What’s the purpose of an Associate’s Degree?

When students consider college plans, they are typically planning to college in order to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. A bachelor’s degree represents a collegiate level of education earned after approximately 4 years or 120 credits. The degree can be a Bachelor of Arts or Science. The difference is based on the type and number of courses taken that are more akin to liberal arts or the sciences. After the bachelor’s degree, a student may continue to earn their master’s or perhaps doctorate degree. However, a student can earn an associate’s Degree which is “lower” than a bachelor’s degree too. If the most sought after goal is a bachelor’s, what’s the point of an associate’s Degree?
An associate’s Degree is the primary level of college education that is earned after approximately 2 years or 60 credits. There are specific junior colleges where a student can earn this degree, but most likely they will earn the degree at a community college. An associate’s degree can help the student land several entry level jobs and earn a salary that will be higher than the employee who only has a high school diploma. However, the field is limited as most students will seek employment after having earned their bachelor’s degree. Because the bachelor’s degree is considered a higher degree (a student with more education and expertise), the bachelor’s student will have more earning potential and better job prospects.
High school students should understand that not everyone is meant to complete a four year college degree. Students need to consider exactly what they want to study, what career they want to pursue, and if they are ready to spend four years studying a specific subject. If the student isn’t sure what they want to study – if their career does not require a bachelor’s degree – or if they are not a good student academically, then consider the associate’s degree. Perhaps the student wants to earn a bachelor’s degree, but doesn’t feel ready yet. I’ve had students that are simply not ready to leave home and family or recognize that they are not mature enough to manage college. An associate’s degree at a nearby college could be the answer because they can use those credits towards their bachelor’s degree.
Students may enroll for an associate’s degree because they DO intend to earn a bachelor’s degree, but they want to save some money the first two years of college. Students can attend, for example, Miami Dade College, earn their associate’s degree at tuition rate much lower than private universities while living at home and then transfer. A public college such as Miami Dade has agreements with state colleges and universities so that students who complete an associate’s degree can then transfer and start in their junior (3rd) year. As long as the rules are followed, students can move all their credits and in two more years graduate with their bachelor’s degree. For those students who choose to transfer to a college upstate, out of state, or private- the savings in tuition can be substantial. If you choose to take this route, the most important thing is to understand exactly what the articulation agreement is between your associate’s degree college and the college you want to transfer to so you know exactly what to do in order to not lose credits.
There are also students who are in high school that choose to earn their associate’s degree before they graduate. These programs are known as dual enrollment. Sometimes students only pick up a few college credits in a dual enrollment program, but it is possible to graduate at the end of high school with both a high school diploma AND associate’s degree. Completing such a program can be challenging. Requirements to enroll in a dual enrollment program are difficult because the course load is demanding. Students who can complete both degrees are very attractive to colleges and universities because they have proven themselves as hard working students. Yes, obtaining both degrees at the same time does help college admissions.
One of the best options for students in Miami-Dade who have the potential to do complete both degrees simultaneously is the School of Advanced Studies (SAS). SAS is a joint effort between Miami Dade College and Miami Dade County Public Schools. It is a public high school at Miami Dade College whereby the student completes their last two years of high school and graduates with both a high school diploma and associate’s Degree. The curriculum is demanding, but the program is tuition free. Many graduates are being admitted to top colleges around the country including some Ivy League schools. The program is offered at various Miami Dade College Campuses including the West Campus here in Doral.
The associate’s degree is a college degree that should be considered by each student, but is not for every student. A college education has innumerable benefits, but the right fit exists for each student and parents need to work with their child to determine what the best path in their particular situation. The associate’s degree is just a different tool or avenue that is available and should be taken into serious consideration.

La diferencia se basa en el tipo y la cantidad de cursos tomados que se asemejan más a las artes liberales o las ciencias. Después de la licenciatura, un estudiante puede continuar obteniendo su título de maestría o quizás doctorado. Sin embargo, un estudiante puede obtener un título de asociado que es “más bajo” que un título de licenciatura también. Si el objetivo más buscado es un título de licenciatura, ¿cuál es el objetivo de un título de asociado?

Quizás el estudiante quiera obtener una licenciatura, pero aún no se siente preparado. He tenido estudiantes que simplemente no están listos para dejar el hogar y la familia o reconocer que no son lo suficientemente maduros para la universidad. Un título de asociado en un college cercano podría ser la respuesta porque pueden usar esos créditos para su licenciatura.
