Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School Celebrates Ten Years of Excellence

The hopes and desires of a growing community were fulfilled ten years ago with the inauguration of Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School (RRDSH). Since then, the school has graduated seven senior classes, who have brought the name of their school and their city to the best universities in the country.
The vision and persistence for many years, of those parents and community activists that approached the School Board to request the construction of a High School exclusive for Doral residents, paid off on September 1, 2004, with the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a 252,367 sf state-of-the-art building located at the northern part of the recently incorporated city, to house a school for 2000 students that was expected to be finished by the Fall of 2006.
Immediately preparations began, including the selection of the name for the school, programs to be offered and faculty. Mr. Douglas Rodriguez was selected principal and by the time school year 2006-2007 started the building was almost ready. For a few months the freshmen and sophomores of RRDSH received classes at the now extinct Doral Middle School until the brand new building was ready for moving in, and the rest is a successful history.
Ten years later RRDSH, from the past three years under the leadership of Principal Mr. Juan Carlos Silva, is a vibrant community of students, teachers and parents constantly striving for excellence and success.
On Saturday February 27th the school opened its doors to celebrate the milestone with an art fair, “Colors of Doral”, with the participation of the artists who decorated the walls of the school with beautiful murals, and a showcase of the activities and clubs that enrich the educational experience of the students at RRDSH. It was also a great opportunity to comment with those who have been part of the institution for all these years about their experiences, hopes and dreams for the future.
Memories from the first years
“Those are of the fondest memories of my education career. I remember many of the first group of students that walked through those doors and remember being so excited and proud of opening the first High School for the City of Doral. I am very proud of RRDSH; it has become one of the best schools in the County. Its academic achievements are excellent. There is no doubt it has become a great school. I would love to see for the next 10 years of Reagan to continue the academic success; and for Doral Academy and RRDSH to become closer participating in activities together in the community. “I was here before the school was built. I was hired to create the Classical Arts Academy; it was an outstanding process being able to create something from scratch. I and Ms. Alicia Romero were here first; Mr. Bermudez came on board a couple of years later. This is a great community. The kids are fantastic! They practically run everything here. We have been lucky, the parental support is strong, the Bison Band booster who helps us raise money is a very strong organization and it has been a pleasure working with them. It makes it difficult to think about retirement, I love it here! I would like the program to keep growing, to see the jazz band continue their national prominence, continue to grow. I would like to see more media exposure of our program; we do a great job here. Many in the community do not know we have won championships in VA, GA, NY and DC. Our school is as good and competitive as magnet schools, although we do not get that much attention on our results. We do as much as we can for the City, we would like the City to do more for our public schools, in terms of financial support to continue representing it everywhere we go. We raise our own funds; it would be greater to have additional help. On April 1st we will be participating at the National Jazz Festival in Washington DC, representing the school and Doral, we are proud to represent it nationally. “It has been great working here since inauguration, seeing it rise and the awesome things that happen here, the great kids that achieve great things. This school excels every year, it is an honor working here. It looks beautiful now with all the artwork. Students are not what it used to be, but are still great. Back in 2009 students were more book wise. The newer generations are more technology driven; that is good and bad at the same time, but you have to evolve with technology and it changes a lot. Education for a culturally diverse community
“It’s been a great experience. It has honestly been a pleasure and a privilege being here for as long as I have and I wish to be here for another 30 years. You see a lot of difference in the students today, but I think it is more social than anything else. The kids are more technologically savvy, the school has also evolved, and we have incorporated art and the community more. As the community has expanded it has been a lot better and we are having more support from different members and it is great. I would like us to be ranked better in the US in education and sports; we have great students and great teachers and administration. If parents make sure to push their kids to reach their full potential and give us the support that we need, it would let us be able to educate their kids and give them the chance to the best future” Maria Pardo, Science Teacher (10 Years)
“It has been a great experience, a real pleasure seeing a lot of students grow, especially in the different arts programs. I get to see my students when they graduate and go into different fields and it is always nice to see them when they come back and visit. “It has been exciting how the school has grown, how it has embraced the arts. We have many things going on and every year it keeps getting better. With the community growth, I love the fact that it supports the school and we have events where the students can appreciate the art in their own city. For me as an artist, I get to meet students from all over the world here: from India, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Italy, England; we get very interesting conversations and everyone brings their own ‘colors’. Many of our students move on to study architecture or to schools of visual arts all over the world, we have had students that have continued with the arts in their higher education and have come back to tell us that it was because of the program here that they have been able to create beautiful work in college. “I have seen a lot of growth with the variety of academic programs we offer. I have seen the school grow with children, and the extracurricular and athletic programs grown since we started. What I have noticed the most in the community is that they are getting a taste of what a traditional American High School experience should be. Some from foreign countries aren’t sure on how it should be, but with us having here for ten years and establishing traditions they are learning about the experience. I love the school administration, staff and my peers. “When you’ve been here for this long you become familiar with everybody here in the community and how it operates. Having that feeling of being part of a community for so long helps one want to strive to help the community out of itself. A lot more people have come in, the school is constantly growing, we are overflowing with kids, but the things I have seen in ten years are wonderful. Having so many successful alumni makes me proud, seeing them after coming out of our program you feel like it is your kid that has gone and succeeded. You never know how much you can affect them. It is nice to see years later that what you are doing is having a positive effect on quite a few people. I hope we continue to be academically and artistically a top notch school. Better than a Gold Medal
“Seeing again a former student is better than winning an Olympic Gold Medal. To me is a fortune to be part of this school, I was part of the first faculty and the experience is excellent. The most important thing here is the parents; that is the key of success. We have students in every single one of the best universities of the US. I am really proud of being a Bison and I hope to be here until I retire. The best of this school is the quality of the students we have. Their human quality, I would like to strengthen the link between the school and the parents; to continue the path to success we need to encourage parents to participate in activities as well. Leadership towards the future

“It feels incredible to be the principal that is here on this 10 year anniversary. It is great to see alumni coming back, and students here today showing what we have been able to accomplish. This is my third year here, everyone that came before did a great job at setting it up. We have tried to get it to the next level, opening it a bit more to the community, to make it shine for everybody to see, we have done it by embracing our relationships with businesses, authorities and other neighboring schools, getting everybody involved. My wishes are first of all that the City realizes what a special place they have here, that we continue to work together for the benefit of the residents of Doral and the students of Dade County Public Schools. I want to continue making sure that we are the best as a school, as an organization. We need the support of the families, the authorities and businesses. It is a matter of working together. Secundaria Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior Celebra Diez Años de Excelencia

Los deseos de una creciente comunidad se cumplieron hace diez años con la inauguración de la Escuela Secundaria Ronald W. Reagan/Doral (RRDSH). Desde entonces se han graduado siete cohortes, llevando en alto el nombre de su escuela y su ciudad a las mejores universidades del país.
La visión y persistencia de muchos padres y activistas, quienes constantemente solicitaron a la Junta Escolar una secundaria exclusiva para los residentes de Doral, se vieron compensadas el 1 de Septiembre de 2004 con el inicio de la construcción del edificio de 252,367 Sf, ubicado al norte de la municipalidad. Esa sería la sede de una escuela para 2000 estudiantes, a ser completada para el otoño de 2006.
Los preparativos comenzaron de inmediato, desde la selección del nombre para la nueva escuela, los programas educativos y el personal académico. El Sr. Douglas Rodríguez fue nombrado director y para el inicio del año escolar 2006-2007 el edificio estaba casi listo. Por unos pocos meses los estudiantes de primero y segundo año recibieron clases en aulas de Doral Middle School, hasta que la construcción fue finalizada y pudieron mudarse a la nueva escuela. Desde entonces ha sido una historia de éxitos constantes.
Diez años después y bajo el liderazgo del Director Juan Carlos Silva, RRDSH es una comunidad vibrante de estudiantes, maestros y profesores, constantemente en la búsqueda de la excelencia y el éxito.
El sábado 27 de febrero la escuela abrió sus puertas para celebrar con la comunidad tan señalado aniversario. Se realizó la feria “Colores de Doral”, con la participación de los artistas que donaron su talento para decorar los muros de la escuela. Además hubo muestras de las actividades y clubes estudiantiles y presentaciones por parte de proveedores locales. Fue además el momento propicio para comentar con los protagonistas de la historia sobre sus experiencias en estos 10 años y sus deseos para el futuro de RRDSH.
Recuerdos del inicio
“Son de los recuerdos más queridos de mi carrera en educación. Recuerdo muchos de los primeros estudiantes. Recuerdo el entusiasmo y orgullo de abrir la primera Escuela Secundaria Publica para la Ciudad de Doral. RRDSH me enorgullece mucho, es una de las mejores escuelas del Condado, con logros académicos excelentes. Espero que los próximos diez años sean igual de exitosos. ES mi deseo que Doral Academy y RRDSH se acerquen más y participen en conjunto en actividades comunitarias. Sería algo maravilloso de lograr para nuestras escuelas.” Douglas Rodríguez, Primer Director de RRDSH y actual Director de Doral Academy.
“Cuando construían la escuela ya yo estaba aquí. Me emplearon para crear la Academia de Artes Clásicas; fue un proceso maravilloso crear algo desde cero. La Sra. Alicia Romero y yo iniciamos esto. La comunidad es excelente y los estudiantes fantásticos. Prácticamente caminan solos. Tenemos mucha suerte de contar con tanto apoyo de los padres. El Club de padres de la Banda es una organización muy fuerte, que recauda los fondos para nuestras actividades. Es un placer trabajar con todos ellos, tanto que me hace difícil pensar en retirarme, ¡me encanta estar aquí! Deseo que el programa siga creciendo, que la banda de jazz continúe creciendo y destacándose a nivel nacional. Espero que podamos tener más cobertura en los medios, pues hacemos un gran trabajo. Mucha gente en la comunidad no sabe que hemos ganado competencias en VA, GA, NY y DC. Nuestra escuela es tan buena y competitiva como los programas magnet, aunque nuestros resultados no sean tan conocidos. Representamos con orgullo a Doral; quisiéramos que las autoridades nos apoyaran aún más, en términos de fondos adicionales para continuar representando a la ciudad a nivel nacional. El 1 de Abril participaremos en el Festival Nacional de Jazz en Washington DC y el 28 de Marzo en la competencia estatal en Cape Coral. “Ha sido maravilloso trabajar aquí desde la inauguración, ver la escuela crecer, las cosas tan interesantes que hacen los muchachos y ver todos sus logros. La escuela es mejor cada año, es un honor trabajar en RRDSH. Y ahora se ve preciosa con los nuevos murales. Los estudiantes ya no son como antes, aunque siguen siendo muy buenos. En 2009 usaban más los libros. Las nuevas generaciones usan más tecnología; eso está bien, porque hay que irse adaptando a los cambios. Educando una comunidad diversa
“Ha sido una experiencia fabulosa, un placer y un privilegio. Ojala pueda estar aquí 30 años más. Se ven muchas diferencias en los estudiantes de ahora, pero son mayormente sociales. Los jóvenes usan más la tecnología y la escuela también ha evolucionado. Ahora también se ha incorporado el arte y la comunidad a la escuela. Esto está muy bien, porque tenemos más apoyo de la comunidad. Deseo que estemos cada vez mejor ubicados entre las mejores escuelas de EEUU tanto en resultados académicos como en deportes. Tenemos brillantes estudiantes, maravillosos maestros y gran liderazgo. “Ha sido un placer ver crecer a los estudiantes, en especial los de los programas de arte. Muchos de mis alumnos al graduarse se dedican a diferentes campos, pero siempre nos encanta cuando nos visitan. “Es maravilloso ver crecer la escuela y como ha incorporado el arte. Tenemos muchas actividades y cada año es mejor que el anterior. A pesar del crecimiento de la comunidad, aprecio su apoyo a los eventos de la escuela donde los estudiantes pueden entrar en contacto con el arte en su propia ciudad. Como artista he podido conocer estudiantes de todas partes del mundo aquí en RRDSH: India, Brasil, Argentina, Venezuela, Italia e Inglaterra; tenemos conversaciones muy interesantes y cada uno aporta algo importante. Muchos de nuestros estudiantes estudian arquitectura o artes visuales alrededor del mundo. Tenemos estudiantes que regresan y nos cuentan que gracias nuestro programa han sabido hacer trabajos hermosos en la universidad. “He visto el crecimiento de la escuela y los programas que ofrecemos, al igual que la cantidad de estudiantes, las actividades extracurriculares y programas deportivos. He notado que para la comunidad ha sido importante la escuela para comprender el sistema tradicional de las secundarias en EEUU. Al tener nosotros tradiciones establecidas, los padres aprenden de la experiencia. Aprecio mucho a la administración, empleados y compañeros profesores. “Cuando estas aquí tanto tiempo te familiarizas con toda la comunidad y como opera. Tener esa sensación de pertenecer a una comunidad por tanto tiempo te impulsa a desear ayudar a la comunidad a avanzar. Ha llegado mucha gente nueva, la escuela ha seguido creciendo, tenemos demasiados estudiantes, pero lo que he visto salir de nuestro programa en estos diez años me hace sentir muy orgulloso; te sientes como que es el éxito de tu propio hijo. Nunca sabes cuánto puedes impactar a una persona. Mejor que una medalla de oro olímpica
“Ver de nuevo a un estudiante antiguo es mejor que ganar la medalla de oro Olímpica. Para mi es una fortuna ser parte de esta escuela desde el principio. La experiencia ha sido excelente. Lo más importante son los padres, su participación es la clave del éxito. Tenemos estudiantes en cada una de las mejores universidades en EEUU. Estoy muy orgulloso de ser un Bison, y lo seré hasta que me retire. Tenemos excelentes estudiantes con gran calidad humana. Deseo que se fortalezcan los enlaces entre la escuela y los padres. Para seguir en el camino del éxito tenemos que seguir estimulando a los padres a participar en las actividades junto con sus hijos. Liderazgo para el futuro
“Aquí tenemos estudiantes relacionados con su comunidad y su escuela; tenemos un líder, el director, involucrado con la comunidad y tenemos una comunidad que participa. Es un día fenomenal para celebrar los 10 años, estoy honrado de representar al PTSA del Condado el día de hoy. Estas son las personas que han trabajado duro para que esto suceda, es maravilloso y solo puedo desearles muchos años más de excelencia. “Es increíble ser el director para el momento de celebrar los 10 años de la escuela. Nos encanta ver graduados que regresan de visita y a los estudiantes demostrando las habilidades que han adquirido. Este es mi tercer año en RRDSH. Quienes vinieron antes que yo hicieron un gran trabajo. Nosotros hemos trabajado para seguir al siguiente nivel, abriendo las relaciones con la comunidad; fortaleciendo lazos con los negocios, autoridades y otras escuelas del área; fomentando la participación de todos. Quisiera que todos en Doral aprecien el lugar tan especial que tienen en RRDSH, que continuemos trabajando para beneficiar a los residentes de la Ciudad y a los estudiantes. Quiero asegurarme que tenemos siempre el apoyo de las familias, autoridades y negocios cercanos, es asunto de trabajar juntos. Espero que los estudiantes aprecien lo que tienen: su familia.
