Military Housing Groundbreaking Ceremony took place at Doral
DORAL, FL – The future site of the new military housing complex supporting U.S. Southern Command service members and their families was celebrated in a groundbreaking ceremony at Doral.
The event took place on Monday morning, Jan. 30, at the U.S. Southern Command site located at 9301 NW 33rd St., where congressional and military leaders participated such as U.S. Army Gen. Laura Richardson, commander of U.S. Southern Command, U.S. Army Gen. Edward M. Daly, commander of U.S. Army Materiel Command, Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-26), Florida Lt. Governor Jeanette Nuñez, and City of Doral Mayor Christi Fraga, among other local leaders.
This will be the first military housing of its kind in South Florida since devastation caused by Hurricane Andrew resulted in the closure of military housing at Homestead Air Force Base more than three decades ago.
Due to this, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been working closely with the Army since 2020 to transfer up to 51.7 acres of FAA land to the Army for the much-needed housing construction project which will enhance U.S. Southern Command’s military readiness and service member quality of life.
In addition, this complex will address long-standing challenges with housing key and essential service members near the military command as well as the financial challenges service members face when living in high-cost metropolitan communities.
U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) is one of the twelve unified Combatant Commands of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). Its area of responsibility includes more than forty countries and territories and covers about sixteen million square miles.
This is a joint command comprised of military and civilian personnel representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Space Force, and other federal agencies. The area of responsibility and mission objectives of USSOUTHCOM have evolved over the time of its existence and that of its predecessor commands.
