For many of us who arrive to this country, or more specifically to this city, we can initially feel somehow lost, and in order to adjust smoothly we need to have information. This is even more so if we have children; we want the best for them. A classic question that comes up is: In which daycare or school should I place my son or daughter? What is a public school vs. a charter* school? Is it worthwhile to pay a private school? Which schools are there in this area? And moreover, in which conservatory do I put my son in? Where can my child receive tennis lessons or attend soccer practice? What pediatrician is there close by? Most of the time we obtain this information through word of mouth, in other words by reference, we ask a friend or an acquaintance his or her opinion on a given center or service. Likewise, we can find in local publications a great number of advertisements; nevertheless up until now there had not been one place where all this information was presented in an objective and condensed form so we would be able to make the best decision without using up time or energy.
The Solution: a Website
Thanks to the initiative of two mothers of our city, Martha Briceño and Erika Hunter, there is already a website in place that provides this help and offers necessary tips so we can carry out all this research. Martha and Erika are two professionals that come from Venezuela, both of them have not been living here for long and when they arrived with their children (of different ages) they felt frustrated when looking for information regarding their children’s education or any another aspect concerning them.
Martha tells us, “When we moved to this city, we lived the experience of seeking better alternatives of education and recreation for our children, in other words we tried to obtain valuable information that could be useful in our decision-making process. When I was in search of a suitable preschool for my son, who was two at the time, I felt I needed to have information of all the institutions of the city, and I was not able to obtain it easily. I literally knocked on every preschool’s door in order to see them with my own eyes. For a mother is very important to feel comfortable with the place where their child will spend a long part of the day. By carrying out these visits and witnessing personally all the possible facilities, I learned about the existing options, the different categories, the benefits of each one in order to compare”. In view of this experience and taking into account the professional know-how of both entrepreneurs, the initiative for this much-needed website took place. The idea is to provide residents and parents of this city (not only those that have recently arrived but also the more “knowledgeable” ones), objective information in order to make the best choice that will benefit any given family.
Erika explains, “The site www.doralkidsideas.com represents an innovative window full of information all in one place, where the user can instantly access in an easy way the facts they need. With one single click, any person may obtain accurate and detailed information about schools, sports centers, art academies, tutorials, language classes and a wide network of services, such as school supplies, clothing, transportation and more. The portal is Doral’s first and only web site with the most complete guide about the educational options, sports, recreation and other services designed to meet the information needs of parents living in our community”.
User Acceptance
Regardless of being in its initiation phase the acceptance to the portal has been very positive. In less than two months of its launch, the comments from the users both directly and via the web page, or through the calls they have received to request information and meetings with potential advertisers, besides web statistics are some of the indicators that reaffirm the positive reception that this idea has had. Plans
There are exciting plans: in the short term, the goal is to position themselves as the only online directory in which parents will find a wide range of products and services for their children. Cuando llegamos a este país, o más específicamente a esta ciudad, nos sentimos algo perdidos, y para poder tener una buena adaptación se requiere tener información. Más aun si tenemos hijos; queremos lo mejor para ellos, y para los padres la inquietud de que podamos ofrecerles esto es innegable. Una pregunta frecuente que surge es: ¿En cuál pre-escolar o colegio coloco a mi hijo o hija? ¿Qué es una escuela pública vs una chárter*? ¿Valdrá la pena pagar un colegio privado? ¿Cuáles escuelas hay en la zona? Y luego vienen las otras interrogantes. ¿En cuál academia de música meto a mi hijo? ¿Dónde puede recibir clases de tenis o practicar el fútbol? ¿Qué pediatra hay por esta zona? La mayoría de las veces esta información la conseguimos cuando se corre la voz, es decir por referencia, le preguntamos a algún amigo o conocido que nos dé su opinión sobre cierto centro o servicio. Igualmente, vemos en diversas publicaciones locales un sinfín de anuncios publicitarios, sin embargo no existe un sitio donde podamos obtener toda esta información de forma condensada y objetiva para nuestro fácil manejo y así poder tomar la decisión más conveniente ahorrando así tiempo y energía.
La solución: un portal
Gracias a la iniciativa de dos madres de esta ciudad, Martha Briceño y Erika Montero, ya existe un portal que da asistencia a la hora de realizar estas exploraciones. Tanto Martha como Erika, dos profesionales procedentes de Venezuela, llevan relativamente poco tiempo en nuestra ciudad y al llegar con hijos (de distintas edades) se sintieron frustradas a la hora de tomar decisiones relevantes sobre la educación o cualquier otro aspecto pertinente a ellos. Martha nos comenta, “Al mudarnos a esta ciudad, vivimos la experiencia de buscar las mejores alternativas de educación y esparcimiento para nuestros hijos, para así contar con información valiosa y determinante que sirviera en el proceso de toma de decisiones. Buscando preescolar para mi hijo, que en ese momento tenía dos años, sentí la necesidad de contar con información sobre todas las instituciones de la zona, y al no conseguirla, llegué a la puerta de, creo casi todos, sólo por la necesidad de “verlos” aunque sea su fachada. Para una mamá es muy importante conocer el lugar donde su hijo estará, quizás, la mayor parte del día. Por medio de ese recorrido presencial, descubrí las opciones existentes, las distintas categorías, los beneficios de cada uno y así pude comparar”. En vista de esta vivencia y tomando en cuenta la experiencia profesional de ambas empresarias, fue cómo surgió la iniciativa de tan necesitado portal. La idea es facilitarle a los residentes y padres de esta ciudad, ya sean recién llegados o “expertos”, información objetiva para poder tomar la decisión más acertada que convenga a una familia en particular.
Erika explica, “El sitio www.doralkidsideas.com representa una innovadora ventana de información completa y en un solo lugar, donde el usuario puede acceder de manera inmediata y fácil a la información que necesite. A pesar de estar en su fase de iniciación la aceptación al portal ha sido muy positiva.
