MDC Waste-to Energy Facility to be the largest in the U.S., company says
DORAL, FL – Miami-Dade County Waste-to-Energy Facility, which site is still to be determined pending an announcement scheduled for Sept. 4, would be the largest of its kind ever built in the United States, according to AtkinsRéalis Group Inc.
The Quebec-based professional services and project management company has been awarded a professional services agreement (PSA) to provide professional and owners engineering services to the county’s department of Solid Waste Management for the plant that Doral residents don’t want to be seen inside city premises.
Capable of converting 4,000 tons of waste per day into electricity and alternative fuels, the project, estimated to cost $1.5 billion, will create the largest WTE facility in the United States, handling 50 percent more waste than the old Covanta plant, according to the preliminary designs unveiled by the company.
“Efficiently repurposing waste is a critical component of a successful transition to Net Zero,” said Ian L. Edwards, President and Chief Executive Officer of AtkinsRéalis in a press release.
Under a 10-year US$65 million contract, AtkinsRéalis will provide design criteria, consulting, advisory and environmental services prior to construction. The Company will also supervise construction and administer quality control support to Miami-Dade County, as per the press release.
“We have established a proven track record as Miami-Dade’s trusted owners’ representative on numerous engineering projects benefiting the community over the last 60 years,” said Steve Morriss, President, U.S., Latin America, and Minerals & Metals, AtkinsRéalis.
“We’re perfectly positioned to continue to support our long-standing client with the development of a green mixed-use industrial campus that creates renewable energy, while solving the County’s growing waste challenges and opening the door for similar U.S.-based projects in the future.”
AtkinsRéalis released renderings for the first time to the public, while also saying the Waste-to Energy Facility will be one of the newest ones in the country.
