DORAL HAS RECEIVED THE PLATINUM CERTIFICATION FROM THE WORLD COUNCIL ON CITY DATA (WCCD)

Doral is the fourth city in the United States to receive this certification, joining a worldwide network of more than 50 municipalities

Doral received the World Council on City Data (WCCD) Platinum certification ISO 37120 because it is considered an intelligent, sustainable and thriving city. The WCCD hosts a network of innovative cities committed to improving services and quality of life of its residents.
The Director for Economic Development of the City of Doral, Manuel Pila, informed us that obtaining this certification turns us into the fourth city in the United States to belong to this WCCD worldwide network, we are joining Boston, San Diego and Los Angeles. “Now, Doral joins more than 50 cities around the world that belong to this group, all under the common goal of sharing creative learning, further innovation, envision alternative futures, and build better and more livable cities.
SUSTAINABLE CITIES
Pila explained that in order to belong to this select group and to get the Platinum certification ISO 37120, Doral had to comply with 100 indicators, summarized in the following areas: economy, education, energy, environment, finance, response to emergencies, government, health, safety, recreation, solid waste, shelter, telecommunications, urban planning, residual waters, transportation and water and sanitation.
Pila provided some examples of the main items that are taken into consideration in these indicators, for example, employment and unemployment index, estimated value of properties, percentage of the population that lives in poverty, number of students that graduate from high school and number of residents with electricity.
It is important to mention also the firefighters and police officers per one hundred thousand inhabitants, number of homicides per one hundred thousand residents, voting participation in municipal elections, average expectancy of life, number of doctors per one hundred thousand residents and the percentage of the population that lives in the suburbs.
Some other aspects that are also evaluated are the percentage of the population with waste service, amount of internet connections per one hundred residents, annual number of public transportation commutes and number of people that own a car, the amount of green areas per one hundred thousand residents and the percentage of the population with running water.
“As a global leader in standardized indicators, the WCCD implemented these indicators enabling cities to assess their performance, measure their progress over time and also draw comparative lessons from other cities locally and globally, for this reason we are proud about the fact that Doral has received the highest certification, Platinum, because it means that it is in compliance with between 91 and 100 of these indicators,” added Pila.
These standardized indicators enable cities to assess their performance and compare their progress at a local and international level, they promote the creation of more effective governments and with more efficient services, allow the decision process based on evidence, provide a frame for sustainability and resilience, assist in benchmarks both locally and internationally, promote comparative learning and the exchange of solutions and help in the exploration of options to bring investment to our city.
The objective of the WCCD is to be a global leader on standardize metrics that allow to conduct comparisons and evaluations that are real. For this reason, the first international standard on city data was published in May 2014 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ISO 37120 establishes definitions and methodologies for a set of indicators to steer and measure the social, economic and environmental performance of a city in relation to other cities.
Manuel Pila states that getting this certification was a commitment from the IT Department of the City of Doral under the direction of Gladys Gonzalez. Nevertheless, the support that all the Departments of the City of Doral and the different areas from Miami Dade County such as the Fire Department, Environmental, Waste Management, Water and Sewer, etc. was essential in gathering the data for the creation of reports necessary to succeed in the process to get the certification.
“The City of Doral has made important investments as part of its commitment to the wellbeing of the community and having achieved this certification not only shows that we are a prosperous municipality, but also that we keep moving forward in improving the quality of life of our residents and merchants,” highlighted Pila.
Joining the WCCD allows the cities to improve the transparency and accountability with independently verified data that will help them make informed decisions; identify common management issues; draw comparative lessons from other cities; get access to the WCCD to get more in depth information and monitoring capabilities; participation in city summits, round tables, webinars and other events and activities that are exclusive to the WCCD; to measure the performance of other WCCD cities and receive publications and reports from the WCCD.
This ISO 37120 Platinum certification is also shared by cities such as Dubai, Amsterdam, Melbourne and Barcelona.
After receiving this certification, the data of the City of Doral can be viewed in the WCCD webpage: www.dataforcities.org, this allows for local, national and international comparisons.

DORAL RECIBE CERTIFICACION PLATINUM DE LA WCCD
Doral es la cuarta ciudad de Estados Unidos en recibir está certificación, uniéndose a una red mundial de más de 50 localidades

Por ser considerada un región inteligente, sostenible y próspera, Doral recibió la certificación Platinum ISO 37120 del Concejo Mundial de Datos de Ciudades (WCCD, por sus siglas inglés), institución que alberga una red de ciudades innovadoras, comprometidas con la mejora de sus servicios y la calidad de vida sus habitantes.
Así lo dio a conocer el Desarrollador Económico de la Ciudad de Doral, Manuel Pila, quien informó que obtener esta certificación nos convierte en la cuarta ciudad de Estados Unidos en pertenecer a esta red mundial de la WCCD, junto a Boston, San Diego y Los Angeles. “De esta forma, Doral se une a las más de 50 ciudades en todo el mundo que conforman este grupo, bajo el objetivo común de avanzar juntas en el aprendizaje creativo, las alianzas internacionales, el desarrollo académico, la innovación, la visualización de futuros alternativos y la construcción de ciudades mejores y más habitables”.
CIUDADES SOSTENIBLES
Explicó Pila que para pertenecer a este selecto grupo y obtener la Platinum ISO 37120, Doral debió y debe cumplir con 100 indicadores, resumidos en las siguientes áreas: economía, educación, energía, medio ambiente, finanzas, respuesta ante emergencias, gobierno, salud, seguridad, recreación, protección, desechos sólidos, telecomunicaciones, planificación urbana, aguas residuales, transporte y saneamiento del agua.
Pila suministró algunos ejemplos de los aspectos de las ciudades que son tomados en cuenta dentro de estos indicadores como, índice de empleo y desempleo, valor estimado de las propiedades, porcentaje de la población que vive en pobreza, número de estudiantes que culminan su educación y cantidad de residentes con servicio eléctrico.
También se puede mencionar la cantidad de bomberos y policías por cada 100 mil habitantes, número de homicidios por cada 100 mil residentes, la participación de votantes en las últimas elecciones municipales, el promedio de expectativa de vida, cantidad de médicos por cada 100 mil habitantes y porcentaje de población viviendo en suburbios.
Otros aspectos que son evaluados son el porcentaje de la población con servicio de re-colección de basura, cantidad de conexiones a internet por cada 100 mil habitantes, número anual de viajes en transporte público y de personas con vehículo propio, cantidad de áreas verdes por 100 mil habitantes y porcentaje de la población con servicio de agua potable.
“Como líder global de mediciones estandarizadas, el WCCD implementó estos indicadores para las comunidades que permiten evaluar los servicios municipales y la calidad de vida, por lo que nos orgullece que Doral haya recibido la más alta de estas certificaciones, la Platinum, por cumplir entre 91 y 100 de estos indicadores.”, agregó Pila.
Estos indicadores estandarizados permiten a las ciudades evaluar y comparar sus rendimientos a escala local e internacional, incentivan la creación de gobiernos más efectivos y con servicios más eficientes, permiten la toma de decisiones basadas en la evidencia, proporcionan un marco para la sostenibilidad y la resiliencia, propician la evaluación comparativa local e internacional, fomentan el aprendizaje comparativo y el intercambio de soluciones y ayudan a explorar opciones para atraer inversiones.
El objetivo de la WCCD es globalizar el uso de datos estandarizados que permitan realizar evaluaciones y comparaciones certeras. Es por esta razón que, en mayo del 2014, se implementó el ISO 37120 por la Organización Internacional de Estandarización (ISO). El ISO 37120 define y establece metodologías para una comprensión integral del conjunto de indicadores que permitirán a cualquier ciudad rastrear y medir su rendimiento social, económico y ambiental, en relación con otras ciudades.
Manuel Pila señala que obtener esta certificación fue un compromiso del departamento de informática de la Ciudad de Doral, a cargo de Gladys González, sin embargo, el apoyo brindado por todas las direcciones de la alcaldía, así como por el condado de Miami-Dade en las áreas de incendios, medio ambiente, desperdicios sólidos, agua y saneamiento, fue indispensable para recopilar los datos para la presentación de informes que permitieran alcanzar el éxito del proceso de certificación.
“La Ciudad de Doral ha realizado importantes inversiones como parte de su compromiso con el bienestar de la comunidad y la obtención de este certificado no sólo deja en evidencia que somos una localidad próspera, sino que también seguimos avanzado en la obtención de mejoras para la calidad de vida nuestros habitantes y comerciantes.”, destacó Pila.
Unirse al WCCD permite a las ciudades mejorar la transparencia y la rendición de cuentas con datos certeros que permiten tomar decisiones sensatas; identificar temas de gestión comunes; aprender y compartir soluciones con otras ciudades; acceder al portal de la WCCD para obtener informes de datos con mayor profundidad y capacidades de monitoreo; participar en cumbres de la ciudad, mesas redondas, seminarios web y otros eventos y actividades exclusivas de la WCCD; medir el rendimiento con otras ciudades WCCD y recibir publicaciones e informes de WCCD.
Esta certificación Platinum ISO 37120 también es compartida por ciudades como Dubai, Amsterdam, Melbourne y Barcelona.
