Youngsters and Photography: Sharing Their Lives Through Pics.

Not every youngster is art inclined, at least not in the strict fine arts sense, but most of them love to take photos. There seems to be no place left where a photo is not highly necessary. Social networks like Instagram are the result of this photo frenzy. Taking pictures is the thing to do if you want others to know what you are up to or share any detail of your youthful social and family life. Your profile picture on Facebook presents you to the world out there and your cover photo says what you are interested on.
Photography has been around for quite some time but the current access to it is unparalleled. Not only has the access increased, but also it’s uses. Our teens and pre teens resort to picture taking in the most varied situations. It is almost a reflex reaction. I was surprised when I realized that for several years now my daughter uses her phone to photograph the board in her class once the teacher has finished writing. She complements her school notes with these pictures. Of course she also takes pictures of the possible outfits she will wear on the weekend get together and asks for her friends advise through texting.
Many pre teens and teens have asked us to help them better their photos. They realize there are so many photos you can post of your friends in the mirror doing a “v” sign and pursing their lips in a kiss fashion. What else can they do? How can our youth learn to use the power of photography to create more compelling images that will transmit the messages they intend to? What other uses can they make of photography besides those in social media?
At The Art Shack we have been working with young photographers for some time but feel the need for advise and learning opportunities has expanded. Our Young Photographers 101 course starting on 4/9/13 includes not only technical knowledge, but also all the necessary composition and storytelling tips a young photographer needs to make their pictures talk. Whether they are using a cell phone camera or a DSLR, learning how to use the language of photography makes all the difference in the outcome. Let’s take portraits, for example: changing the point of view when photographing a friend or family member may help capture the attitude better. Or maybe you can say something about someone by just photographing their shadow or capturing them with their favorite object or pet.

Los Jóvenes y la Fotografía: compartiendo su vida en imágenes

No a todos los jóvenes les atrae el arte, o por lo menos no las clásicas artes plásticas, pero a la mayoría de ellos les apasiona tomar fotografías. Parece no haber lugar donde una foto no sea esencial. Las redes sociales como Instagram son el resultado de esta fiebre de la fotografía. Es la manera como se comparten los detalles de las vidas sociales y familiares de los jóvenes. Tu foto del perfil en Facebook te presenta al mundo y la foto de portada dice que te interesa.
Si bien la fotografía existe hace muchos años, el acceso a ella no tiene paralelo en la historia. También sus usos se han diversificado exponencialmente. Nuestros adolescentes y preadolescentes toman fotos por las razones mas diversas. Es casi una reacción refleja. Me sorprendí cuando me enteré que hace ya varios años mi hija usa su celular para fotografiar lo escrito por la profesora en el pizarrón. Estas imágenes complementan sus notas de clase. Desde ya también toma fotos de los modelos de ropa que puede llegar a usar para la reunión del fin de semana y pide la opinión de sus amigas por mensaje de texto.
Muchos adolescentes y preadolescentes nos preguntan como mejorar sus fotos.
Se dan cuenta que ya han excedido la cuota de fotos de sus amigas en el espejo haciendo la señal de la “v” y poniendo los labios en posición de beso. Que otras opciones hay? Como puede nuestra juventud aprender a usar el poder de la fotografía para crear imágenes mas persuasivas que transmitan el mensaje que desean? Que otros usos pueden dar a la fotografía además de los de los medios sociales?
En “The Art Shack” ya hace tiempo que trabajamos con jóvenes fotógrafos, pero sentimos que la necesidad de consejos y oportunidades de aprendizaje se ha ampliado. Nuestro curso de Fotografía para Jóvenes 101 que comienza el 9 de Abril, no solo incluye los conocimientos técnicos, sino también los de composición y reportaje necesarios para que el joven fotógrafo logre que sus fotos hablen. Ya sea que se esté utilizando un celular o una cámara SLR digital, aprender a utilizar el lenguaje de la fotografía garantiza mejores resultados. Tomemos como ejemplo los retratos: cambiar el ángulo o punto de vista cuando tomamos una foto de un amigo o familiar puede contribuir a captar mejor su actitud. O inclusive podemos decir algo del sujeto fotografiando únicamente su sombra o capturándolo con su objeto preferido o mascota.
