MDC West Campus Presents Heatwave Sculptures: The Art of Heat-Molded Motion Exhibition

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) West Campus, in collaboration with Contemporary Art Projects USA, presents Heatwave Sculptures: The Art of Heat-Molded Motion by Miami-based artist Carola Orieta-Sperman from Oct. 16 – Dec. 13. The exhibition will open with a reception at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16. The event is free and open to the public.

Born in Argentina, Orieta-Sperman studied architecture at Belgrano University in Buenos Aires and graduated from Buenos Aires University (BAU) with degrees in interior and fashion design. She worked more than eight years as fashion designer with Argentinian Haute Couture Fashion Designer Beatriz Toscano, from whom she inherited the process of molderia and the entretela, methods that now serve as the base of her art.

Her sculptures are made from laser cut acrylic molded out in heat using thermic gloves. Using acrylic as a medium, and subjecting it to a thermos modeling process, she transforms inert material into an object that reflects life and movement, connecting to the shapes of organic forms that expand into an imaginary realm. They resemble living organisms that perform in flowing unpredictable undulations, guided by a dynamic and free-generated energy.

“This exhibition emphasizes the transformative process of using heat and thermal gloves to create the sculptures, while also suggesting the dynamic and modern nature of the works. It highlights the contrast between the rigid characteristics of the material and the fluid movement achieved through the molding technique,” Orieta-Sperman said.

Her work has been exhibited at Context-Art Miami, Palm Beach Contemporary Art Fair, Bal Harbour Bespoke, Hamptons Art Fair, Art Wynwood, Bergdorf and Goodman, among others.
