As Primary Election Day August 26^th approaches, it is time to reflect on the importance of registering as voters and the power and influence of involved residents

The right to vote is the essence of democracy, “the rule of the people”. It is what differentiates a free society from one where tyranny and oppression undermine the rights of their citizens.

Societies where individuals voluntarily refrain of exercising their right to vote eventually end up suffering the consequences of their indolent citizens; there are plenty of examples in Latin American countries where citizens did not vote on elections to end up being governed by a system they would not have chosen. That is why citizen’s participation is fundamental for the success and thriving of a community.

In Doral, there are 18,718 registered voters to this date, representing an increment of 10% over the electoral universe that selected the current City Council in 2012; In a population of 50,213 that means a mere 37% of those that live in Doral have the power to choose who is going to be in charge of deciding how the City is run and how their taxes are invested. It is a huge responsibility; each vote is worth the opinion of 2.5 residents.

Doral is a city where many are still navigating the complicated waters of the American Immigration System and have yet to obtain the coveted naturalization certificate, gaining with it the full rights and duties of American Citizens, the greatest of which is the right to vote.

However, even if a Doral resident is not vested to vote, can still support a candidate of their preference with their time or treasure, and also can voice their opinions on City Council meetings or by becoming member of many other organizations and civic opportunities that come up, where those that truly care about the wellbeing of their community are always welcome to participate.

Other very important way a non-voting resident can help is by being aware and informed of the decisions that will take place in the upcoming elections and prompting their neighbors and friends who are American Citizens to register and exercise their right to vote.

Moreover, in case of American born or naturalized children who just turned 18, it is very important to emphasize to them their right to register as electors, even if they are moving out of Florida for college, because no matter if they are attending school in other places, Doral is still their legal residence and they have the right and duty to voice their opinion. In case they are not in the city at the time of the elections they have to request and send an absentee ballot to make their vote count.

Upcoming elections and impact in Doral

On August 26^th there will be Primary elections and the ballot will include the Charter Amendments for the City of Doral.  Therefore it is fundamental that Doral residents get informed and participate massively on this process, to ensure that the main rules of government for the city continue reflecting the values and vision of all residents.

It does not matter whether you can or cannot vote. Get informed of the Charter amendments proposed¹, understand them and discuss them with your friends and neighbors who will cast a ballot.

Several partisan and non-partisan State and County wide offices will be voted on the primary, none of them affecting Doral.

There have been changes on the locations of precincts for the Primary election, therefore it is important to verify that information before August 26^th on the Departments of Elections website http://www.miamidade.gov/elections/regist-status.asp

Nonetheless, this is the best moment to register for voting or for updating the registration information. The deadline for that is July 28^th.  It can be done online, by picking up the registration form at the post office, public library or driver’s licenses office and sending it by mail or by visiting in person the Miami-Dade Elections Department, located in 2700 NW 87^th Avenue.  They are nearby. It is fast and easy. No excuses!

Registering for voting in the State of Florida

Last day for registering for the Primary Election is July 28^th

1. Only U.S. citizens (born or naturalized) 18 years or older can vote.
2. Provide Florida driver’s license number or last four digits of SSN on the application
3. If you decide to become member of a political party it can be done at the moment of registration. Otherwise you will be registered as non-partisan and will not be able to vote for candidates on partisan offices during Primary elections, although you can still vote on any other non-partisan issue on the ballot, for example on the City of Doral Charter Amendments
4. Fill in the registration form, mail it or bring it to the Elections Department
5. Early voting starts on August 11^th. Last day to request absentee ballots ins August 20^th

Votar: Un derecho y un deber 

Las elecciones primarias tendrán lugar el 26 de Agosto. Es el momento de reflexionar en la importancia del voto y el poder e influencia de los residentes.

El derecho al voto es la esencia de la democracia, “el poder del pueblo”. Es lo que marca la diferencia entre las sociedades libres y aquellas donde la opresión y la tiranía vulneran los derechos de sus ciudadanos.

Cuando los individuos se abstienen voluntariamente de ejercer su derecho al voto, terminan sufriendo las consecuencias de su indolencia ciudadana. Hay incontables ejemplos en América Latina donde la constante abstención electoral terminó llevando a los países a sistemas con los cuales los ciudadanos no estaban de acuerdo. Al no votar pusieron en manos de otros el derecho a decidir el destino de todos. Por ello la participación ciudadana es fundamental para el éxito y progreso de las comunidades.

En Doral hay 18,718 votantes registrados a la fecha. Esto representa un incremento del 10% sobre el universo electoral que decidió sobre los representantes al Concejo Municipal en 2012. Dentro de una población de 50,213 habitantes, esto significa que apenas el 37% de quienes viven en Doral tienen el poder de decidir quiénes estarán a cargo de decidir cómo se funciona la ciudad y qué hacer con los impuestos de todos. Es una gran responsabilidad; cada voto vale por la opinión de 2.5 residentes.

Doral es una ciudad donde muchos están todavía navegando las complejas aguas del Sistema de Inmigración y aún no han obtenido el ansiado Certificado de Naturalización y con él, los derechos y deberes de los Ciudadanos Americanos, de los cuales el mayor de todos es el derecho al voto.

Sin embargo, si una persona que vive en Doral aun no puede votar, todavía puede apoyar a los candidatos de su preferencia aportando su tiempo o fondos para las campañas, o puede expresar sus opiniones públicamente en las sesiones del Concejo o haciéndose miembro de las múltiples organizaciones cívicas existentes, donde  todos aquellos que realmente desean el bienestar de la comunidad son siempre bienvenidos a participar.

Otra manera cómo un residente de Doral no-votante puede participar es informándose de las decisiones que serán sometidas a votación en las elecciones, para comentar sus puntos de vista con sus vecinos y amigos que si son Ciudadanos Americanos, además de estimularles para que se inscriban y ejerzan su derecho al voto.

Más aun, aquellos que tienen hijos nacidos en los EEUU o que se han naturalizado y ya cumplen los 18 años deben sin demora enfatizarles la importancia de registrarse como votantes, sobre todo si van a mudarse de Doral para ir a la Universidad. Los estudiantes universitarios siguen siendo legalmente  residentes de su ciudad de origen, aunque estudien en otro estado.  Por lo tanto, tienen el derecho y el deber de expresar su opinión a través del voto. Y si no estarán en Doral para el momento de las elecciones deben solicitar una boleta de voto ausente para que su voto sea tomado en cuenta.

Próximas elecciones y su impacto en Doral

Las elecciones primarias del 26 de Agosto incluirán en la boleta las enmiendas a la Carta Constitutiva de la Ciudad de Doral ¹. Por lo tanto es fundamental que los residentes de Doral se informen y participen masivamente en el proceso, para asegurarse que las reglas básicas de gobierno de la ciudad continúen reflejando los valores y visión de todos los ciudadanos.

No importa que usted pueda o no votar. Las enmiendas propuestas a la Carta Constitutiva impactan a todos por igual. Es importante que las revise, comprenda y discuta con sus vecinos y amigos que si pueden ejercer su derecho.

Ha habido cambios en la ubicación de los precintos de votación para las Primarias; es muy importante que verifique la información antes del 26 de Agosto en el website del Departamento de Elecciones http://www.miamidade.gov/elections/regist-status.asp

Este es el mejor momento para inscribirse en el registro si aún no lo ha hecho o para actualizar su información si es necesario. La fecha tope para esto es el 28 de Julio. Puede hacerlo en la web o recogiendo la planilla de inscripción en las oficinas de correo, bibliotecas públicas u oficinas de licencias de conducir, enviarla por correo o llevarla directamente al Departamento de Elecciones de Miami-Dade, ubicado en el 2700 NW 87 Avenida. Están cerca, ¡no hay excusa!

¿Cómo inscribirse como votante en Florida?

 Ultimo día de inscripción antes de las primarias 28 de Julio

1. Solamente pueden votar ciudadanos Estadounidenses (por nacimiento o naturalización) mayores de 18 años
2. Deben tener licencia de conducir de Florida o indicar en la planilla los 4 últimos dígitos del SSN
3. Aun cuando se inscriba sin afiliación a partido político SI PUEDE votar en Primarias por otros asuntos , como es el caso de las Enmiendas a la Carta Constitutiva de Doral
4. Llene la planilla de registro y envíela o entréguela personalmente en el Departamento de Elecciones
5. Votación temprana comienza el 11 de Agosto. Ultimo día para solicitar boletas de voto ausente 20 de Agosto.
