Zenaida Vilar: Full-time volunteer work.

There are many dedicated volunteers daily contributing their time and talents in all schools and especially at Ronald W.Reagan/Doral Senior High School, but the overall experience of Zenaida Vilar, who has been active as a volunteer during all stages of her daughters’ school life, from Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center, through Doral Middle School and now RRDSHS, constitutes an invaluable asset to the Parents, Teachers and Students Association (PTSA) she will preside during the 2012-2013 school year; it is a timely and well deserved selection.

The Vilar family, consisting of Zenaida, Enrique and their daughters Gabriela and Andrea, has been living in Doral for 11 years. They have seen schools grow and thrive along with the entire community. They love being of service to their community, because, as Zenaida expressed: “There is a poem by Venezuelan Andres Eloy Blanco that says ‘when you have a child, you have all the children in the world’ and that’s true. My husband and I have always thought that home and school go hand in hand together and that is what leads us to spend time volunteering at school for our daughters. If the school is good, your community is good. If your community is well, your children are safe. “

The PTSA Board, greater commitment and responsibilities

In their native Venezuela, Zenaida and Enrique used to donate volunteer time to their daughters’ preschool. When they moved to the US,  where volunteering is a value for the country and society, they began to participate as room parents, field trip chaperones, event logistic support and contacts with the community to ensure grants, donations and funds for school activities until, when her youngest daughter was in 5th. Grade, Zenaida formalized her volunteer commitment to donate even more time to school, by accepting the nomination to join the EBT PTSA Board as vice president in charge of fundraising.

The main difference between a regular volunteer, a regular member of the PTSA and volunteers who agree to participate as part of the Board is that, as Zenaida explains, “you get a more formal commitment to the whole school. You are still a volunteer, but with more work and responsibilities, you are subject to audits and have to closely follow procedures of the organization. As a volunteer member often your only contribution is almost anonymous while participating in the PTSA Board makes your name a reference, what you do is more visible. It is a big commitment and responsibility.

 “In the 2011-2012 school year, Zenaida Vilar not only served as VP in charge of the volunteers on the Board of RRDSH-PTSA. Simultaneously, she was part of Doral Middle School PTSA, even when her two daughters had already graduated from that school. “Unfortunately there is not a new generation of parent volunteers at the school to assume the commitment to work the Doral Middle School PTSA and one ends up feeling as the school is part of your extended family after that many years volunteering there. DMS has a special place in my heart . So I made the decision to continue working there willingly. I wanted to continue supporting a school that is excellent. “

How to become a school volunteer?

In her personal experience, Zenaida found that volunteers willing to work in schools should not fear for not knowing how to speak English or being foreign and being newcomers. “You have to approach the teachers from the beginning, through the channels they indicate. They need the support of parents. You have to anticipate their needs, support them. Be humble and helpful; be attentive to the needs of others. Also those already volunteering in schools must be humble and receptive, open to recruit and motivate new coming people, wanting to learn how to work and guide them. That will motivate more people to feel comfortable to participate and help.“  This is extremely important for those newcomers to the city, trying to get involved into the system.

Volunteering for the Miami-Dade Public Schools System requires following a registration procedure that is common to all schools. Zenaida explains that to register as a volunteer, the person must go to the school office where she wants to donate their time as each one has some variants of the basic process that includes: “asking for a parent ID number at the school or on the website of Dadeschools and fill in the form with personal data that will allow the School Board to do some research before issuing an approved Volunteer Number, so you can work in all schools where you register. To work with children having to pass all that security system is natural. Children safety is the most important concern.”

Currently, volunteers have access to many training opportunities that enable them to acquire knowledge that will make their work more effective. There are several volunteer levels from the basic room parent or field trip chaperone, up to a level 3 certification, to accompany overnight field trips, which requires attending several workshops and requires a fingerprint background check. “Now people do not have the excuse that no one has explained the procedures. Everything is available. They send you emails with the necessary information. The process will educate you to be an effective and efficient volunteer “.  It is enough to have the desire and commitment, follow the rules and be attentive to the needs of teachers to be a good volunteer; there is often voluntary work that can be done from home or after office hours and is an invaluable aid to the entire school.

About Ronald W.Reagan / Doral Senior High School

Next school year it will be 4 years Zenaida Vilar has been volunteering at Reagan Senior High, and she affirms that “it is a safe school, with many activities; the children are respected as individuals while receiving an excellent education. They are happy, is a very healthy environment. I say this not as a member of the PTSA, but as an objective mother who is aware of what their children do and say. These kids know when there are some who use drugs, as happens in other schools. And many of those children who use drugs have brought this problem with them from those other schools. The school police who is always in campus monitoring security, and the school administration, when they detect this problem, it is handled the right way according to the school Code of Conduct, confidentiality and respect due to minors who may be involved “

“RRDSH is a big family, like a small town where everybody knows what is going on. If there is something that happens all the kids talk about it. They are sensitive to the needs of others, are sympathetic and care for each other. They are appreciated and loved. I have never heard the kids discuss about someone being harassed by others. It is a school where rules are enforced and sympathy, tolerance and respect are instilled as values.  At Reagan, kids care and protect each other.”

 “Priorities: provide all resources for our students and bring the community together”

Last school year, the RRDSH PTSA objective was to support the national recognition of the school and to increase community participation. Both objectives were achieved successfully. During her tenure as RRDSH PTSA President, Zenaida Vilar wishes to support the school achievements.” I want to raise more funds to cover the technological needs and educational field trips. We want to provide as an organization so that our children’s school do not lack of anything, none of the students. And that all teachers have all the resources. With so many budget cuts at the nation and state that somehow end up affecting the budgets for education, the parent community should contribute more, seeking support from businesses and private companies to cover all the needs that our schools may have. “

“I want all the Doral families involved within our school and aware of its needs. I want them to learn to love it, to be informed about the realities and participate in events that take place here. We need more Volunteer support. I want to encourage families recently arrived to the city to get to know the school. I want to encourage volunteers from other schools to attend the activities at Reagan to the get to know each other, to prepare the next generation of leaders, who really appreciate and value our public schools. We will communicate to the community our calendar of activities so that everyone in Doral can participate. It is a matter of neighbors, community, city, word of mouth. It is the responsibility of all to care and love our public school and keep it as excellent as it is today. Its future depends on all who come after us.”

“We know that in the City of Doral there are drug problems in certain sectors. It’s a small problem, not a problem of the schools but of the whole community. Our contribution as an organization will be to continue to educate the population with the workshops we provide to prevent and eradicate this and other problems. We will continue inviting the public using all means possible, including flyers distributed at the door of the school. We will continue to invite the community to come and participate. These educational events are very important. “

People like Zenaida Vilar, with love and dedication to service, with desire to build our city and our community, are the people that Doral wants and needs. That love and commitment from parents to their public schools in Doral is essential to ensure that all public schools maintain their current excellent quality.

Zenaida Vilar:  Trabajo voluntario a tiempo completo

Hay muchos voluntarios comprometidos diariamente con aportar su tiempo y talentos en todas las escuelas de Doral y especialmente en Ronald W.Reagan/Doral  Senior High School, pero la experiencia integral de Zenaida Vilar, quien ha trabajado activamente como voluntaria durante todas las etapas escolares de sus hijas desde Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center, Doral Middle School y ahora en RRDSHS, constituye un activo valiosísimo para la Asociación de Padres, Maestros y Estudiantes (PTSA) que presidirá durante el año escolar 2012-2013. Una selección merecida y oportuna.

La familia Vilar constituida por Zenaida, Enrique y sus hijas Gabriela y Andrea, viven en Doral hace 11 años. Han visto crecer las escuelas y con ellas la comunidad entera. Aman el trabajo voluntario y comunitario, porque como bien lo expresa Zenaida: “hay un poema del venezolano Andrés Eloy Blanco que dice ‘cuando se tiene un hijo, tienes todos los niños de la tierra’ y eso es cierto. Mi esposo y yo siempre hemos pensado que hogar y escuela van de la mano juntos y eso es lo que nos lleva a compartir el tiempo como voluntarios en la escuela de nuestras hijas.  Si la escuela esta bien, tu comunidad esta bien. Si tu comunidad esta bien, tus hijos están seguros.”

En la Junta del PTSA, mayor compromiso y responsabilidades

Desde su país natal, Venezuela, ya Zenaida y Enrique donaban tiempo de trabajo voluntario al pre-escolar de sus hijas. Al llegar aquí, donde ser voluntario es un valor para el país y la sociedad, inmediatamente comenzaron a participar como padres de soporte en aula, chaperones de paseos, apoyo logístico en eventos y contacto con empresarios de la ciudad para conseguir donaciones y fondos para las escuelas hasta que, cuando su hija menor estaba en 5to. Grado, Zenaida formalizó el compromiso de donar aún mas tiempo a la escuela, al aceptar la nominación para formar parte de la Junta Directiva del PTSA en EBT como vicepresidente de recaudación de fondos.

La principal diferencia entre un voluntario regular, un miembro regular del PTSA y los voluntarios que aceptan participar como parte de la Junta Directiva es que, como Zenaida explica, “adquieres un compromiso más formal con todo el colegio. Sigues siendo voluntario, pero con más trabajo y responsabilidades, te ves sometido a auditorias, a los procedimientos de la organización. Como miembro voluntario solamente muchas veces  tu aporte es hasta anónimo, mientras que al participar en la Junta del  PTSA tu nombre es referencia, lo que haces está mas a la vista. Es un gran compromiso y responsabilidad”.

En el año escolar 2011-2012, Zenaida Vilar no solamente participó como VP encargada de los voluntarios en la Junta del RRDSH-PTSA. Simultáneamente formó parte del PTSA de Doral Middle School, aun cuando ya sus dos hijas egresaron de esa escuela. “Lamentablemente no hay una generación de relevo de padres voluntarios en esa escuela que asumiera el compromiso de trabajar el PTSA de Doral Middle School y uno cuando es voluntario termina queriendo el colegio como parte de tu familia extendida; DMS tiene un lugar especial en mi corazón. Así que  tome la decisión de continuar trabajando allí también voluntariamente. Me quedé para continuar apoyando una escuela que es excelente”.

¿Cómo me hago voluntario?

En su experiencia personal, Zenaida encontró que los voluntarios para colaborar en las escuelas no deben temer hacerlo por no dominar el inglés o por ser extranjeros y estar recién llegados. “Tienes que acercarte a los maestros desde el principio por los canales que ellos establezcan. Ellos necesitan el apoyo de los padres. Tienes que anticipar sus necesidades, apoyarles.  Ser humilde y servicial, estar atento a las necesidades del otro para ayudarle. Igualmente quienes están ya dentro trabajando como voluntarios en las escuelas, deben ser humildes y receptivos, abrirse a incorporar y motivar a la gente nueva que viene con deseo de aprender a trabajar y orientarlos sobre como hacerlo. Eso va a motivar mas gente a que se sienta cómoda para participar y ayudar”. Esto es sumamente importante para quienes recién llegan a la ciudad y se incorporan al sistema. Trabajar como voluntario en el sistema escolar requiere seguir un procedimiento de registro que es común a todas las escuelas.

Zenaida explica que para registrarse como voluntario hay que acudir a la oficina de la escuela donde la persona quiera donar su tiempo pues cada una tiene algunas variantes del proceso básico que incluye: “pedir el numero de identificación como padre en la escuela o en el website de Dadeschools y llenar la planilla con los datos personales que permitirán a la Junta Escolar (School Board) hacer una investigación antes de emitir un  código de voluntario aprobado para que puedas trabajar en las escuelas donde te registres. Para poder trabajar con niños hay que pasar todo ese sistema de seguridad, es muy lógico. Lo mas importante es la seguridad de los niños”

Actualmente, los voluntarios tienen acceso a muchos adiestramientos que les permiten adquirir conocimientos para hacer más efectivo su trabajo. Hay varios niveles de voluntario, desde el básico para ser padre de aula o chaperón de paseos, hasta la certificación nivel 3, que exige pasar varios cursos y chequeo de huellas digitales, para poder acompañar paseos con pernocta. “Ya las personas no tienen la excusa de que nadie les explico los procedimientos. Todo está disponible. Te envían los emails con la información necesaria. Los procesos te los explican y te educan para que apoyes a la escuela con la mayor efectividad.”  Solo basta tener el deseo, el compromiso, seguir las reglas y estar atento a las necesidades de los maestros; muchas veces hay trabajo voluntario que puede hacerse desde la casa o fuera del horario laboral y es una ayuda invaluable para la escuela entera.

 Sobre Ronald W.Reagan/Doral Senior High School

 El próximo año escolar Zenaida Vilar cumplirá 4 años trabajando como voluntaria dentro de la Secundaria Ronald Reagan y comenta que “es una escuela con mucha seguridad, con muchas actividades, los muchachos son respetados como individuos a la vez que reciben una excelente educación. Son felices, es un ambiente muy sano.  Y  lo digo no como miembro del PTSA, sino como madre objetiva que esta pendiente de lo que hacen y dicen sus hijas. Los mismos muchachos saben que hay algunos que consumen drogas, igual que sucede en otros colegios.  Y muchos de esos niños que usan drogas han venido ya con ese problema de esos otros colegios. La policía escolar que siempre está dentro monitoreando la seguridad y la administración de la escuela, cuando detectan ese problema lo manejan de la manera correcta según el Código de Conducta escolar, con la confidencialidad y respeto que corresponde a los menores que pudieran estar involucrados”

“La comunidad de RRDSH es una gran familia, ahí todo se sabe, es un pequeño pueblo.  Si hay algo que sucede los muchachos lo comentan todo y son sensibles a las necesidades de los demás; son solidarios y unidos. Se aprecian y se quieren. Jamás he escuchado a los muchachos comentar casos de acoso. En otra escuela que no reforzara la sensibilidad, la tolerancia, el respeto y la solidaridad, muchos muchachos podrían llegar a sentirse relegados. En Reagan no es así.  Las autoridades están pendientes de reforzar las reglas, pero también los muchachos se cuidan y se protegen los unos a los otros”.

Prioridades: Que no le falte nada a nuestros estudiantes y unir a la comunidad

El año escolar pasado, el objetivo del  RRDSH PTSA fue apoyar el reconocimiento a nivel nacional de la escuela e incrementar la participación comunitaria. Ambos objetivos fueron logrados con creces. Durante su futura gestión como Presidente del PTSA de Reagan, Zenaida Vilar desea apoyar a que la escuela  “continúe siendo un buen colegio. Quiero recaudar más fondos para cubrir las necesidades tanto tecnológicas como de paseos de extensión educativa.  Que podamos proveer como organización para que en la escuela de nuestros hijos no falte absolutamente nada, a ninguno de los estudiantes. Y que los maestros tengan todos los recursos. Con tantos recortes presupuestarios a nivel nacional y estatal que terminan de algún modo afectando los presupuestos para educación, la comunidad de padres debe aportar más, buscando apoyo de los negocios y empresas privadas para cubrir todas las necesidades que nuestras escuelas puedan tener”.

“Quiero que todas las familias de Doral se involucren y conozcan desde adentro a nuestra escuela y aprendan a quererla; que estén informados sobre las realidades y participen en los eventos que allí se realicen. Que apoyen como voluntarios.  En mi gestión quiero incentivar a que las familias de la ciudad se integren a participar en la escuela. Quiero motivar a los voluntarios de las otras escuelas a asistir a las actividades de Reagan para que la vayan conociendo, para preparar la generación de relevo, que realmente aprecie y valore nuestras escuelas públicas.  Vamos a comunicar a la comunidad la agenda de las actividades para que todo Doral pueda participar. Es un asunto de vecinos, de comunidad, de ciudad, de boca en boca. Es responsabilidad de todos cuidar y querer nuestra escuela y mantenerla excelente como es actualmente. Depende de todos los que vienen más atrás de nosotros”

“Se sabe que en la Ciudad de Doral hay problemas de droga en ciertos sectores. Es un problema pequeño, pero existe, no es un problema de las escuelas sino general de la sociedad, de toda la comunidad. Nuestro aporte como organización será continuar educando a la población con las charlas que proporcionamos para prevenir y erradicar ese y otros problemas. Los seguiremos invitando por todos los medios posibles, incluyendo panfletos repartidos en la puerta de la escuela. Vamos a continuar invitando a toda la comunidad para que venga y participe. Son eventos educativos muy importantes.”

Personas como Zenaida Vilar, con cariño y vocación de servicio, con deseo de construir comunidad y ciudad,  son las personas que Doral necesita. Ese cariño y compromiso de los padres hacia sus escuelas públicas de Doral es fundamental para garantizar que estas mantengan su calidad actual.
