes anteriormente fueron de alta competencia y con mucho entusiasmo se han estado preparando y entrenando fuertemente.”.

Para los residentes y empresarios de Doral, la realización de este evento no solamente representa el beneficio económico directo proveniente de la presencia en la ciudad de más de 800 atletas, sus familias y otros entusiastas del deporte “personas de Europa, de Oceanía, que no habrían descubierto Doral de no ser por su participación en este evento” sino también indirectamente beneficia a los empleados de los establecimientos y proveedores de bienes y servicios. Con la presencia de estos visitantes “todos ganamos, porque la actividad económica de la ciudad se ve impactada positivamente durante esos días. Los visitantes durante esa semana hacen vida en la comunidad y durante esa semana dejan su dinero en Doral. Este evento beneficia los negocios de la ciudad, generando prosperidad e impuestos que el condado necesita” comenta el Sr. Rodríguez.

Adicionalmente, otro beneficio para la comunidad es tener acceso a presenciar un entretenimiento saludable, instructivo y beneficioso. Presenciar la actuación de estos atletas llena de entusiasmo y adrenalina a la audiencia, al tiempo que permite a los más jóvenes darse cuenta de la importancia de estar en buenas condiciones físicas para seguir participando en Alta Competencia durante toda la vida. “Si te mantienes activo a esa edad, tu salud va a beneficiarse. Esos beneficios queremos resaltarlos para que el público relacione el aporte positivo a la ciudad de la realización de este evento aquí.”

Resalta también el Sr. Rodríguez el potencial de un impacto económico positivo a largo plazo para la ciudad de la presencia de estos atletas adultos: “Muchos participantes que vienen a las comunidades de visita en estos eventos son empresarios, ejecutivos, dueños de compañías grandes, con poder de decisión. Esas personas usan el deporte como pasatiempo, pero en su mundo de negocio toman decisiones, hacen inversiones. Durante esos eventos las comunidades pueden acercarse a ellos y mostrarles el potencial de la ciudad para capturar su interés e involucrarles, y así beneficiar la comunidad anfitriona”.

“Los ejecutivos de la industria deportiva no tenemos el conocimiento de las posibilidades de inversión y las oportunidades que las comunidades pueden ofrecer. Hace falta que quienes estén en esa área de economía, de búsqueda de inversiones, se acerquen a estos visitantes para mostrarles las ventajas de involucrarse y acercarse a la comunidad y ayudarlas a crecer. Muy pocos de ellos tienen interés únicamente filantrópico sino también quieren invertir. Los negocios de la comunidad que se involucren en esos eventos, tienen el acceso directo a estas personas participantes”.

Considera el Sr. Rodríguez que un aspecto que aun no se ha explotado en Doral es el potencial de desarrollo económico al involucrarse mas en los eventos deportivos que se realizan en la ciudad. Sugiere la realización de actividades en paralelo con la competencia que pudieran ser de intercambio de negocios, “un encuentro donde los empresarios de la ciudad conozcan a estos extranjeros que vinieron a competir y que pudieran interesarse en invertir. Estos atletas no son solamente dos personas en un tatami sudando y tirándose al piso. Son hombres y mujeres de negocios, que toman decisiones. Es cuestión de aprovechar la oportunidad de tenerlos allí reunidos y presentarles los beneficios y potencial de la comunidad. Es una oportunidad que no tiene precio. Solo hace falta el deseo y  la visión de los empresarios, cámaras de comercio y otros líderes comunitarios para que aprovechen esa oportunidad” manifiesta el Sr. Rodríguez, enfatizando que el apoyo de la Ciudad para la realización de estos eventos ha sido extraordinario y que si el resto de la comunidad aprovecha la ventaja de capturar el interés de estos visitantes, el beneficio económico positivo podrá verse y mantenerse a largo plazo.

“Así sea un 5% de esas personas que se interese en comprar una casa, que hagan un negocio grande, o establezcan alianzas con alguna empresa local, ya es beneficioso. Hay que crear la conciencia en los empresarios de la comunidad para que asistan al evento y se acerquen a estas personas en un ambiente distendido. Es una oportunidad única, una visión, un enfoque diferente de desarrollo de negocios. Es capturar la atención de la gente más allá del deporte y hacer su impacto positivo más perdurable. Estas personas no van a venir nuevamente en mucho tiempo. Aprovechemos la oportunidad” concluye el Sr. Rodríguez.
