J.C. BERMUDEZ: “WE NEED TO LISTEN TO OUR NEIGHBORS”
The Mayor of the City of Doral participates in the neighborhood meetings of different communities
His most recent participation was at Windward at Islands at Doral, where representatives from the City of Doral, exchanged ideas with neighbors and community leaders.

With the phrase, “We need to listen to our neighbors”, the Mayor of the City of Doral defined the visits that he has been conducting with the different community associations in our city, with the main purpose to establish a direct line between the residents and the city authorities.
“Participating in these type of meetings, with the members of our communities, not only allows us to know the people that live there and conduct their daily activities in the city, but it also allow us to create a productive relationship in order to understand the real needs of each community association,” explains Mayor Bermudez.
Mayor Bermudez explains that this type of community visits was implemented successfully during his first term. “At that time, we were able to get closer to the residents in order to assist them with their concerns, to answer their questions and to inform them about what we were doing at our local government.”
This was the reason for which the City of Doral decided to restart this type of meetings with the neighbors, these are characterized by the exchange of opinions and the different proposals for the solution of the problems that are described in the meetings. “No one knows better the needs of a community than its own members, for this reason it is so important for us to listen to what they have to say to us.”
The most recent HOA meeting in which Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez participated took place in Windward at Islands at Doral this past Tuesday, February 27th, 2018. There, City of Doral representatives exchanged ideas with neighbors and community leaders. The next Condo meeting is scheduled for March 22nd, 2018 at Las Vistas at Doral.
Additional to these formal meetings with HOAs and Condos, Mayor Bermudez constantly visits those communities that contact his office to express specific issues that require attention. The Mayor also receives the neighbors that visit his office at City Hall.
LEARNING FROM THE COMMUNITIES
For Juan Carlos Bermudez, one of the main goals for these meetings is learning. “The reality is that we are the ones that learn the most from these meetings, we learn from the members of the community, when we discuss with the Presidents of the associations or with the Property Managers, we realize that many of them have problems that they want to solve but they also have solutions.”
“Usually, depending on the community that we are visiting, we gather specific information about their needs. With this we know which staff we need to invite to participate with me to properly address the concerns of our residents”, comments the Mayor of Doral.
The most common concerns from our neighbors are geared towards safety, surveillance, street construction and maintenance. For this reason, it is frequent that Mayor Bermudez attends these meetings with the City Manager, Mr. Edward Rojas and with staff from the police department, public works and planning and zoning.
An important component for the dynamic of these meetings is to follow up on the issues presented. “There are times in which we do not have an immediate answer, for this reason we take note of the issue in order to review it, search for a solution and bring back an answer to the communities. It is important that all the residents of Doral feel that their voices are heard and are taken care of.”
Bermudez added that when he was elected Mayor again, one of his priorities was to finalize pending projects such as Doral Legacy Park and the new Doral Police Station and he completed them because these were some of the main requests from the community. “Now we have to keep on sharing with the residents in order to be always alert of their needs and requirements.”
Sharing is the main word around these meetings, given that, according to Mayor Bermudez, when they meet with the neighbors, they get to know them and get their contact information, this allows the city to follow up on the issues that were discussed. “The reality is that the participation in the neighborhood associations is just the first step in a City Hall-community relationship that should solidify with time if we want things to work properly.”
These neighborhood meetings also have an informative aspect, because in some cases the solution to the neighborhood requests does not depend from the City of Doral but instead from Miami Dade County or some other institution. “In these cases, we guide the people explaining them who should they contact, how and what is the correct process to conduct requests or applications.”
In these meetings, the residents also learn. “There are neighbors that do not know all the services that the City of Doral offers, the different alternatives that we have to solve the problems or even the mobile applications that we have in order to stay in touch and have a permanent contact with our neighbors.
“We take advantage of these neighborhood meetings to explain the people about multiple aspects of the way in which the city works and with this we not only listen to them but we also get them to listen to us, which is the true value of working together for the common good.”

El más reciente encuentro se produjo en Windward en Islands at Doral, donde los representantes de la Ciudad de Doral intercambiaron ideas con vecinos y líderes comunitarios

“Hay que escuchar a los vecinos”, con esta frase el alcalde de Doral definió los encuentros que viene sosteniendo con las diferentes asociaciones de nuestra ciudad con el propósito de establecer un enlace directo entre los residentes y las autoridades municipales.
“Participar en este tipo de reuniones con los miembros de nuestras comunidades no sólo nos permite conocer a quienes residen y hacen vida en la ciudad, si no que nos hace crear un acercamiento productivo par entender las verdaderas necesidades de cada asociación de vecinos”, explica el alcalde Bermúdez.
Comenta el mandatario doralino que este tipo de encuentros comunitarios ya lo habían implementado con éxito durante su primera gestión. “En ese momento logramos acercarnos a la población para atender sus inquietudes, responder sus preguntas e informales a ellos sobre lo que nosotros estábamos haciendo al frente del gobierno local”.
Esta fue la razón por la cual la Ciudad de Doral decidió retomar estas reuniones con los vecinos, las cuales tienden a caracterizarse por el intercambio de opiniones y las propuestas para la solución de los problemas expresados durante los encuentros. “Nadie conoce más las necesidades de una comunidad que sus propios miembros, por eso es que, para nosotros, es muy importante escuchar lo que tienen que decirnos”.
La junta de vecinos más reciente en la que participó el alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez se realizó en la comunidad de Windward en Islands at Doral, el pasado martes 27 de febrero del 2018, donde los representantes de la Ciudad de Doral intercambiaron ideas con vecinos y líderes comunitarios. El próximo encuentro esta previsto para el 22 de marzo en el condominio Las Vistas at Doral.
Adicional a estos encuentros formales con las asociaciones de vecinos, el alcalde Bermúdez visita constantemente a las comunidades que se comunican con su oficina para plantear asuntos puntuales que necesitan atención. De igual forma, el mandatario mirandino atiende a los vecinos que se acercan a su despacho en la sede de nuestro ayuntamiento.
APRENDIENDO DE LAS COMUNIDADES
Para Juan Carlos Bermúdez uno de los aspectos más importantes de estas reuniones vecinales es el aprendizaje. “Realmente, somos nosotros quienes aprendemos de los miembros de las comunidades, pues al conversar con los presidentes de las asociaciones o con los administradores de los condominios nos damos cuenta de que muchos de ellos tienen no sólo problemas que aspiran solventar, sino también propuestas para buscar soluciones.”.
“Normalmente, dependiendo de la comunidad que vayamos a visitar, nos informamos previamente sobre sus necesidades puntuales para saber cuál personal de la Ciudad debe acompañarme para responder más efectivamente a las inquietudes de los residentes”, comenta el alcalde de Doral.
Lo más común es que las inquietudes vecinales estén orientadas a las áreas de seguridad y vigilancia y mantenimiento y construcción de calles, por lo que es frecuente que el alcalde Bermúdez acuda a estos encuentros vecinales acompañado por el administrador de la Ciudad de Doral, Edward Rojas y por personal de los departamentos de policía, obras públicas y zonificación y planificación.
Parte importante de la dinámica de estas reuniones es darle seguimiento. “Hay ocasiones en las cuales no tenemos una respuesta inmediata, por lo que tomamos nota del asunto para atenderlo, buscarle solución y traer una respuesta a las comunidades. Es importante que todos los residentes de Doral se sientan escuchados y atendidos”.
Bermúdez agregó que, cuando fue nombrado alcalde de nuevo, una de sus prioridades fue culminar proyectos pendientes como el Doral Legacy Park y la estación de la Policía de Doral y así lo hizo porque estas eran unas de las principales peticiones comunitarias. “Ahora tenemos que seguir compartiendo con los residentes para siempre estar al tanto de sus necesidades y requerimientos”.
Compartir es una palabra clave en el marco de estos encuentros, pues, manifiesta el alcalde Bermúdez, que al reunirse con los vecinos, logran también conocerlos y obtener su información de contacto para después hacerle seguimiento a los temas tratados. “Realmente, la participación en las asociaciones de vecinos es sólo el primer paso de una relación alcaldía-comunidad que debe mantenerse en el tiempo si queremos que las cosas funcionen correctamente”.
Estas reuniones vecinales también tienen un matiz informativo, pues en ocasiones las soluciones a las solicitudes vecinales no dependen de la Ciudad de Doral, sino del condado de Miami-Dade o cualquier otra institución. “En ese caso, nosotros guiamos a las personas explicándoles a quién deben contactar, por cuáles medios y cómo es el proceso adecuado para realizar solicitudes o aplicaciones”.
Pero en estas juntas vecinales los residentes también aprenden. “Hay personas que desconocen todos los servicios que presta la Ciudad de Doral, las alternativas que tenemos para solucionar sus problemas o incluso las aplicaciones móviles con las que contamos para mantenernos comunicados y en permanente contacto con nuestros vecinos.
“Nosotros, aprovechamos estas juntas vecinales para explicarles muchos aspectos del funcionamiento de la Ciudad de Doral y así logramos no sólo escucharnos a ellos, sino también que ellos nos escuchen a nosotros que es el verdadero valor del trabajo en conjunto por el bienestar común”.
