Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and Board Member Susie V. Castillo held Community Meetings at RRDSH
Community members from Doral and other surrounding areas of Miami Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) Central Region and Educational District 5 had the chance of interacting with Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and School Board Member Susie V. Castillo during their recent outreach events, both of them held at Ronald W. Reagan/ Doral Senior High School (RRDSH).
These activities allow them to educate the community on the different choices, programs and advantages offered by the system and also to obtain first-hand feedback to provide a better service in public education.
The first of these events was an Education Community Meeting, hosted by Ms. Castillo on January 28th, where a series of presentations provided parents and students with valuable information on different matters relevant for academic performance. In addition, the event included the showcase of artistic representations by students from all public schools on District 5.
On February 12th it was the turn for Superintendent Carvalho to hold one of his “favorite quarterly events: the Superintendent’s Student Roundtable” for schools in Central Region. This is an outreach initiative oriented especially for providing high school seniors with a comfortable environment for asking questions and sharing with the Superintendent their views on their educational experience within the Public Schools system.
It was an honor and a privilege for Mr. Juan Carlos Silva, Principal at RRDSH that MDCPS authorities had selected his school to host their events given that there are approximately twenty five schools within the Central Region that could have hosted these outreach opportunities “and he chose us. We are honored and hopefully we represented our Region very well and gave students an opportunity to converse with the superintendent which is something he looks forward to do.”
The event was livestreamed to all schools in Central Region through the Reagan TV website, allowing with the use of the top technology installed at RRDSH that all students in the area received in real time the message from Superintendent Carvalho, who has made one of his priorities during his more than six years on the post, to provide schools with the tools to expand the connectivity between students and community.
Education Community Meeting hosted by Board Member Susie Castillo
Following presentations by the Bison Band and the cheerleading teams from Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center and RRDSH, this community event on January 28th started with a presentation for parents of Senior Students on the procedures for filing the FAFSA in order to apply for federal financial aid for college education.
It all was a preamble for the main presentations, introduced by School Board Member for District 5, Ms. Susie Castillo that included valuable information about Florida Curriculum standards and assessments, progress on the capital investment projects based on the General Obligation Bonds (GOB) and school safety.
This event represented for Castillo “a wonderful opportunity to connect with the residents of Doral and other nearby areas in my district. I very much enjoyed speaking with parents, teachers, community leaders, and of course, our students throughout the event.”
The main points included on the Florida Standards and Assessments presentation explained that the new tests designed will assess the ability of students on higher-order thinking skills, requiring from them to expand answers with graphs, long responses and content analysis, breaking with traditional multiple choice structure of previous standardized tests. This design provides a more accurate measure of the Florida Standards contents received by students.
During school year 2014-2015 there will be standardized tests in Language Arts for grades 3-11, Writing 4-11, Mathematics 3-8 and EOC tests for Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry.
The results of these tests refocus the formula for grading school performance based on the percentage of total points obtained on the different areas evaluated (Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies), and including additional metrics related to student success such as performance achievements, learning gains, graduation rates and college credit or industry certification earned.
Regarding the progress of the new school developments and GOB projects for existing schools in her district, Castillo expressed her satisfaction with the upcoming opening of the Downtown Doral charter school, that will be operated by MDCPS: “I think it will be a great addition to the area and offer parents more choices when it comes to their children’s education, particularly when it comes to bilingual education.”
A total of $ 82 million were allocated from the GOB for 22 projects in District 5. Out of those, 12 projects were initiated between 2013 and 2014; three of them are already under construction and nine in design. Five projects will be starting by the summer of 2015, including a new K-8 Center in Doral.
“I am very much looking forward to the building of a new K-8 center located at NW 90TH Street and 114TH Avenue, over the next two years. This will certainly be a welcome addition in the northwest area and will greatly help in relieving all the other K-8s in Doral. Over the next years we will continue moving forward with plans to relieve Reagan/Doral Senior High School and create additional opportunities for high school students in Doral. Overall, I believe we are moving in the right direction and working closely with developers, to find solutions that best accommodate our students.”
The closing performances for the event included students from Paul Bell Middle, Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Elementary and John I. Smith K-8 Center, allowing all schools on District 5 to be represented, showcasing for parents and community members the outstanding artistic programs offered at these public education institutions.
Student Outreach Meeting with Superintendent Alberto Carvalho
“I always find this conversation enlightening” said Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, breaking the ice for an open and informative session, where seniors from all schools within the Central Region of the Miami-Dade Public Schools District listened to his inspiring personal story, learned about the current status of the MDCPS system and were able to ask questions and share their opinions about their educational experience.
The students of RRDSH Culinary Program showcased their talents preparing the breakfast offered to the teams from the nineteen schools that attended the event. In representation of RRDSH, Senior Class President Giuliana Canizares was in charge of introducing Superintendent Carvalho, highlighting his leadership skills that have obtained national recognition for MDCPS.
On his speech Carvalho encouraged students to openly share their questions and concerns with him and explained to them the importance of having selected seniors to participate on this conversation: “The fact that you are seniors gives you a perspective that perhaps a freshman would not have. The fact that you have been in MDCPS for 11+ years and you are about to be done is quite helpful to me because I can pick your brains.”
“You can ask me everything, I am not an elected official, I try to not shy away from questions. If it is in my heart and my mind, it will come out of my mouth. I feel I have the best job in the world”, said Carvalho before he started sharing his inspirational story of hard work and success that have conducted him to lead the MDCPS.
“I was able to enroll in college and only paid for the first semester, because the rest was paid with scholarships for academic performance. I could get my bachelors, then my masters. The rest is history. If there is a doubt on how great this country is look at me, I am able to be the Superintendent and speak to students about my journey here”, said Carvalho, before explaining the many challenges he encountered in MDCPS six years ago when he assumed his position and how the district has been transformed until being recognized with the National Broad Prize for Urban Education for its improvement.
“There is greatness and brilliance in our school system but there are also challenges. The difference between success and failure begins with your own determination, with you knowing who you are and who you want to be.”
Students asked questions about the impact of the new Florida Standards in education and the use of the assessments as tools to measure school performance. This lead Carvalho to express his disagreement with over testing related to the new standards.
“There are tests and screening for all school levels and if you put together all those days it makes 60 days. We made a huge investment in technology in classrooms and computers but if you are going to tie those resources for 60 days a year to tests, then the resources are not being used for teaching and learning. I am not saying we shouldn’t test at all. Testing is necessary. But going from no testing to over testing is going too far.”
Carvalho concluded his speech with an advice and also a request for this generation of young people: “It is ok to be different, to be daring, to be challenging. That is my expectation from you. I don’t expect you only to pass your tests, your programs, your graduation requirements; I expect you to question everything: government, people; your college, when you see them doing something that is not necessarily that right. Be the curious generation, be the demanding generation, but also be the compassionate generation. Try never, ever to ignore the humanity in others. Looking away from it is choosing to ignore half of the world.”
La Junta Escolar se acerca a la comunidad de Doral

Las comunidades de Doral y otras áreas cercanas de la Región Central del Sistema de Escuelas Públicas de Miami-Dade (MDCPS) y el Distrito Escolar #5, tuvieron la oportunidad de interactuar, durante los recientes eventos realizados en Ronald W. Reagan/ Doral Senior High School (RRDSH), con el Superintendente de Escuelas Alberto Carvalho y la Sra. Susie V. Castillo, Miembro de la Junta Escolar.
Estas actividades les permitieron educar a la comunidad sobre los diferentes programas, opciones y ventajas que ofrece el Sistema escolar público, además que pudieron recopilar la información necesaria para evaluar necesidades y proveer un mejor servicio educativo en la zona.
El primero de estos eventos fue una Reunión de Educación Comunitaria, organizada por Ms. Castillo el día 28 de Enero. Allí se presentó a los padres información valiosa sobre asuntos relacionados con el desempeño académico. Adicionalmente se incluyeron demostraciones de talento artístico por parte de los estudiantes de las escuelas del Distrito 5.
El 12 de Febrero fue el turno del Superintendente Carvalho, quien realizó uno de sus eventos trimestrales favoritos: “ Mesa Redonda con los Estudiantes” para las escuelas de la Región Central. Esta iniciativa abre oportunidades a los estudiantes de las secundarias para expresarse libremente y hacer preguntas al Superintendente sobre su experiencia dentro del Sistema Escolar Publico.
Para Juan Carlos Silva, Director de RRDSH, ha sido un honor y un privilegio que las autoridades escogieran su escuela para estos eventos, pues en la región central hay 25 escuelas que pudieran haber sido consideradas. “Estamos muy honrados y agradecidos. Esperamos haber representado muy bien a nuestra Región al proporcionar a los estudiantes esta oportunidad de conversar con el Superintendente.”
El evento fue transmitido en vivo a todas las escuelas de la Región Central a través del website del canal Reagan TV. De esa manera, la tecnología de punta instalada en RRDSH permitió que todos los estudiantes del área recibieran en tiempo real el mensaje de Carvalho, quien ha puesto entre las primeras prioridades desde que asumió su cargo la incorporación de las tecnologías a la experiencia educativa de los estudiantes de Miami-Dade.
Reunión Comunitaria con Susie Castillo, Miembro de la Junta Escolar
La presentación de la Banda Bison y los equipos de animadoras de Eugenia B. Thomas k-8 Center y RRDSH fueron el abreboca para el evento comunitario del 28 de Enero, que comenzó con una presentación para los padres sobre los procedimientos y uso del FAFSA para aplicar a financiamiento federal para la universidad.
A continuación las presentaciones principales incluyeron información muy valiosa sobre los nuevos exámenes y contenidos establecidos por el Estado de Florida para sus estudiantes; también se presentó el progreso en las obras de infraestructura financiados por los Bonos GOB.
Para Castillo, este evento representa “una gran oportunidad de acercarme a los residentes de Doral y otros vecinos de mi área. He disfrutado mucho conversar en el evento con los padres, maestros, líderes comunitarios y por supuesto los estudiantes.”
Los puntos principales contemplados en los nuevos programas y exámenes del estado de Florida, implicarán de parte de los estudiantes poner en practica muchas otras habilidades adicionales, tales como pensamiento complejo, utilización de gráficos, respuestas largas y análisis de contenido. Esto cambia completamente los paradigmas anteriores respecto a la estructura o formato de los exámenes estatales. Su diseño permite una medición más precisa de los contenidos del Florida Estándar asimilado por los estudiantes.
Durante el año escolar 2014-2015 habrá exámenes en Lengua Inglesa desde el grado 3 al 11; escritura 4-11, Matemática 3-8 y habrá exámenes finales (EOC) de Algebra1, Algebra 2 y Geometría.
Con los resultados de estos exámenes, el foco de la fórmula para evaluar el desempeño de las escuelas se basará en el porcentaje total de las diferentes áreas evaluadas (Inglés, matemática, ciencia, sociales) incluyendo métricas adicionales relacionadas con el éxito de los estudiantes, como por ejemplo logros de desempeño, habilidades aprendidas, tiempo de graduación y certificaciones de programas avanzados o vocacionales.
Con respecto al progreso del desarrollo de la nueva escuela y otros proyectos GOB para las escuelas existentes en el distrito, Castillo se mostró satisfecha por la próxima apertura de la escuela chárter Downtown Doral, que será operada por MDCPS. “Será una gran adquisición para el área. Ofrece muchas opciones educativas, en particular el programa bilingüe.”
Se reservaron $82 millones para 22 proyectos en el distrito 5, de los cuales 12 se iniciaron entre 2013 y 2014; tres de ellos están en construcción y nueve en diseño. Cinco proyectos más comenzaran en el verano de 2015, incluyendo la construcción del nuevo Centro K-8.”
“Espero con alegría la construcción del Nuevo edificio del K-8 que haremos entre la NW 90 calle y la 114 avenida. Será una muy buena adquisición para el área noroeste del distrito, y ayudará a desahogar espacio en los otros institutos K-8. Seguiremos trabajando en los próximos años en el plan de abrir nuevas oportunidades de educación secundaria que ofrezcan un espacio de crecimiento para RRDSH y alternativas para los estudiantes de secundaria del futuro. Pienso que vamos en la dirección correcta al trabajar con los desarrolladores de viviendas, para encontrar soluciones que ofrezcan alternativas para ubicar nuestros estudiantes.”
Para cerrar, se presentaron estudiantes de Paul Bell Middle, Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Elementary y John I. Smith K-8 Center, completando el grupo de escuelas del Distrito 5 que presentaron a los padres y miembros de la comunidad los maravillosos programas de arte que se ofrecen en estas instituciones públicas.
Reunión con los Estudiantes y el Superintendente Alberto Carvalho
“Estas conversaciones me iluminan las ideas” dijo el Superintendente Alberto Carvalho, rompiendo el hielo para una sesión informativa abierta, donde los seniors de todas las escuelas de la Región Central de Miami-Dade pudieron escuchar la inspiradora historia personal del Superintendente, aprendieron sobre el estatus actual de los programas del MDCPS, hicieron preguntas y emitieron opiniones sobre su experiencia educativa.
El desayuno ofrecido a los equipos representantes de las diecinueve escuelas presentes fue preparado por los estudiantes de Arte Culinario de RRDSH. La Presidente de la Clase del 2015, Srta. Giuliana Canizares, tuvo a cargo la introducción de Superintendente Carvalho, destacando las habilidades de liderazgo que le han permitido obtener reconocimiento nacional para MDCPS.
Carvalho aprovechó su presentación para entusiasmar a los jóvenes a hacerle directamente preguntas o compartir sus preocupaciones. “El hecho que ustedes sean Seniors les da una perspectiva que muy probablemente no tendría un Freshman. El que ustedes hayan estado en MDCPS por más de 11 años es muy útil porque puedo ‘picar’ su curiosidad.”
“Pueden preguntar lo que quieran. No soy oficial electo ni me quedo callado con preguntas incomodas. Si esta en mi corazón y en mi mente voy a decir lo que pienso. Este es el mejor trabajo del mundo,” dijo Carvalho antes de comenzar su historia de inspiración, trabajo y éxito que le han llevado a liderar los destinos del sistema escolar de Miami-Dade.
“
Pude inscribirme en la universidad y solamente tuve que pagar el primer semestre; después tuve becas por desempeño académico. Obtuve mi licenciatura y maestría y el resto es historia. Si alguien duda de la grandeza de este país que piense en mí, que siendo inmigrante pude llegara ser Superintendente y puedo explicarle a los jóvenes como llegar hasta aquí,” dijo Carvalho, antes de comentar los múltiples retos que consiguió en el Sistema Escolar cuando asumió su cargo seis años atrás, transformando el sistema en ganador del Premio Nacional Broad a la Educación Urbana, por el progreso y mejoras obtenidas en las escuelas de Miami-Dade.
“Hay grandeza y brillo en nuestro Sistema escolar, pero también hay retos. La diferencia entre el éxito y el fracaso está en la determinación, en saber quién eres y a dónde quieres ir.”
Los estudiantes hicieron preguntas sobre el impacto de los nuevos programas educativos de Florida y el uso de los exámenes para calcular el desempeño de las escuelas. Esto llevo a Carvalho a expresar su desacuerdo con el exceso de evaluaciones sobre los nuevos programas educativos.
“Hay exámenes y pruebas a todos los niveles educativos y si sumamos la cantidad de días dedicados a esa actividad suman 60. Después de haber invertido tanto dinero en tecnología para apoyar el proceso de aprendizaje ver que esos recursos están sin uso por estar invirtiendo el tiempo en hacer evaluaciones es una pena. Los exámenes son necesarios, pero pasar de no tener exámenes a tener demasiados es ir muy lejos.”
Carvalho concluyó su discurso con un consejo y una petición para estos jóvenes: “Está bien ser diferentes, osados y retadores. Eso es lo que espero de ustedes. No espero que solamente pasen sus exámenes y programas para llenar requisitos de graduación. Yo espero que cuestionen todo: el gobierno, la gente, las universidades, si ven que suceden cosas que no están necesariamente bien. Sean la generación de la curiosidad, la generación de la exigencia, pero también la generación de la compasión. Y jamás ignoren la humanidad de las demás personas, porque al ignorar a las personas estarán omitiendo a la mitad del mundo.”
