Junior Girl Scouts from Doral Troop 552 organized “One Day Without Shoes”
Junior Girl Scouts from Doral Troop 552 organized the event “One Day Without Shoes” as a community project to pursue their Bronze Award, the first recognized award in the Girl Scout organization. As part of the initiative, the girls organized two different events at Renaissance Elementary Charter School and John I Smith K-8 Center which included barefoot walking with games and trivia activities, shoe collection boxes in both locations and a cash donation campaign.
Thanks to the planning, organization and enthusiasm of these 4th and 5th grade girls, the project was a great success. They were able to raise awareness of the importance of having shoes and also support and care for those less fortunate in our community. They collected about 258 pair of shoes, from which 70 pairs that were in poor condition were donated to Converse so they can be ground up into playground surfaces, and 188 pairs of good condition shoes were donated to Camillus House. Finally, with cash donations of $343, the girls will buy new sneakers for teenagers at Miami Rescue Mission.
Congratulations to each of these 14 future leaders of our community for this excellent initiative.
