Trump nominates Marco Rubio for Secretary of State
DORAL, FL – President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday announced his nomination of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) to be Secretary of State.
“It is my Great Honor to announce that Senator Marco Rubio, of Florida, is hereby nominated to be The United States Secretary of State. Marco is a Highly Respected Leader, and a very powerful Voice for Freedom,” Trump said in a statement. “He will be a strong Advocate for our Nation, a true friend to our Allies, and a fearless Warrior who will never back down to our adversaries.”
Following his nomination, Sen. Marco Rubio said on his X account that he is “honored by the trust President Trump has placed” in him.
“Leading the U.S. Department of State is a tremendous responsibility… As Secretary of State, I will work every day to carry out his foreign policy agenda. Under the leadership of President Trump we will deliver peace through strength and always put the interests of Americans and America above all else,” Marco Rubio said.
He also mentioned he hopes to earn the support of his colleagues in the U.S. Senate, “so the President has his national security and foreign policy team in place when he takes office on January 20.”
The Miami native and son of Cuban immigrants is a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the top Republican on the selective Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
He ran against Trump for president in 2016, but abandoned the race after the President-elect routed him in his home state. Trump took Florida with 45.7% of the vote, while Rubio was second with 27%. Back in 2016, Marco Rubio became a key ally of the White House on Latin America policy.
According to analysts, Trump’s pick for Secretary of State is expected to face little resistance from his fellow Republicans in his confirmation process. Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner (D-Va.), Rubio’s Democratic counterpart on the selective Senate panel, said in a statement Wednesday that “while we don’t always agree, he is smart, talented, and will be a strong voice for American interests around the globe.”
