Doral Music Center is a music academy whose pillar is the Yamaha Music Foundation, a teaching method that allows both children and adults to learn music following an educational and consistent system. This method is based on three fundamental concepts: timely education, group lessons and emphasis on creativity. Thanks to the management and direction of Antonio Alvarado, our city has a center that operates following this methodology.

Alvarado has more than 25 years of experience in the area of the music and audio; first as a musician, then in sales and now as director and educator of the center. During his career, Alvarado became aware of the needs and cultural opportunities that exist in South Florida and decided to make a special contribution to his community, by opening this academy.

In 1954, Yamaha, the largest instrument manufacturer of the world, developed in Tokyo musical foundations for the teaching of this art. Currently Yamaha Music Foundation has more than 680.000 students in 5.400 locations worldwide. Alvarado explains, “Because of its exposure to the music, Yamaha created this innovative method that fits the current dynamic of our society. Yamaha discovered that if you find an efficient way to engage students to digest the required concepts, learning is made easier and this way they can start playing instruments in a short period. The atmosphere in our school is warm, where students feel safe and want to participate. This social integration is vital, because nowadays with all the technology children tend to be isolated”.

Alvarado clarifies, “The main concept is that if you can sing it you can play it. The traditional educational system to teach music has existed for centuries and it can be somewhat tedious or frustrating, making people quit halfway. It has almost always been taught on a unilateral basis, a teacher tells the student what to do.” Yamaha has incorporated a system of proven education and has determined that when classes are given in small groups (with a maximum of 6 participants) then students can benefit more than with individual classes, and in addition they share and have fun in a healthy way under the teachings and guidance of a professor.

With the Yamaha method fresh melodies are used and classical elements are incorporated afterwards. It is based in defined lessons and it is dictated in an organized manner, however each professor makes adjustments for each group. Alvarado explains, “We have a commitment to the families and to music itself.  We focus on the musical training of the child that depends on each student”.  At Doral Music Center they work very closely with the parents, the channels of communication are always open to see how the child is progressing. The ideal age to start a musical education is 4 years, although there is no rule for this. From his experience Alvarado sees that in Doral they start a bit older. “My students range from 3 to 52 years of age. We offer singing, piano, violin, guitar and bass classes. We speak with the children and the parents to see which instrument they are most interested in learning.”

“The wonderful thing about music is that with perseverance, gratification can be felt in a short period of time. It is a process, just as Edison said: “Success is 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration“.  It is hard work, but at the end there are great rewards.”

In South Florida there are only two schools that use Yamaha Music Foundations. Alvarado felt the need to open a center with such an inclusive method in Doral; a city with an important musical presence. “Our teachers take a rigorous examination, certified by Yamaha and are trained to learn their methodology.”

“This is an adventure,” says Alvarado. “Doral has great potential because it has excellent schools and there is a huge student population. However, because of the budget cuts, sometimes schools do not promote bands or musical education. The majority of the families of Doral have a favorable economic situation and acknowledge that the child’s academic side should be enhanced with other activities, not only sports, but also in the cultural field. It is preferable that children study music, practice some sport or do some form of art than play video games all day.”

Alvarado ends by saying, “I try to listen to my client and to get to know this market. I have my heart set on this project and I think that this center has incredible potential.  At the end music is culture, it is art, it is part of our lives; and as long as there are more families involved there are going to be more people who are doing something culturally positive and that way they will stay away from negative influences, or simply from indifference. One creates the community and the sense of family, and that is the basis of our society.”

DORAL MUSIC CENTER, enseña con los fundamentos de música de Yamaha.

Doral Music Center es una academia de música cuya columna vertebral es el Yamaha Music Foundation (Fundamentos de Música de Yamaha), un método de enseñanza que permite tanto a niños como adultos aprender música siguiendo un sistema educacional y consistente. 

Dicho método está basado en tres conceptos fundamentales: la educación en el tiempo, las clases en grupo y el énfasis en la creatividad.  Gracias a la gerencia y dirección de Antonio Alvarado, nuestra ciudad cuenta con este centro que funciona utilizando dicha metodología. 

Alvarado tiene más de 25 años de experiencia en el área de la música y el audio; primeramente como músico, luego en ventas y ahora como director y pedagogo del centro.   Durante su carrera, Alvarado se percató de las necesidades y oportunidades culturales que existen en el sur de la Florida y con la inquietud de hacer un aporte  especial a su comunidad, decidió abrir esta academia.

Yamaha, el fabricante más grande de instrumentos del mundo, desarrolló en Tokio, en 1954, unos fundamentos musicales para la instrucción de dicho arte. En la actualidad Yamaha Music Foundation cuenta con más de 680,000 alumnos en 5,400 locaciones a nivel mundial.  Alvarado explica, “Debido a su exposición a la música, Yamaha creó este método innovador que se ajusta a la actualidad de nuestra sociedad.  Yamaha descubrió que si se consigue una forma eficiente de enganchar a los estudiantes a los conceptos necesarios, el aprendizaje se hace más fácil y con esto pueden empezar a tocar instrumentos en poco tiempo.  El ambiente en nuestra escuela es cálido, en donde el alumno se siente seguro y busca integrarse.  Esta integración social es vital ya que hoy en día con la tecnología el niño tiende a aislarse”.

Alvarado aclara, “El concepto principal es que si lo puedes cantar lo puedes tocar. El sistema de enseñanza tradicional de música ha existido desde hace siglos y es a veces pesado o frustrante, lo que hace que muchos abandonan a mitad de camino.  Casi siempre se enseña de forma unilateral, un profesor le indica al estudiante lo que debe hacer.”  Yamaha ha incorporado un sistema de educación comprobado y ha determinado que cuando se imparten clases en grupo (con un máximo de 6 alumnos) entonces los niños aprovechan más que con clases particulares, ya que así comparten y se divierten de una forma sana bajo la tutela y guía de un profesor.

Con el método Yamaha se usan melodías frescas y luego se van incorporando elementos clásicos.  Tiene su basamento en lecciones definidas y se dicta de forma organizada, aunque cada profesor se ajusta al grupo. Alvarado explica, “Tenemos un compromiso con las familias y con la música en si. 

Nosotros nos enfocamos en el aprendizaje musical del niño que depende de cada estudiante”.  En Doral Music Center se trabaja muy de cerca con los padres, los canales de comunicación están siempre abiertos para ver como el estudiante va progresando.  La edad ideal para comenzar la educación musical es a los 4 años, aunque no hay un regla en esto.  Por su experiencia Alvarado ha visto que en Doral empiezan un poco más tarde.  “Mis estudiantes van desde los 3 hasta los 52 años de edad.  Ofrecemos clases de canto, piano, violín, guitarra y bajo.  Hablamos con los niños y los padres para ver cual es el instrumento que mas les interesa aprender.”

“Lo bonito de la música es que con algo de perseverancia, los periodos de satisfacción pueden ser cortos.  Hay que seguir un proceso, como dijo Edison: “El éxito es 90%  transpiración y 10% inspiración”.  Hay que trabajar duro pero al final hay grandes recompensas.”

En Florida hay sólo dos escuelas que utilizan los fundamentos de música de Yamaha.  Alvarado sintió la necesidad de abrir en una ciudad musical como Doral, que tiene tanta presencia Latina, una escuela con un método tan inclusivo. “Nuestros profesores pasan un examen riguroso, certificados por Yamaha y se entrenan para aprender su metodología.”

“Esto es una aventura,” comenta Alvarado. “Doral tiene mucho potencial ya que tiene escuelas públicas excelentes y hay una población estudiantil inmensa.  Sin embargo por los recortes, a veces no se promueven las bandas y la enseñanza musical.  La mayoría de las familias de Doral tienen una situación económica favorable y están de acuerdo en que se debe reforzar el lado académico de los hijos con actividades, no sólo deportivas, sino culturales.  Es preferible que el niño estudie música, practique algún deporte o esté en clases de pintura a que esté enfrente del Nintendo!”

Alvarado finaliza diciendo: “Trato de escuchar a mi cliente y así conocer mi mercado.  Tengo mi corazón puesto en este proyecto y creo que este centro tiene un potencial increíble.  Al final la música es cultura, es arte, es parte de nuestras vidas, y mientras haya más familias involucradas van a haber más personas que están haciendo algo culturalmente positivo y que estén alejados de las malas influencias, o simplemente de la indiferencia. Uno crea la comunidad y el sentido de familia, y esa es la base de la sociedad.“
