FCAT 2.0 and How We Can Help our Kids.

The results of the recent 2011-2012 The Parent Academy survey held in JIS K-8 center indicated that the main concern that parents have concerning the institution is how they can help their kids obtain positive results in the state exams. In response to that, Mrs. Jenny Miranda Gonzales offered an interesting conference that we present to you.
The FCAT 2.0 measures student achievement of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. The transition from the FCAT to the FCAT 2.0 will be phased in, with 2011 FCAT 2.0 Reading and Mathematics being the first assessments to begin this transition. FCAT 2.0 Science will be administered to students for the first time in the spring of 2012, and the writing assessment will continue to be administered through 2014.
The skills and competencies outlined in the Standards were embedded in the material of the student’s core classes. Students now receive instruction on the content of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards, and like the FCAT, the FCAT 2.0 measures achievement of these educational standards. The best understanding of a student’s academic achievement comes from looking at multiple pieces of evidence collected over time.
How are the FCAT and FCAT 2.0 different?
The FCAT measures student achievement of the Sunshine State Standards, while the FCAT 2.0 measures student achievement of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards, which are more rigorous grade-level expectations.
The major differences between the FCAT 2.0 and FCAT are listed below:
• Some test items in Session 2 of the Grades 3 and 4 FCAT 2.0 Mathematics assessments require the use of the provided ruler to answer questions. These test items may include measurements in either metric or customary units.
• The 4th Grade FCAT 2.0 Mathematics assessment includes not only multiple-choice test items, but also gridded-response test items.
• The gridded-response test items in FCAT 2.0 Mathematics for grades 5th through 8th have different grids than those on the FCAT. Additionally, the option for negative answers for gridded-response items is now included for grades 7th and 8th .
• For the 5th Grade FCAT 2.0 Mathematics assessment, students are provided a reference sheet that contains information and formulas they may need to complete some test items.
• The FCAT 2.0 Reading assessments in grades 3rd through 10th include a greater number of reading passages from the public domain, such as historical documents and works by classical authors.
• The FCAT 2.0 Reading assessments in grades 3rd through 10th include a greater number of test items that require reasonable inferences and reasonable prior knowledge.
• Reference sheets are not provided for the Grades 5th and 8th FCAT 2.0 Science assessments, but 8th Grade students will receive a Periodic Table of the Elements.
• FCAT Mathematics was administered at grades 9th and 10th , but there are no FCAT 2.0 Mathematics assessments for grades 9th and 10th . The Algebra 1 and Geometry End-of-Course (EOC) Assessments have replaced these tests as the high-school-level mathematics assessments.
• FCAT Science was administered at 11th grace, but there is no 11th Grade FCAT 2.0 Science assessment. The Biology 1 EOC Assessment has replaced the 11th grade test as the high-school-level science assessment.
FCAT 2.0 tests do not have any performance task items.
How to help out kids

2.Foster healthy study habits
- -Sleep early and plenty
- -Eat right
- -Have an adequate place to study
- -Have discipline and dedicate time for schoolwork
3. Know your child’s type of intelligence
Dr. Howard Gardner and his work were discussed during the presentation, specifically in regards to the different types of intellect among children; visual/spatial, musical, kinetic, intrapersonal, interpersonal, linguistic, and mathematical logic. Being able to see which one of the seven best describe your child allows you to create a tailored environment for optimal studying. You will be able to know if music or other distractions should be allowed or whether more space is needed, etc. This was the challenge left for us as parents, to study our kinds and finally decided how we can best help them to study at 100% of their potential.

FACT 2.0 y como ayudar a nuestros hijos.

Los resultados de la reciente encuesta 2011-2012 de The Parent Academy en JIS k-8 Center indicaron que ,la mayor preocupación de los padres de familia de esa institución , era como apoyar a sus hijos para que tuvieran resultados positivos en los exámenes del estado. Para ese fin, la Sra. Jenny Miranda Gonzales ofreció una interesante conferencia la cual presentamos a continuación.
Para muchos es ya conocido el examen FCAT , implementado en 1998 y cuyas iniciales significan : Florida Comprensive Assesment Test. Es el examen que mide el desempeño de los estudiantes en matemáticas, lectura , escritura y ciencias . Este examen ha sido perfeccionado para poder lograr una mayor eficiencia , tomando el nombre de FCAT 2.0 y actuando bajo nuevos estándares : Sunshine State Next Generation. . La transición de la FCAT a la versión FCAT 2.0 se introducirá gradualmente este año para lectura y matemáticas. El FCAT 2,0 para ciencias se aplicara recién en 2012. En cuanto a escritura , los cambios se darán a partir del 2014.. Nuevos conceptos fueron incorporados en el material de las clases básicas del estudiante. Los logros de los estudiantes se medirán en base a múltiples aspectos colectados durante el tiempo.
Diferencias entre FCAT y FCAT 2.0
1- Algunos ítems de la Sección 2 de matemáticas para los grados 3ro y 4to requieren el uso de la regla provista a fin de poder responder las preguntas .Se trabajara con unidades métricas o tradicionales .
2- 4to grado ; la evaluación de matemáticas no sólo incluye preguntas de opción múltiple sino también respuestas en la cuadricula provista .
3- Para 5to, 6to, 7mo y 8vo grados , se utilizara nuevas cuadriculas FCAT 2.0 para los exámenes de matemáticas Además, la opción de respuestas negativas en cuadrícula se incluye ahora en los grados 7 y 8.
4- 5to grado Matemáticas: los estudiantes recibirán una hoja de referencia que contiene información y las fórmulas que puedan necesitar para completar algunos elementos de prueba.
5- Lectura: Todos los grados ( 3ro a 10mo ) incluyen un mayor número de pasajes de lectura del dominio público, tales como documentos históricos y obras de autores clásicos.
6- Lectura; Todos lo grados (3ro a 10 )incluyen un mayor número de elementos de prueba que requieren conclusiones y conocimiento previo razonables.
7- Ya no se proporcionaran hojas de referencia para los grados 5to y 8vo en las evaluaciones de Ciencias , solo en el grado 8vo, los estudiantes recibirán una Tabla Periódica de los Elementos.
8- No hay evaluaciones matemáticas FCAT 2.0 para los grados 9no y 10mo. Las pruebas de Álgebra 1 y Geometría (EOC) han reemplazado a estas evaluaciones.
9- El examen FCAT de Ciencias para 11vo grado ha sido sustituido la evaluación de Biología (EOC)
10- Las pruebas FCAT 2.0 no tienen referencia a los aspectos de desempeño

2- Crear hábitos de estudio sano :
- Dormir bien y temprano.
- Comer bien .
- Tener un lugar adecuado para estudiar.
- Tener disciplina y horarios para los deberes escolares
3-Conocer el tipo de inteligencia que tiene nuestro hijo.
En la presentación se hablo del trabajo del Dr. Howard Gardner acerca de los distintos tipos de inteligencia que tenían los niños: Visual/Espacial, Musical, Kinestésica, Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Lingüística y Lógica Matemática. Al poder discernir cual de los 7 tipos se asemeja mas a nuestro hijo podemos crear un ambiente optimo para el estudio. Así podremos saber si es posible admitir música o elementos de distracción , o fomentar ambientes amplios o mas exclusivos, etc. . Esa fue la tarea final que nos encomendaron , estudiar a nuestros propios hijos y como padres decidir como finalmente ellos podrán estudiar 100% satisfactoriamente
