Doral students will shine in College Football.
National Signing Day, celebrated on February 4th, was a memorable day for Shawn Curtis, Juan Saldarriaga, Steven Mejia and T.J. Callan, seniors at Ronald W. Reagan/ Doral Senior High School, who signed their letters of intent to practice College Football next fall.
Their names have been sounding for a while among scouts and admissions officials, for their quality on the field and also in academics, a characteristic that makes both administrators and coaches at RRDSH proud of the well rounded individuals that graduate from the institution.
The prestige of the football programs these students have committed to adds up to the many accolades year after year RRDSH receives for the quality of its graduates. Steven Mejia will attend Princeton University, number one university in the country and the oldest football program, member of the Ivy League; T.J. Callan will attend University of West Florida; Juan Saldarriaga committed to Valley City State University and Shawn Curtis will call Ole Miss, University of Mississippi, home for the next four years.
Although many Reagan graduates from previous years have signed to play sports in college, this was the first big signing ceremony for football. ”This is a culmination of all the hard work and dedication these kids have gone through academically and athletically, “commented Coach John Lopez. “These young men are proof and the outcome of what we have been doing these past years at RRDSH. It goes hand in hand, we are known to be a strong discipline and academics school and we also strive in athletics. Our kids are smart as well as dedicated, in the classroom and the field. It carries over. It is a great combination to have and also it is a great place to work.”
These students are product of the public school system in the City of Doral and also have practiced at the sports programs in place by the Parks and Recreations Department. Mayor Luigi Boria and Ms. Barbara Hernandez, Parks and Recreation Director, along with City Manager Eddie Rojas and other members of the Staff were in attendance at the ceremony to congratulate the students and their parents and expressed their pride on seeing how far these students will go to represent Doral at the prestigious college institutions they will attend, most of them receiving full scholarship, based on their academic and athletic talents.
“This is really good for our city” said Boria, “perhaps in five years these young men will be in the news and earning great salaries as professional players. Time passes and even though this school is very new, many brilliant people have already graduated from here and are taking their athletic and academic talents beyond our borders. Graduates from Reagan are going to be the stars of the future for our great City of Doral. As public servants we are really proud to be here celebrating their achievements.”
It takes a village to raise student-athletes
It was an emotional day for everyone present at the ceremony to support these students, especially to their parents, who have definitely played a main role on guiding their children to this success. Not a single dry eye was there in the packed auditorium when their names were announced, they signed and tradition marked the unforgettable moment they put on their caps showing their commitment to their college teams.
Shawn Curtis’ mother expressed that the dedication her son has put towards this goal has been the key for him having this achievement. “Everyday practices, lots of clothes and lots of laundry” she laughed at the memory, “but he has worked very hard and I am very proud.”
“It is a dream come true going to Ole Miss” said Shawn Curtis, who will play Linebacker for the Rebels. “I love the place and the people there. I am still deciding to major either in business, science or criminal justice. I feel like this college is the right place for me, where I will better myself as a man, academically and athletically. I like the tradition that plays a big part at that school.”
Steven Mejia, who will graduate on the top 3% of the Class of 2015, will be a Princeton Tiger, playing as Kicker. “His commitment and sacrifice has been incredible, all his life following his dream” said Steven’s father. “He is very mature and devoted to his studies and his football practice and now he is reaping the fruits of his efforts.”
Also Steven’s mom credits his success to his discipline and time management skills “his dedication and the support he received at school and at home has been instrumental for him to always move forward and succeed.”
Steven thanked Coach Lopez especially for his support “He always guided me through the whole process and told me how hard I had to work to achieve my dream. I had to do everything I could in the amount of time I had and made many sacrifices, but they are small when you think on the main goal. Now that I am here signing for Princeton I see it was worth it.”
Juan Saldarriaga will be playing as Linebacker at Coach Lopez’s Alma Mater, Valley City State University, in North Dakota. His mother thanked Lopez for all his guidance and support. “We are really thankful; he helped Juan make the decision. With love, discipline and in God’s hands we have achieved this success. The community has been really important on this process. He has played with the programs in the parks and I hope there are many more programs like those in the future where all children in the city can play sports like Juan.”
He is planning to major in sports management and playing college football “has always been my dream. I am really excited about going to Valley City. I loved being a Bison, my teammates, my coach. I loved being in this school, it has been a great four years!” said Juan.
T.J. Callan will be attending University of West Florida in Pensacola as part of the first football team at that institution, which is launching their college football program. “It is an established university and they are expanding their campus” explained T.J. father. “They want to be a powerhouse. It is going to be a freshmen team and their first game will be in 2016. They brought in coaches that everywhere they go they win. We are super excited of being involved in this program.”
“Academically is very challenging and strong. We are very happy of him going to a well-respected institution where they continue the tradition that Coach Lopez started here in Reagan about character and perseverance, about being great men and great athletes” said Mrs. Callan. “Coach Lopez is a great man, a great role model for these kids. We are honored to have had T.J. played for him. We try to nurture our children’s passions and talents and encourage their spirits. You got to support your kids to see them do well, shine and go after their dreams. It takes a village.”
T.J. started doing sports in the public parks in Doral, joining Little League to later making the transition to football and for him living in Doral and attending Reagan “has been an amazing experience. I have been living here my whole life; is an awesome city and the coaches are amazing. Going to the next level I will be proud to represent the Bison at UWF in Pensacola.”
These students will be showcasing the talents they fostered at Reagan at their new endeavors and have set the bar very high for the future generations of students. “The Bison Spirit is growing everyday” said Coach Stephen Morejon looking proudly at the emotional crowd that cheered for the students committing for college. “They have the athletics and the academics have to be there too. This is a fantastic institution, great teachers and administrators. And it is only going to get better.”

Estudiantes de Doral brillarán en Futbol Universitario

Callan de Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School, quienes firmaron sus cartas de intención para jugar futbol universitario, en el marco de la celebración del Día Nacional de Firma Universitaria.
Los nombres de estos jóvenes estuvieron durante mucho tiempo en la mira tanto de los reclutadores universitarios como de los oficiales de admisiones, por sus cualidades tanto en el campo de juego como a nivel académico. Esto enorgullece a los maestros, administradores y entrenadores de RRDSH, quienes tienen la responsabilidad de formar los individuos integrales que egresan de esta institución.
Estas jóvenes promesas deportivas han firmado para jugar en programas de gran prestigio nacional, y esto se une a los reconocimientos que año tras año RRDSH recibe por la calidad de sus graduandos. Steven Mejía asistirá a Princeton, la universidad número uno del país y el más antiguo programa de futbol universitario, miembro del Ivy League; T.J. Callan ha aceptado la oferta de la Universidad de West Florida; Juan Saldarriaga estudiará en Valley City State University y Shawn Curtis se unirá a la tradición de Ole Miss en la Universidad de Mississippi.
Aun cuando en años anteriores graduados de Reagan han firmado para practicar deportes a nivel universitario, esta fue la primera gran ceremonia para el programa de futbol. “Esta es la culminación del trabajo arduo y la dedicación académica y atlética que estos jóvenes han puesto en sus estudios” comentó Coach John López, coordinador del programa de futbol de RRDSH. “Estos jóvenes son resultado de todo el entrenamiento que han recibido los últimos cuatro años en RRDSH. Disciplina estricta, altos estándares académicos y esfuerzo atlético, todos van de la mano en esta escuela. Nuestros jóvenes son inteligentes y dedicados, en las aulas y en el campo deportivo. Es una gran combinación. Reagan es una gran institución y un excelente sitio de trabajo.”
Estos jóvenes se han formado en las escuelas públicas de la Ciudad de Doral y han practicado deportes en los programas que la Dirección de Parques y Recreación lleva a cabo para los ciudadanos. El Alcalde Luigi Boria, la Directora de Parques Bárbara Hernández, el Administrador de la Ciudad Eddie Rojas y otros empleados de la Ciudad también hicieron acto de presencia en la ceremonia para felicitar a los jóvenes, a sus padres, y expresarles el orgullo que constituye para Doral tener representantes en las instituciones tan prestigiosas donde estudiarán estos jóvenes, muchos de ellos con beca completa, basada en sus talentos deportivos y académicos.
“Esto es muy bueno para nuestra Ciudad” dijo Boria. “Posiblemente en el futuro estos jóvenes estarán en las noticias, ganando salarios millonarios como jugadores profesionales. El tiempo pasa y aunque esta escuela es muy nueva, ya tenemos muchos graduados de aquí brillando fuera de nuestra ciudad con sus talentos atléticos y académicos. Ellos serán las estrellas del futuro de nuestra gran Ciudad de Doral. Como servidores públicos estamos muy orgullosos y complacidos de celebrar sus logros.”
Criar estudiantes-atletas es trabajo de equipo
Fue un día muy emotivo para todos los presentes en la ceremonia, en especial para los padres de estos jóvenes, quienes han jugado un papel fundamental para guiar a sus hijos hacia el éxito. Lágrimas de orgullo y alegría acompañaron el momento en que se anunciaron sus nombres, firmaron y siguieron la tradición de colocarse las gorras que les identifican como miembros de sus equipos universitarios.
La madre de Shawn Curtis habló sobre la dedicación y enfoque de su hijo hacia su objetivo fueron la clave del éxito. “Prácticas diarias, mucho esfuerzo y montones de ropa para lavar” comentó entre risas “pero su dedicación y lo duro que ha trabajado por esto me hacen sentir muy orgullosa.”
“Para mí es un sueño hecho realidad poder asistir a Ole Miss” dijo Shawn, quien jugará como Linebacker de los Rebels. “Me encanta la universidad y su gente. Aun no decido si estudiaré negocios, ciencias o justicia criminal, pero sé que este es el sitio correcto para mí, donde podré crecer como persona, académicamente y como atleta. Me gusta mucho que las tradiciones son parte importante de la esencia de la escuela.”
Steven Mejía, quien se gradúa en el 3% superior de la Clase del 2015 de Reagan, jugará como Kicker para los Princeton Tigers. “Su compromiso y sacrificios toda la vida para seguir sus sueños han sido increíbles” dijo el padre de Steven. “Siempre con una madurez y dedicación a sus estudios y a su práctica del futbol, ahora está recogiendo los frutos de su esfuerzo.”
La madre de Steven atribuye el éxito de su hijo a su disciplina y habilidad para el manejo del tiempo “su dedicación y el apoyo que ha recibido en la escuela y en la casa han sido fundamentales para siempre seguir adelante.”
Steven agradece especialmente a Coach López por su apoyo “me guio a través de todo el proceso y me decía que trabajara muy duro para poder lograr mi sueño. Tenía que hacer todo lo que tuviera pendiente en el tiempo disponible y tuve que hacer muchos sacrificios, pero son pocos comparados con el gran logro obtenido. Ahora que estoy firmando para estudiar en Princeton veo que ha valido la pena el esfuerzo.”
Juan Saldarriaga jugará como Linebacker en Valley City State University, Alma Mater de Coach López, ubicada en North Dakota. La madre de Juan agradece enormemente a López todo su apoyo “Estamos realmente agradecidos, el ayudó a Juan a tomar su decisión. Con amor, disciplina y de la mano de Dios hemos llegado a este éxito. La comunidad es realmente muy importante en este proceso. [Juan] jugó en los programas de los parques de la ciudad y deseo que haya muchos más programas como este en el futuro, donde más jóvenes puedan practicar deportes igual que él.”
Juan piensa estudiar administración deportiva, pero jugar futbol universitario “ha sido siempre mi mayor sueño. Estoy realmente muy emocionado de ir a Valley City. Me encantó ser un Bison; tengo mucho cariño por mi escuela, mis compañeros de equipo y mi entrenador. ¡Han sido cuatro años extraordinarios!”
T.J. Callan asistirá a la Universidad de West Florida en Pensacola. Va a formar parte del primer equipo de futbol de esa institución, quienes están iniciando su programa de futbol universitario. “Es una universidad establecida que está en expansión y quieren convertirse en una potencia deportiva” explicó el padre de T.J. “El equipo lo forman solamente estudiantes de primer año y tendrán su primer partido en el 2016. Los entrenadores tienen tradición ganadora. Estamos realmente emocionados que nuestro hijo participe de este programa.”
“Académicamente también es muy fuerte y retador. Estamos felices que estará asistiendo a una institución respetable que además continua la tradición establecida por Coach López aquí en Reagan, basada en preparar hombres buenos y grandes atletas a fuerza de mucho carácter y perseverancia,” explicó la Sra. Callan. “Coach López es un gran hombre, un ejemplo para estos jóvenes. Ha sido un honor que T.J. entrenara con él. Siempre hemos querido apoyar las pasiones y talentos de nuestros hijos y mantener su entusiasmo. Como padres debemos apoyar a nuestros hijos para que sean exitosos, brillantes y que persigan sus objetivos y sueños.”
T.J. comenzó muy pequeño a hacer deporte en los parques de Doral, en la liga de béisbol, para después hacer la transición al futbol. Para el, vivir en Doral y estudiar en Reagan “ha sido una experiencia fabulosa. He vivido aquí toda mi vida, es una hermosa ciudad, excelente escuela y los entrenadores maravillosos. Voy a estar muy orgulloso de representar a los Bison en UWF en Pensacola.”
Estos jóvenes estarán mostrando los talentos adquiridos y desarrollados en Reagan en sus nuevos destinos académicos y dejan muy altos los estándares para las generaciones futuras de estudiantes. “El Espíritu del ‘Bison’ crece cada día” dijo Coach Stephen Morejón mirando con orgullo a la ‘manada’ que emocionada vitoreaba a los estudiantes cuando firmaron sus compromisos universitarios. “Aquí estos jóvenes tienen los retos atléticos y académicos; esta es una gran institución con fantásticos maestros y administradores, y lo mejor esta aun por venir.”
