An education is the main asset, if not the only one, parents can inherit to their children. It is part of the American Dream for immigrants who have worked hard to obtain their legal status in this country. However, the college education dream can be elusive for those without the funds to cover it and those who do not get informed of the many alternatives available to receive financial aid for education. Filling out FAFSA is the first step to being eligible to qualify for many of those financial assistance programs.

FAFSA stands for “Free Application for Federal Student Aid”.  This process can be done in English or Spanish. Parents of college-bound students (high school seniors graduating in the class of 2014) should rush starting January 1 to fill out the form because universities and colleges use the information from FAFSA to calculate additional financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants and loans when issuing their offer of admission packages.

Although filling out FAFSA is not mandatory and does not have a deadline, it is very important to do it early in the year if the student is interested on receiving some kind of financial aid from the government, because state and college funds are granted on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis and are awarded until depleted. The State of Florida determines eligibility for some of the Florida Financial Assistance programs with that information. Students currently in college also have to resubmit the application every year to continue receiving their financial assistance

Only students with a valid Social Security Number (U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents or eligible non-citizens) can apply for federal financial aid as this kind of assistance is not provided for undocumented students or illegal aliens. Students who are in the U.S. on an F1 or F2 student visa, a J1 or J2 exchange visitor visa, or a G series visa (pertaining to international organizations), will not be eligible for federal student aid either. However, parents should inquire at the college where the student is planning to go to find out if they have any other type of scholarship or financial assistance available if not eligible for federal or state funded aid.

FAFSA is a FREE process and parents should be aware of private websites that charge a fee for filling out the forms.  To prepare the form electronically parents should go first to www.pin.ed.gov and obtain a PIN (Personal Identification Number) for the parent and one for the student. The official website for FAFSA is www.fafsa.ed.gov

It is recommended to prepare, along with an electronic file, a physical file with copies of all documents used for preparing the FAFSA form and keep it on a safe place. The file should include the PIN information and the printout of the form submitted. It is likely all that data will be used repeatedly when the process is done again every year the child stays in college, for the renewal of any financial aid received.

There is not such a thing as being ‘too rich’ or ‘too poor’ to apply for financial aid. The range of funds awarded will be determined based on the tax information from the previous year and early submission of FAFSA can be done with an estimate and adjusted later once the actual taxes has been filed. With the current cost of college education every little bit helps!

Students with athletic and academic qualifications may also be eligible to receive additional merit-based financial assistance from other sources. It is very important that seniors and their parents are on top of the deadlines for those scholarships and grants applications, because they are in no way related to the filling out of FAFSA and generally require the student to write essays or provide additional documents that back the merits the student has for receiving those awards.

Always keep in touch with the College Assistance Program (CAP) counselor of your child’s High School and check the school website for additional information regarding application deadlines and requirements.

College education in the USA can be funded from many sources. Parents should not get discouraged by the prices of tuition and other expenses. Being on top of colleges, scholarships, loans and grants applications requirements and deadlines can make the dream of getting your child into a good college or university a reality. You brought them to this great country to blossom and succeed. Your diligence can make it happen!

Checklist of documents needed for filling out FAFSA:

1. Personal data: name, date of birth, address, etc.
2. Parent’s and Student’s Social Security number
3. Student’s driver’s license number
4. Alien Registration Number if not a U.S. citizen
5. Federal tax information or tax returns including IRS W-2 information, for the student, and for parents:
6. IRS 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ
7. Foreign tax return and/or Tax return for Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Marshall Islands, the Federal States of Micronesia, or Palau
8. Records of untaxed income, such as child support received, interest income, and veterans’ on education benefits.
9. Information on cash; savings and checking account balances; investments, including stocks and bonds and real estate but not including the home.  Business assets of parents of dependent student.

FAFSA in a NUTSHELL

–        Only US Citizens, Permanent Residents or eligible non-residents can apply

–        Obtain a PIN for the student and one for the parent on www.pin.ed.gov

–        FAFSA can be filled out for free in English or Spanish at www.fafsa.ed.gov

–        Can be done early with an estimate of last year taxes and adjusted later

–        Application period started January 1^st. Form has to be filled out every year the child is in college.

–        Application for other public or private aids, grants and scholarships is independent from FAFSA. Deadlines and requirements should be checked on an individual basis. Contact your CAP counselor.

El primer paso para obtener ayudas financieras para la universidad.

Es tiempo de llenar el FAFSA.

Una buena educación es el activo principal que los padres pueden legar a sus hijos. Es parte del Sueño Americano de muchos inmigrantes que han trabajado muy duro para obtener su estatus legal y progresar en este país. Sin embargo, el sueño de una buena educación universitaria no es posible sin los fondos para sufragarla y quienes no se informan bien pueden estar perdiendo muchas oportunidades de recibir ayuda financiera para la educación de sus hijos.

El primer paso para ser elegible a obtener muchas ayudas financieras es llenar el FAFSA.

FAFSA significa “Free Application for Federal Student Aid” (Aplicación gratuita para ayudas estudiantiles federales, por sus siglas en Inglés). El proceso de preparación de la aplicación puede realizarse tanto en español como en inglés.

Los padres de todos los estudiantes en el último año de secundaria llenan esta aplicación desde el 1 de Enero de cada año, pues las universidades la utilizan para calcular las ofertas de ayuda financiera adicional en forma de becas, premios y préstamos que incluyen en sus cartas de admisión.

Llenar FAFSA no es obligatorio ni tiene una fecha límite, pero es muy importante hacerlo lo antes posible cuando los estudiantes están interesados en recibir cualquier tipo de ayuda financiera del gobierno para pagar sus estudios. Esto se debe a que los fondos de  las partidas de ayuda financiera estatal y federal de las universidades son limitadas y se otorgan  por ‘orden de llegada’ hasta agotarse.

Adicionalmente, el Estado de Florida determina la elegibilidad para algunos de los Programas de Asistencia Financiera de Florida (FFA) utilizando la información de FAFSA y los estudiantes que se encuentran en ya en la universidad con financiamiento público deben renovar su aplicación anualmente para asegurar la continuidad en la recepción de su asignación. 

Solamente pueden aplicar a ayuda financiera federal los estudiantes que tengan un número de Seguro Social válido, es decir ciudadanos estadounidenses, residentes permanentes u otros no-residentes elegibles. Las ayudas financieras federales no están disponibles para estudiantes indocumentados o en situación de ilegalidad. Aquellos estudiantes con visa de estudiante F1 o F2, visa de intercambio J1 o J2 o visa serie G (dependiente de organizaciones internacionales) tampoco son elegibles a las ayudas federales.

En cualquier caso, los padres deben consultar a la universidad donde el estudiante piensa asistir para determinar el tipo de ayuda financiera que estas pudieran tener disponibles para quienes no califiquen para ayudas estatales o federales.

Llenar la aplicación de FAFSA es un proceso GRATUITO pero existen sitios web privados que cobran por realizarlo. Para preparar la forma de manera electrónica es necesario primero obtener un PIN (Número de identificación Personal) para el estudiante y su representante en www.pin.ed.gov. Luego con ese PIN se procede a llenar la forma FAFSA en el sitio oficial www.fafsa.ed.gov

Se recomienda conservar un archivo electrónico y también una copia física de todos los documentos utilizados para preparar FAFSA y guardarlo en un lugar seguro. Este archivo debe incluir la información del PIN y también un impreso de la forma FAFSA una vez enviada. Es muy probable que toda esa información tenga que ser utilizada todos los años que el estudiante permanezca en la universidad, mientras sea necesario renovar las ayudas financieras que le hayan sido otorgadas.

Nadie es a priori  ‘demasiado rico’ o ‘demasiado pobre’ para aplicar y recibir ayudas financieras. El rango de los fondos otorgados se determinará en función de la declaración de impuestos del año anterior. La preparación temprana de FAFSA puede hacerse con un estimado de los impuestos y luego ajustarla una vez que la declaración sea enviada.

Los estudiantes que tienen méritos académicos y atléticos pueden llegar a ser elegibles a asistencia financiera de otras fuentes en base a estos logros. Es muy importante que estén pendientes de las fechas de aplicación y documentos adicionales necesarios para aplicar a estas ayudas, puesto que no se encuentran relacionadas con el hecho de haber preparado FAFSA.

Mantenerse en contacto con el CAP Counselor (Consejero del Programa de Asistencia a la Universidad) y consultar el sitio web de las escuelas de sus hijos le permitirá estar al tanto oportunamente sobre las fechas límite y requerimientos para aplicar a las universidades, becas, premios y otras oportunidades disponibles.

La educación universitaria en EEUU puede ser financiada de muchas maneras. Los padres, lejos de descorazonarse al ver los precios de la matrícula y otros gastos, deben apersonarse y estar pendientes de las fechas de aplicación para que realicen su sueño de ver a sus hijos en una buena universidad. Usted los trajo a este gran país para que florezcan y prosperen. Su compromiso y acción lo pueden hacer posible.

 

Lista de documentos para llenar FAFSA:

1. Datos personales.
2. Número de Seguro Social del Padre y el Estudiante.
3. Numero de licencia de conducir del Estudiante
4. Si no es Ciudadano Americano : Numero de Registro de Extranjero (AIN)
5. Información fiscal del padre y el estudiante, formas IRS W-2 , IRS 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ
6. Información fiscal o declaración de impuesto de Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, Marshall Islands, Federal States of Micronesia o Palau si aplica.
7. Registros de ingresos no imponibles como manutención de menores, intereses o beneficios educativos para veteranos.
8. Información sobre efectivo: balance de cuenta de ahorro y corriente; inversiones, acciones, bonos, inmuebles diferentes del hogar. Activos de negocio de los padres 

FAFSA en Síntesis:

–        Solamente aplica para ciudadanos estadounidenses, residentes permanentes y otros no-residentes elegibles.

–        Obtener un PIN para el estudiante y otro para el padre en www.pin.ed.gov

–        FAFSA es un proceso GRATUITO y puede llenarse en inglés o español en www.fafsa.ed.gov

–        Puede prepararse con un estimado de los impuestos y ajustarse luego de enviar la declaración definitiva

–        El proceso de aplicación comenzó el 1 de Enero. La forma debe llenarse anualmente.

–        La aplicación para otras ayudas financieras públicas o privadas es independiente de FAFSA. Fechas límite y requerimientos deben chequearse de manera individual. Contacte su CAP Counselor.
