Ana Sofía Olano received Silver Knight Award in Science.

Ana Sofia Olano has been a scientist for as long as she can remember and this coming fall will be attending Harvard University to pursue a degree in Physics.
Her passion for knowledge and dedication to her studies have earned her many awards throughout her life; the most recent of them the prestigious Miami Herald Silver Knight Award 2015 in the category of Science, for her academic excellence and her community service through the “Mad Scientist Program”, dedicated to sparking the interest in STEM disciplines among young people through performances and presentations of science experiments in a fun and entertaining way.
A resident of Doral since a very young age, Ana attended Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center and is graduating with honors with the Class of 2015 at Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School. She is the second Silver Knight in the history of the school and the first Bison to go to Harvard, something that has made not only her and her family proud, but also the entire community.
“I was so grateful and honored to receive the Silver Knight. Being bestowed these awards is more than anything incredibly humbling. Honestly, we have a class full of incredible people, and I want to be able to represent every one, who are as spirited and have so much potential.”
Ana’s sweet and optimistic character has gained her the love and appreciation of all those who know her. She received the coveted Spirit of the Bison, the main award from the school given to the student who has left an indelible mark on her teachers and peers.
“I was incredibly honored to receive it. Everyone spirit in school contributes to what it means to be a Bison. It is the sense of unity, standing together rather than alone, wanting to help the community you are in, wanting to run forward. If you think of the Bison in a metaphorical sense, it is a noble entity that stands with its peers and is always willing to move forward. And I am so proud, so happy to being named ‘Spirit of the Bison’. It kind of tells me that I have been recognized for that sense of wanting to always move forward and push on no matter obstacles might be in your way and always keep the optimism and shared with everyone. Passion is all it is.”
Focus, passion and responsibility
When young girls dressed up as princesses, Ana looked forward to dress up as an astronaut. That childhood dream of hers is not far from reach. This summer she will be shadowing an engineer in NASA, right before heading to college.
A multitalented girl, Ana loves to read and write. She also plays the guitar and ukulele, and has a beautiful alto voice. When she was not at the physics lab working on her Muon Flux research, she was either playing badminton, or organizing the activities for the Engineering Club or at the Fine Arts wing, rehearsing with the Reagan Singers or putting together the next Coffee House performance. She was always busy, without losing perspective on the most important objective: getting great grades to get into her dream college.
“As long as you are willing to dedicate yourself to be excellent in different fields you are going to be able to manage. A big thing has been having strict priorities. Academics come first and after that you have the responsibility for the things you set yourself on positions of leadership. Responsibility is what keeps you going.”
Focus and dedication have been her main tools for time management, but also passion for knowledge and keeping a good attitude towards the goal she has in mind.
A childlike sense of wonder
Ana does not remember when she started to love science but remembers the emotion “the sense of discovery, of possibility” and her will to pursue knowledge. She still feels it when she is working on her research on Theoretical Physics, the field she wants to study in college.
“When I found quantum mechanics I knew that I found my passion. I have a very optimistic, almost kind of magical view of life and science is the one thing that most permits me to express that side of myself. There is an entire realm waiting to be explored. When you have to come up with radical solutions, you need a creative spark. It is incredible to have that feeling that allows you to just imagine. That is the wonder of it. That is beautiful to me.”
“A Childlike spirit of wonder, curiosity, imaginativeness is what is going to lead you to discovery. And of course if you are going to go through science, also a strong dedication to pursue all the knowledge you are going to need. The quest for knowledge is never-ending. Science is a long career but I am so ready to embark on it.”
Never stop searching, never be complacent
Ana is always happy and smiling. Both her parents are her inspiration but she credits her dad for encouraging her to always smile “He would say, ‘for school pictures smile so big your eyes start to close’, and I always wanted to show that brilliance on my face. That pushed me to better myself, to keep an attitude of positivity, that I can do better; the sense of looking forward, wanting to improve. You just have to believe that you can and let the optimism carry you. I think that is the way it works in my life and I have adopted it so fervently.”
“To those who are going to follow in our footsteps I would say: Never stop searching, never be complacent. Always look for what else you can bring to the table, what else is waiting for you because every single moment is an opportunity and every door you open can lead to these incredible places. Life is a continued search for what is the next step. You should always have a general path of where you are headed and be excellent on doing it, but allow yourself to live and see what opportunities life opens for you. And ultimately follow your true passion. I have been blessed to do that and that is incredible!”

A Ana Sofía Olano le han gustado las ciencias desde que tiene memoria y el próximo otoño comenzará e estudiar Física en la Universidad de Harvard.
Su pasión por el conocimiento y la dedicación a sus estudios le han merecido incontables reconocimientos toda su vida escolar, pero el más reciente es el prestigioso Premio Silver Knight otorgado por el Miami Herald, en la categoría de Ciencias, por su excelencia académica y su trabajo comunitario.
Ana creó el programa “Científicos Locos”, que se dedica a hacer presentaciones de experimentos científicos a jóvenes y niños, en escuelas y campamentos de verano, con el objetivo de interesarlos en las ciencias desde una temprana edad de una manera divertida y entretenida.
Ha vivido en Doral desde muy pequeña. Estudió en Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center y forma parte de la Clase del 2015 de Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School, donde se está graduando con honores.
“Estoy humildemente honrada y agradecida de haber recibido el Silver Knight. Honestamente, todos los miembros de la Clase del 2015 de Reagan son realmente brillantes y quiero representarlos a todos y cada uno de ellos, pues son todos estudiantes con un gran potencial.”
El carácter dulce y optimista de Ana le ha granjeado el aprecio de todos los que la conocen. Por ello recibió también el premio “Espíritu del Bisonte”, que otorga anualmente la escuela al estudiante que cada año ha dejado una huella imborrable en sus maestros y compañeros.
“Fue un honor increíble recibirlo. El espíritu de todos en la escuela contribuye al significado del Bisonte; Es el sentido de unidad, de conjunto, de ayudar a la comunidad que te rodea, de seguir adelante. Si pensamos en el Bisonte en sentido metafórico, es una entidad que se mantiene en su manada y que siempre va hacia adelante. Estoy tan feliz de haber recibido este premio. Eso me dice que han reconocido mi deseo constante de superar cualquier obstáculo, mantener el optimismo e impulsar a mis compañeros. Con pasión todo puede lograrse.”
Enfoque, pasión, responsabilidad
Mientras otras niñas se disfrazaban de princesas, Ana se vestía de astronauta. Ese sueño de la infancia podría no estar tan lejos. Este verano, antes de mudarse a Boston, Ana va a trabajar por una semana con un ingeniero en la NASA.
Es una niña con muchos talentos diversos. Disfruta mucho leer y escribir poemas. También toca varios instrumentos musicales, en especial la guitarra y el ukelele y tiene una hermosa voz. Cuando no estaba en el laboratorio de física haciendo sus experimentos de ‘Flujo de Partículas Muon’, uno podía encontrarla jugando bádminton, organizando las actividades del Club de Ingeniería, en los salones de música ensayando con los Reagan Singers o si no organizando los actos para el siguiente Coffee House. Ana siempre estaba muy ocupada, pero sin perder la perspectiva del objetivo más importante: Tener excelentes calificaciones para entrar en la universidad de sus sueños.
“Si quieres dedicarte y ser excelente en muchos ámbitos tienes que manejar tu tiempo. Lo importante es tener prioridades estrictas. Lo académico viene primero y después todas las responsabilidades que asumiste cuando aceptaste posiciones de liderazgo. La responsabilidad es el motor de toda actividad.”
Enfoque y dedicación han sido sus mejores herramientas para manejo del tiempo y lograr sus objetivos, pero también la pasión por el conocimiento, y mantener una buena actitud hacia la meta que tenía en mente.
La capacidad de asombro de los niños
Ana no recuerda en que momento comenzó a amar las ciencias, pero si recuerda la emoción “esa sensación de descubrimiento” y su deseo de obtener conocimientos. Aun puede experimentar esas sensaciones cuando está haciendo sus investigaciones de Física Teórica, el campo donde desea enfocarse en la universidad.
“Cuando descubrí la mecánica cuántica supe que había encontrado mi pasión. Tengo una visión optimista, casi mágica, de la vida y la ciencia es lo que me permite expresar esa parte de mí. Es como si un reino entero estuviera esperando por ser explorado y descubierto. Y cuando tienes que llegar a soluciones radicales necesitas la chispa creativa. Es increíble tener esa sensación que te permite imaginar. Es la capacidad de maravillarte ante las cosas. Eso es hermoso para mí.”
“Para lograr descubrimientos necesitas la capacidad de asombro de los niños, la curiosidad y la imaginación. Y si el campo de descubrimiento es científico necesitas dedicarte a obtener todo el conocimiento que te haga falta. La búsqueda del conocimiento no acaba nunca. La Ciencia es una carrera muy larga, pero yo estoy lista para embarcarme en ese viaje.”
Nunca dejes de investigar. Nunca seas complaciente
La alegría y sonrisa de Ana son contagiosas. Para ella sus padres son su inspiración, pero sobre todo recuerda que su padre le inspiró a sonreír siempre. “Yo siempre quiero tener ese brillo en mi rostro. Esa actitud me empujó a siempre mejorar, a mantenerme positiva e ir hacia adelante, siempre progresando. Solo tienes que creer que puedes y dejarte llevar por tu optimismo. Esa es la manera como han funcionado las cosas en mi vida, una filosofía que he adoptado fervientemente.”
“A quienes vienen después de mi quiero decirles que nunca dejen de investigar y que nunca sean complacientes. Traten siempre de ver qué más pueden aportar y qué más les depara el futuro, pues cada momento es una oportunidad y cada puerta que se abre les puede llevar a lugares increíbles. Está bien tener un plan general de hacia dónde quieres ir, pero hay que permitirse aprovechar las oportunidades que la vida abre para nosotros. Sin embargo, lo más importante es seguir siempre tu verdadera pasión. Soy afortunada de haber encontrado la mía temprano en la vida y esto ha sido algo increíble para mi”
