DORAL RESIDENTS REQUEST MORE POLICE SURVEILLANCE
Police and community work are the solution
A number of crimes in the City of Doral have driven both residents and business owners to request more police presence along the streets

Even though Doral is considered a safe city, during the last months, its residents have showed concern due to certain acts of robbery perpetrated against their homes, businesses and vehicles, which have driven them to request greater police surveillance.
Statistics from the City of Doral’s Police Department show an increase in crimes compared to the same period in 2016. As a matter of fact, this year 1,315 crime offenses have been perpetrated so far, compared to 1,274 offenses recorded in the same period of time last year, this proofs an increase of 3.22%.
According to Doral’s Police statistics, the greater increases were reflected on aggravated assaults, which increased 27%, home burglaries (4%), thefts (50%) and sexual offenses (56%). Fortunately and despite the events recorded during the last weeks, this year vehicle thefts decreased by 5%, while robberies to businesses decreased by 8%.
Although these increases are slight, they are enough to have Doral’s residents and businesses beginning to feel alarmed, as they don’t want Doral to stop being a safe city. For this reason they highlight the importance of working towards crime prevention and having more security officers guarding our streets.
AND WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING?
Pedro Salazar has been a Doral resident for ten years and even when he considers it a safe city, especially when comparing it with other Miami-Dade county cities, where you can even see homeless people on the streets; he thinks that it’s very important to stop this increase in crimes. “It’s like when you gain weight: if you don’t stop it, it gets out of control. The police cannot allow that to happen in Doral”.
Norah Lossada whom, besides being a Doral resident, is also a business owner in the city shares this opinion; therefore she is very concerned with the increase in crimes. “This is the place where I live, where my children live, where I have all my personal and business interests, that is why it is important to have more surveillance and police presence in the streets”.
However, Catherine Burns, who also lives and works in Doral, thinks differently. “I think that Doral’s Police Department always does a visible and proactive surveillance job, discouraging crime in our city. There will always be a level of crime in all big cities such as Miami, but I have never felt unsafe in Doral.”
Andreina Luciani does observe an increase of criminal events in the city of Doral, and considers that a greater police control is needed in the city. “There should be more talks in schools to create awareness in children and young people, as well as reinforcing informative and preventive workshops in the communities regarding crime increase. Of course, we as neighbors should raise awareness regarding the importance of taking part in these activities.”
For Saul Moncada it is unbelievable the fact that there has been an increase of crimes in Doral. “Whether it is much or little, that it is not the important issue; having an increase is serious and we cannot allow that in our community. I think that it’s urgent for us to have a greater amount of police officers; if there are more residents, there should be more police officers.”
Rita Gonzalez does not feel unsafe in Doral. “It’s true that I’ve seen on social media that some cars have been broken into, and even windows were broken, but I think that these are isolated cases, that we should not take them as a matter of public opinion. The important thing is that the police keeps vigilant so these events do not happen again.”
Hernan Martinez sees with concern this increase in crimes. “I think the key to solve this is that we have more officers. Doral has grown a lot in the last years, we are a lot of people and, therefore, we need much more services, among them security.”
For Ruben Alcalde, Doral is still a safe city. “I don’t think that there is an increase in crime. I live here, I work here, my children go to school here and I do not see that there is insecurity; what I do consider is that we, ourselves, should avoid being victims of robberies with simple actions such as, for example, installing alarms in our houses and not leaving valuables in our cars.”
THE AUTHORITIES SPEAK
Doral’s Mayor, Juan Carlos Bermudez, explains that after hurricane Irma, many people foreign to our community have come to make repairs, which could be related to the events that happened lately. “However, Doral police took immediate actions and not only made three detentions, but also implemented a special process with the affected communities.”
“The police has responded and they are alert, but the neighbors collaboration is also important, we need them to participate in the “Crime Watch” program, informing us regarding any irregular situation in the communities and they need to attend the prevention programs and workshops offered by Doral’s police department, as being informed is the first step on taking care of ourselves and prevent a crime”, says Mayor Bermudez.
Regarding the effectiveness of our safety force, Doral’s Mayor pointed out that currently Doral’s police count with the highest budget of its entire history (39%). “Even our chief of police, Donald De Lucca, assures that they have all the resources needed to work.” “The number of safety agents we have is also the greatest of our history. We have approximately 140 individuals, and we’ve also even incorporated eight new agents who are: Officer Samantha Simo and police service aides Rafael Blanco, Laura Delgado, Robert Guzman, Christian Lerchbacher, Eduardo Punyed, Genesis Vargas and Heidy Yordy.
On her part, councilwoman Christi Fraga points out that in the last months, residents and business owners of the city of Doral have been the target of residential, commercial and vehicle burglaries. “I consider that these incidents are alarming, not only because of the safety concerns they generate, but because the victims of a crime undergo through various emotions, such as helplessness, rage, sadness and fear.”
Fraga considers it is important to explain three important issues to the community: “the first one is that the investigations carried out by Doral’s police department, as well as by the Miami-Dade police investigations department, the camera images and different proofs of evidence, show that Doral has become a target for criminals that do not live in our city, and in second place, I feel that the City of Doral’s budget approved for the 2017-2018 fiscal year, which I did not support, doesn’t include additional legal resources needed to properly protect our growing community”.
“Lastly, and apart from the deficiencies that I found in the budget approved by the Municipal Council, we must recognize that Doral police officers are diligently working to do more with less and continue committed to crime prevention and the capture of criminals, thus they have increased community patrolling.”
With the purpose of offering greater safety to residents and business owners, Fraga recommends: “to increase the amount of full time of police officers, provide facilities, vehicles, equipment and additional training for our police force; work jointly with county, state and country police agencies; continue to educate our communities in the prevention and to open a police sub-station as soon as possible”.
DORAL POLICE
“Many people only think in crime when they are victims of a felony, but we, as police officers, think of that all the time”, says Captain Carlos Arango of Doral Police and adds that the objective of applying the law is to protect life, protect property and keep order.
“The way we apply the law depends in great extent on the community we serve. When a community is actively involved with its police department and the police is actively involved with its community, it’s most probable to achieve a safe community”.
Captain Arango recognizes that, recently, Doral faced five residential burglaries at the Doral Chase community and fifteen vehicle thefts in the Landmark community. “Even though they were only two incidents, it affected multiple victims, reason why, the Crime Analysis Unit of the Doral Police Department gathered the necessary information, increased patrolling in the area and is carrying out the corresponding investigations.” Arango added that, according to police statistics, up to October 2017, vehicle robbery incidents in Doral decreased by 5% compared with the same period in 2016 and there have only been 4% more cases of residential burglaries in 2017 compared with the same period last year, showing that we still are a safe community. “In order to keep on being a safe community and these numbers do not increase we have to work together, police, commerce and neighbors.”

“Doral police is also promoting the “See Something, Say Something” campaign to encourage everyone to report suspicious activities, since the idea is for us to be united and communicated in order to prevent crimes”, says captain Arango, who is sure that police work success depends, in great extent, on neighbors information and collaboration.
Regarding personal actions that we could follow towards safety, captain Arango reminded the importance of closing your houses doors and garages and not leaving valuables in your vehicles and locking them, keep your property’s alarm active, and even install motion sensors.

Algunos hechos delictivos en la ciudad de Doral han hecho que, tanto residentes como comerciantes, soliciten mayor presencia policial en las calles

Si bien Doral es considerada una ciudad segura, en los últimos meses, sus residentes han mostrado preocupación por ciertos asaltos ocurridos contra sus residencias, comercios y vehículos, lo que los ha llevado a solicitar una mayor vigilancia policial.
Las cifras del Departamento de la Policía de Doral demuestran un incremento de delitos al comparar los diez meses transcurridos del 2017, cuando se cometieron 1315 actos criminales con el mismo lapso de tiempo del 2016, en el que se registraron 1274 lo que evidencia un incremento del 3.22%.
Según las estadísticas de la Policía de Doral, los mayores incrementos se reflejaron en los asaltos agravados que aumentaron 27%, los robos a residencias (4%), los hurtos (16%), los robos (50%) y las ofensas sexuales (56%). Afortunadamente y a pesar de los hechos registrados en las últimas semanas, los robos contra vehículos disminuyeron en un 5%, al igual que los robos a comercios que bajaron en un 8%.
Si bien estos incrementos son leves, los residentes y comerciantes de Doral han empezado a sentirse alarmados, pues no quieren que Doral deje de ser una ciudad segura, por lo que señalan la importancia de trabajar en la prevención del delito y de que haya más agentes de seguridad vigilando nuestras calles.
… Y QUE DICE LA GENTE?
Pedro Salazar tiene diez años viviendo en Doral y aunque la considera una ciudad segura, especialmente al compararla con otras localidades del condado de Miami-Dade, donde incluso se ven muchos indigentes en las calles, cree que es importante detener este incremento de delitos. “Es como cuando uno aumenta de peso, si cuando empiezas a subir no lo detienes, luego se te sale de control. La policía no puede permitir que eso ocurra en Doral”.
Esta opinión es compartida por Norah Lossada, quien, además de residir en Doral también tiene su propia empresa en la ciudad, por lo que le preocupa mucho el aumento de los hechos delictivos. “Este es el sitio, donde yo resido, donde viven mis hijos, donde trabajo y tengo todos mis intereses personales y labores, por lo que es importante que haya más vigilancia y presencia policial en las calles”.
Sin embargo, Catherine Burns, quien también vive y trabaja en Doral, opina lo contrario. “Creo que el Departamento de Policía de Doral siempre hace un trabajo vigilante, visible y proactivo, disuadiendo el crimen de nuestra ciudad. Siempre habrá algún nivel de delincuencia en todas las áreas de las grandes ciudades como Miami, pero jamás me he sentido insegura en Doral”.
Andreina Luciani si observa un incremento de hechos delictivos en la ciudad de Doral, por lo que considera necesario un mayor control policial en la ciudad. “Hay que dar más charlas en las escuelas para concientizar a los niños y jóvenes, así como también reforzar los talleres informativos y preventivos en las comunidades sobre el aumento de la delincuencia. Claro, nosotros como vecinos debemos concientizarnos sobre la importancia de participar en estas actividades”.
A Saúl Moncada le parece increíble que hayan aumentado los delitos en Doral. “Sean muchos o pocos, eso no es lo importante, lo grave es hay un incremento y eso no lo podemos permitir en nuestras comunidades. Yo pienso que es urgente que tengamos una mayor cantidad de policías, pues así como hay más habitantes, también deben haber más policías”.
Rita González no se siente insegura en Doral. “Es cierto que he visto en las redes sociales que han abierto algunos carros e incluso roto ventanas, pero yo creo que estos son hechos aislados, que no podemos tomarlos como una matriz de opinión. Lo importante es que la policía se mantenga vigilante para que estos sucesos no se repitan”.
Hernán Martínez ve con preocupación este aumento de delincuencia. “Yo creo que la clave para solucionar esto es que tengamos más policías. Doral ha crecido mucho en los últimos años, somos muchas más personas y por ende, necesitamos muchos más servicios, entre ellos seguridad”.
Para Rubén Alcalde, Doral sigue siendo una ciudad segura. “No me parece que haya un incremento de delincuencia. Vivo aquí, trabajo aquí, mis hijos van a la escuela aquí y no veo que exista inseguridad, lo que si considero es que nosotros mismos debemos evitar ser víctimas de robos con acciones sencillas como, por ejemplo, instalar alarmas en nuestras viviendas y no dejar cosas de valor a la vista en nuestros carros”.
HABLAN LAS AUTORIDADES
El alcalde de Doral, Juan Carlos Bermúdez, explica que, después del paso del huracán Irma han venido a nuestra ciudad muchas personas ajenas a la misma a realizar trabajos de reparaciones, lo que puede estar relacionado con los hechos acaecidos durante los últimos días. “Sin embargo, la policía de Doral tomó acciones inmediatas y no sólo logró tres detenciones, sino que también implementó un proceso especial con las comunidades afectadas”.
“La policía ha reaccionado y se mantiene atenta, pero también es importante la colaboración de los vecinos, necesitamos que participen en el programa “Crime Watch”, informándonos sobre cualquier irregularidad en sus comunidades y que asistan a los programas y talleres preventivos que ofrece la policía de Doral, pues estar informados en cómo cuidarnos a nosotros mismos es el primer paso para evitar que un delito ocurra”, comenta el alcalde Bermúdez.
En cuanto a la operatividad de nuestro cuerpo de seguridad, el mandatario doralino destacó que en la actualidad la Policía de Doral tiene asignado el presupuesto más alto de toda su historia (39%). “Incluso, nuestro jefe de policía, Donald De Lucca, aseguró que tiene todos los recursos necesarios para trabajar”.
“La cantidad de agentes de seguridad con la que contamos también es la mayor de toda nuestra historia. Tenemos un aproximado de 140 hombres e incluso acabamos de incorporar a ocho nuevos agentes como lo son: la oficial Samantha Simo y los ayudantes del servicio policial: Rafael Blanco, Laura Delgado, Robert Guzmán, Christian Lerchbacher, Eduardo Punyed, Génesis Vargas y Heidy Yordy.
Por su parte, la concejal Christi Fraga señala que, en los últimos meses, los residentes y dueños de negocios en la ciudad de Doral han sido blanco de múltiples robos residenciales, comerciales y de vehículos. “Considero que estos incidentes son alarmantes, no sólo por las preocupaciones de seguridad que generan, sino porque después de haber sido víctima de un crimen, la persona experimenta una variedad de emociones, como desamparo, ira, tristeza y miedo”.
Para Fraga es importante explicar a la comunidad tres puntos importantes: el primero de ellos es que tanto las averiguaciones de la policía de Doral, como las investigaciones de la policía del condado de Miami-Dade, las imágenes de las cámaras y las pruebas indican que Doral se ha convertido en un blanco para criminales que no viven en nuestra ciudad, y en segundo lugar, siento que el presupuesto de la Ciudad de Doral aprobado para el año fiscal 2017-2018, el cual yo no apoyaba, no incluyó los recursos adicionales de ley que son necesarios para proteger adecuadamente a nuestra creciente comunidad”.
“Por último, e independientemente de las deficiencias que encontré en el presupuesto que fue aprobado por el Concejo Municipal, hay que reconocer que los oficiales de la Policía de Doral que están trabajando diligentemente para hacer más con menos y siguen comprometidos en la prevención del crimen y captura delincuentes, por lo que están aumentado el patrullaje por las comunidades”.
Con el propósito de ofrecer una mayor seguridad para los residentes y dueños de negocios, Fraga recomienda: aumentar la cantidad de agentes de policía a tiempo completo; proporcionar instalaciones, vehículos, equipo y entrenamiento adicionales para nuestra fuerza policial; trabajar en conjunto con agencias policiales del condado, del estado y del país; seguir educando a nuestras comunidades en la prevención y abrir la sub-estación de policía tan pronto como sea posible”.
POLICIA DE DORAL
“Muchas personas sólo piensan en el crimen cuando son víctimas de un delito, pero nosotros, como policías, pensamos en eso todo el tiempo”, indica el capitán Carlos Arango de la policía de Doral y agrega que el objetivo de la aplicación de la ley es proteger la vida, proteger la propiedad y mantener el orden.
“La forma en que aplicamos la ley depende en gran medida de la comunidad a la que servimos. Cuando una comunidad está activamente involucrada con su departamento de policía y la policía está activamente involucrada con su comunidad, es mucho más probable contar con una comunidad segura”.
El capitán Arango reconoce que, recientemente, Doral se enfrentó a cinco robos residenciales en la comunidad de Doral Chase y quince robos de vehículos en la comunidad de Landmark. “Aunque estos fueron sólo dos incidentes, afectaron a múltiples víctimas, por lo que, la Unidad de Análisis de Delitos del Departamento de Policía de Doral reunió la información necesaria, incrementó el patrullaje en la zona y se encuentra haciendo las investigaciones pertinentes”.
Arango agregó que, según las estadísticas policiales, a octubre del 2017, los incidentes de robo de vehículos en Doral bajaron 5% en comparación con el mismo período en 2016 y sólo ha habido un 4% más de casos de robos residenciales en el 2017 en comparación con el mismo período del año pasado lo que demuestra que, seguimos siendo una comunidad segura. “Para que continuemos siendo una ciudad segura y estos números no aumenten tenemos que trabajar juntos, policías, comerciantes y vecinos”.
La policía de Doral insta a las comunidades para que participen en el programa “Crime Watch”, pues es importante que los vecinos se conozcan y llamen a la policía cuando vean algo sospechoso. “La policía de Doral también está promoviendo la campaña “See Something, Say Something” para animar a todos a reportar actividades sospechosas, ya que la idea es que estemos unidos y comunicados para prevenir el delito”, manifiesta el capitán Arango quien está seguro que éxito del trabajo policial depende, en gran medida, de la colaboración e información vecinal.
Con respecto a las acciones personales que podemos seguir en cuanto a seguridad, el capitán Arango recordó la importancia de cerrar las puertas de su casa y de su garaje, no dejar objetos de valor en su automóvil y también cerrarlo, mantener activa la alarma de su propiedad e incluso, instalar sensores de movimiento.
