A Community Rallies
by Lucy Gonzalez
Some think the world is a negative space. A place where soon there will be no hope for society. But, what if that wasn’t the case and all hope isn’t lost?
In the last few weeks, hope has been restored in meaningful ways by the communities that have come together to support and aid the victims and rescuers of the Champlain Towers accident in Surfside, Florida.
On Thursday, June 24, the 12-story condominium suddenly collapsed in the middle of the night, tragically leaving many people dead and scores of families affected. With the tragedy at hand, we have seen a flood of support and assistance from all parts of the world. In the weeks following the calamity, humanity and kindness have shone through the Champlain Towers tragedy. On the site, hundreds of front-line workers are tirelessly working to rescue and recover the victims. Members of the community are collecting goods and preparing food for those involved. Donations were immediately set up to help fund the effort and to assist the survivors.
Although this tragedy disrupted the lives of so many in the Surfside community, communities near and far are doing what they can to help the lives of strangers. Though it may be hard to see the positive in situations like these, Surfside reassures us all that cooperation and a common humanity can be found in the aftermath of a disaster.
