Nurturing the Bison Herd… Interview with Juan Carlos Silva, Principal of Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School.
“Doral is a very tight-knit community. It is a special place. The help we get from the community, from City Hall, from the parents and the district working with us is wonderful.”
Mr. Juan Carlos Silva assumed the position of Principal for Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School last year and since day one has focused on fostering the school spirit. One very nice memory that made the 2013-2014 yearbook was when he surprisingly appeared wearing the costume of ‘Tyson the Bison’, the school mascot, at the homecoming pep rally. The students loved it, and Mr. Silva won their hearts.
“Reagan has a rich tradition of being an excellent academic school and we have continued that tradition. We had a record year with the amount of scholarships our students received” explains Silva. “We have put more attention into our extracurricular activities so the kids feel more excited of being a Bison. We improved our gym and redid the surface and invested on the weight room program. We have done a lot so our athletics are better represented. There are great athletes in the Doral community and we want to give them the kind of place they deserve to train. And we have great coaches.”
The results are starting to show; the football team started with four wins this season and these victories are helping to increase the Bison Spirit within the school community.
A system to prepare well-rounded individuals
The diverse origins of the Doral population have made difficult for many parents to understand that for American culture Public High Schools are the center of their communities. And that within the passing of those four years there are many traditions and events that students live that help them acclimate.
Homecoming week, pep rallies, ring ceremony, prom; even the name of the grade levels (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior), are different from the way high school is handled in other countries. Also, the diversity of programs, subjects and electives, where every child have his own path towards obtaining their credits for graduation; It is a whole new world, especially for those newly arrived. Silva and his team make great efforts to help parents and students ease this process and to cultivate within the Doral community the pride and love for the only public high school.
Reagan/Doral High School was founded in 2006, after long struggles from community activists who achieved from the District that future Doral residents received the Public Education service for its increasing young population within city boundaries. The first graduating class from Reagan was the class of 2009. Many of those Bison just graduated college last May. Silva looks forward for them to come back and share their accomplishments with the Doral community to showcase how well prepared the Miami-Dade Public School System made them for succeeding in their college education.
Silva affirms that “Reagan is still a new school. It takes a while to get the alumni to come back and get the traditions going, to create a feeling of belonging.” To achieve that, the school administration looks forward to counting every year with more parents participating in school activities, involvement on the PTSA and partnering as sponsors.
The school offers guided visits to parents interested on registering their children on 9th grade for the upcoming school year. When parents visit the school the staff explains “how the system works; a public system rich in tradition and history that has graduated an incredible amount of successful people. In Doral the Public School System is working exemplary. The caliber of students we have here are well rounded individuals with academics, athletics, community involvement. They have every single opportunity they can imagine because we are a public school and we have so many resources; parents need to give us a chance.”
Parental involvement: the crucial part
“When a child gets to high school it doesn’t mean parents have to stop being involved. That is the crucial part. Kids may be old enough to drive, but some cannot handle how to keep their academics and all of them still need the support and nurturing that you get at home. We do everything we can to assist our students but it has to be a consolidated effort, parents need to understand that.”
The massive participation of 9th grade parents on this year orientation meeting makes Silva optimist about increasing parental involvement in the school. “I think the message is getting out there and parents understand that we need them to be involved. They are still kids and a lot of the decisions they make now can impact them greatly in the future. It is very important for the parents to be involved in those decisions.”
He is happy to report that all academic programs, athletics, clubs and electives have been preserved this year and that no budget cuts have affected the operation of the school. Moreover, there are new sports added and some additional clubs have been approved.
Last year the class of 2014 had the largest amount of students graduating with both the Cambridge and the American Diploma. “We are so high performing that it is harder to beat us sometimes, but we continue to do it. We continue to be as excellent as ever.” shares proudly.
“My expectation for every graduating class is that they are as successful as the previous class. This is not a competition. This is about the Bison family. There is no class in Reagan that will be better than other. As Coach Lopez said, we are ‘One Herd’ no matter what year you graduated, no matter what college or business field you go to. ‘Once a Bison always a Bison’ and our expectation from every class is the same: Excellence not only in academics, in the community, on how we give back,” concluded Mr. Silva.
Cuidando la manada de Bisontes

“Doral es una comunidad muy unida. Es un lugar especial. La ayuda que recibimos de la comunidad, de las autoridades, de los padres y del distrito es maravillosa. ”
El Sr. Juan Carlos Silva asumió el cargo de Director de Ronald W. Reagan / Doral Senior High School el año pasado y desde el primer día se ha enfocado en fomentar el espíritu de unión escolar.
“Reagan tiene una gran tradición de excelencia académica excelente y la hemos continuado. Tuvimos un año récord con la cantidad de becas otorgadas a nuestros graduados,” explica Silva. “Hemos puesto más atención en incrementar las actividades extracurriculares para que los muchachos se sientan más entusiasmados a participar. Mejoramos nuestro gimnasio y reparamos la superficie; invertimos en el programa de levantamiento de pesas. Hemos hecho mucho para que nuestros equipos deportivos tengan mejores resultados. Hay grandes atletas en la comunidad de Doral y queremos darles el lugar que se merecen para entrenar. Y tenemos excelentes entrenadores.”
Los resultados están empezando a materializarse; el equipo de fútbol comenzó con cuatro victorias esta temporada y estas victorias están ayudando a aumentar el Espíritu del Bisonte dentro de la comunidad escolar.
Un sistema para preparar individuos integrales
Los diversos orígenes de la población de Doral han hecho difícil para muchos padres la comprensión de la cultura americana respecto a las escuelas secundarias públicas, que se consideran el centro de sus comunidades. A lo largo de estos cuatro años hay muchas tradiciones y eventos que los estudiantes viven y que les ayudan a adaptarse.
La semana de ‘Homecoming’; los ‘Pep Rallies’; la ceremonia del Anillo; el ‘Prom’; incluso el nombre de los grados (‘Freshman’, ‘Sophomore’, ‘Junior’, ‘Senior’), todo es muy diferente a como transcurre la secundaria en otros países. Lo más importante es la diversidad de programas y asignaturas disponibles; las asignaturas electivas; todo un mundo nuevo, donde cada estudiante tiene prácticamente su propio camino para lograr los créditos para su diploma de graduación. Es un proceso duro, especialmente para quienes recién llegan a los EEUU.
Sin embargo, Silva y su equipo hacen un gran esfuerzo para ayudar a todos los padres y estudiantes para facilitar este proceso y para cultivar dentro de la comunidad de Doral el orgullo y el amor a la única escuela secundaria pública de la ciudad.
Reagan / Doral High School fue fundada en 2006 y la primera promoción fue la clase del 2009. Muchos de esos Bisontes acaban de recibir su grado universitario en Mayo 2014. Silva espera que vuelvan a compartir sus logros y experiencias con la comunidad de Doral, para mostrar lo bien preparados que salieron del Sistema de Escuelas Públicas de Miami-Dade, listos para afrontar con éxito sus estudios universitarios.
Silva afirma que “Reagan es todavía una escuela nueva. Toma tiempo lograr que los exalumnos regresen y las tradiciones se consoliden para crear una sensación de pertenencia en la comunidad.” Para lograr eso, la administración de la escuela espera poder contar cada año con más padres que participen en las actividades escolares, que se involucren también en el PTSA y colaboren como patrocinadores de clubes y actividades.
La escuela ofrece visitas guiadas a los padres interesados ??en inscribir a sus hijos en el noveno grado para el próximo año escolar. Cuando los padres visitan la escuela, reciben explicaciones sobre cómo funciona el sistema, “En Doral el Sistema de Escuelas Públicas tiene resultados excepcionales. El calibre de los estudiantes que tenemos aquí es extraordinario. Son individuos integrales, con logros académicos, atléticos y responsabilidad social. Tienen múltiples oportunidades, porque somos una escuela pública y tenemos muchos recursos; los padres tienen que darnos una oportunidad.”
Participación de los padres: crucial para el éxito
“Cuando un estudiante llega a la secundaria no significa que los padres tienen que dejar de estar involucrados. Su participación es crucial para el éxito. Los muchachos pueden tener edad suficiente para conducir, pero algunos no pueden manejar cómo mantener su carga académica y balancear todas sus actividades; ellos todavía necesitan el apoyo que puedan recibir en su casa. Nosotros haremos todo lo posible para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes, pero tiene que ser un esfuerzo conjunto, que los padres tienen que asumir junto con nosotros.”
La masiva participación de los padres de noveno grado en la reunión de orientación de este año hace que Silva se sienta optimista sobre el aumento de participación de los padres en la escuela. “Creo que el mensaje está llegando y los padres empiezan a entender que necesitamos que se involucren. Ellos siguen siendo muchachos y las decisiones que tomen ahora repercuten grandemente en su futuro. Es muy importante que los padres participen en esas decisiones.”
Silva informa satisfecho que todos los programas académicos, deportivos, clubes y electivas se han mantenido de este año y que ningún recorte presupuestario han afectado el funcionamiento de la escuela. Más aun, hay nuevos deportes y clubes adicionales que han sido aprobados y que pronto iniciaran su operación.
El año pasado la clase de 2014 tuvo la mayor cantidad de estudiantes graduados con el Diploma Cambridge y el Diploma Americano conjuntamente. “Tenemos un rendimiento tan alto que es difícil superar los logros cada año, pero seguimos haciéndolo. Seguimos siendo tan excelentes como siempre.”
“Mi expectativa es que cada clase que se gradúe sea tan exitosa como la anterior. Esto no es una competencia. Esta es la Familia del Bisonte. Todos son excelentes. Como dijo Coach López, somos ‘Una Sola Manada’. No importa en qué año te graduaste, a qué universidad asististe o qué negocio iniciaste; ‘Siempre serás un Bisonte’ y nuestra expectativa con cada clase es que mantengan la excelencia, no solamente en lo académico sino en su impacto positivo en la comunidad” concluyó Silva.
