Volunteers and their undeniable support for the community.

Writing about volunteers is basically writing about this country. Many things have been accomplished thanks to the selfless effort of thousands of people who gave up their time and work towards helping the community. Its impossible to imagine a hospital, library, event or cause that has succeeded without the help of volunteers. Tennis tournaments such as the one in Key Biscayne and golf tournaments such as the one in Doral are perfect examples of the level of productivity and pleasant results from the work of volunteers that benefit everyone. If we speak about schools, Doral boasts one of the largest forces of certified volunteers, the highest possible category given by the school system.

These “special” volunteers are constantly updating themselves through services from M-DCPS like the Certified School Volunteer Leadership Program.  They also attend conferences, take technical courses and specialize in several fields. They then go on to help out at local schools, benefiting the entire community. The latest certification was for CPR and many of those present were from Doral. We wanted to reach out to these generous individuals and see their opinions and paradoxically, most of them asked “why me?”. In reality, there are so many people that should be recognized for their work that we have to limit ourselves to a small initial sample, with the promise of continuing to interview the rest of those who keep playing a big role in the history of our city.

 As mother Teresa used to say, “love is Action”. I love my children and my Community. I truly believe that we cannot just sit down and wait for others to make a change for us; to just sit down and watch the parade without participating. All of us have to take part of this change for the better, to ensure a safer and more beautiful world for our children.

Children live by example, you can not expect them to care for their education, environment, and human values, and have social conscience if we do not practice what we preach; if do not show them the path and the sacrifice to give without expecting anything back

We learn solidarity, leadership, good interpersonal relationships, discipline, communication skills, and we also learn how to take care for our self and for others. Our children learn form us, they are watching every step we make; it is in our best interest to show them that we care, they will become better citizens, hence, better human beings.

I find difficult to talk about my community work, and myself but basically I feel that there are many needs that often are together and if we raise our voices we can get some answers.  A great reward is seeing that your work produces a multiplier effect.

I have been involved in schools and our greatest achievement has been to earn the trust and credibility of the authorities. Through so many years our work allow us to be more closely to the specific problems and we can help teachers providing solutions or helping to find them.

Over the years you realize that volunteering is a necessary part in the development of a community.

As for my final message to the Doral community is to invite to join us. We need your ideas and your help. You will gain an indescribable satisfaction; remember, “The Unity is the Strength.”

I get an incredible satisfaction with helping others in the community.  I enjoy working with other people and I think all these volunteer projects are a way to bring everyone together.  It’s awesome to see people come together to achieve a common goal that is good for others.

My most important achievement is raising my two children.  It is still a work in progress, but by far my most important responsibility and role.  It is important to me to be a volunteer because it gives me a great deal of satisfaction.  I am also setting an example for my children that helping others gives you a sense of worth, accomplishment and it brings you peace.  What better lesson could I teach my children than that?

I would like the residents of Doral to know that it is not overwhelming to volunteer.  I started out volunteering at my children’s school little by little.  I work full time and have always done so.  Therefore, it is very possible to pick an area you feel strongly about and volunteer.  It is even better if you can include your children in that.  It is a wonderful life lesson!

When you arrive in a new country you feel alone, everything is different and you need to learn the rules. Once you have this information and you feel settled, this new status motivates you to help others without receiving anything in return. For me, just giving an advice on time, a simple orientation and above all, to shake hands with people who needs you, it is priceless.

Volunteering is surrender body and soul to do a job without expecting anything in return, a simply thank you or a beautiful smile can fill my soul.  The most important thing to volunteer is to enjoy what you do, enjoy the moment to help, to collaborate… Whatever you’re doing, volunteering is a privilege; it’s more like a card once I got, “we don’t have a salary because our work is invaluable.”

There are many aspects that motivates to me to be a volunteer, but the one that motivates the most is being connected with people. My most important achievement is being a volunteer in a public school system.

Volunteering is being a responsible citizen and living in harmony with others towards common goals. My message to the Doral ‘s community is:  Be informed, get involved!!!

I like to work for my community because it is a way to give back to the place where my children are growing up.  I believe that teamwork and motivation are two key components to be able to be a good volunteer; and I feel lucky to have them both.

My biggest drive are my children and for them I have volunteered at Eugenia B. Thomas K – 8.  I feel fortunate not only because I have been able to help out in my children’s school, but furthermore because I have met an incredible group of women who are 100% committed to volunteering as well; and today I consider them to be my friends.  These two factors make volunteering not only a way that makes me feel useful in my community, but also a way to have fun!

Los voluntarios y su invaluable aporte  a la comunidad.

Muchas cosas fueron posible gracias al aporte desinteresado de miles de personas, que entregaron su tiempo y su trabajo con el objetivo de ayudar a su comunidad.  Es imposible imaginar una escuela, un hospital, una biblioteca, un evento, una causa, sin que salga adelante sin el apoyo de los voluntarios.

Torneos de tenis como el de Key Biscayne o el de Golf, y el Relay for Life en Doral son claros ejemplos de esta aseveración…  El nivel que alcanzan al ser inmensamente atractivos, revierte en un incremento de ingresos a la comunidad, beneficiada en todos los rubros.

Si hablamos de las escuelas, la ciudad de Doral es reconocida por ostentar un grupo significativo de voluntarios certificados; la mas alta categorización para el sistema.  Estos voluntarios “especiales” se actualizan continuamente a traves de los servicios que  ofrece el M-DCPS  en el Certified School Volunteer Leadership Program… Además acuden a conferencias, toman cursos técnicos  y se especializan en diversos rubros. Y luego aportan sus conocimientos a las escuelas de la ciudad, beneficiando a toda la comunidad.

La ultima certificación fue de CPR (resucitación cardiaca) y muchos asistentes eran del Doral. Quisimos conocer a estos generosos ciudadanos y tener sus opiniones, y paradójicamente la mayoría decía ¿Por qué yo?,…  la verdad son tantas las personas a quienes honrar, que nos limitamos a un grupo inicial, con la promesa de seguir entrevistando a los protagonistas de la historia de la ciudad.

Como la Madre Teresa solía decir: “el amor es acción”…  “Amo a mis hijos y a mi comunidad. Sinceramente, creo que no podemos simplemente sentarnos y esperar que los demás hagan un cambio. Todos nosotros tenemos que tomar parte de esto, asegurar un mundo más seguro y más agradable para nuestros hijos.

Los niños aprenden con el ejemplo, no se puede esperar que se encarguen solos  de su educación, medio ambiente, y los valores humanos, y  logren tienen conciencia social, si no practicamos lo que predicamos, y si no les mostramos  el camino y el sacrificio de dar sin esperar nada a cambio”.

“Como voluntarios aprendemos acerca de la solidaridad, el liderazgo, buenas relaciones interpersonales, la disciplina, habilidades de comunicación, y también aprendemos  a cuidar de nosotros mismos y de los demás. Nuestros niños aprenden de nosotros, ellos están observando cada paso que damos, si les demostramos que nos preocupamos, se convertirán en mejores ciudadanos, por lo tanto, mejores seres humanos”.

“Para empezar te cuento que ha sido muy difícil para mi dar una respuesta rápida a esta pregunta porque me cuesta mucho hablar de mí y de mi trabajo comunitario;  pero si, básicamente siento que son muchas las necesidades que muchas veces trabajando en equipo y alzando nuestras voces ante los problemas se consigue un aporte efectivo  y sobre todo al ver que con tu trabajo produces un efecto multiplicador”…  Donde yo más me he involucrado, es en las escuelas y nuestro mayor logro ha sido ganarnos la confianza y la credibilidad de las autoridades  donde a través de nuestro trabajo de tantos años  nos permiten llegar mas de cerca a los problemas puntuales de los niños y de los maestros  permitiéndonos  muchas veces aportar soluciones  o ayudar a la búsqueda de las mismas”.

“A través de los años uno comprende que el trabajo voluntario es parte necesaria en el desarrollo de una comunidad ya sea grande o pequeño el aporte que uno brinda para encontrar soluciones a sus problemas siempre creara un precedente para el futuro y nos permitirá crecer como personas”.

Como mensaje final para mi comunidad del Doral a la que tanto quiero porque tuve la oportunidad de ver crecer y convertirse en Ciudad los invito a unirse a nosotros porque no solo necesitamos sus ideas y cualquier aporte que ustedes deseen dar sino porque cada uno gana una satisfacción y un crecimiento como persona que es indescriptible, no en vano existe un dicho muy cierto que “ la unión hace la fuerza”.

“Es una satisfacción increíble el  ayudar a otros en la comunidad. Me gusta trabajar con personas y creo que todos estos proyectos de voluntariado son una manera de reunir a todos. Es impresionante ver como las personas se unen para lograr un objetivo común que es bueno para todos.

Mi logro más importante es criar a mis dos hijos. Es todavía un trabajo en progreso, pero por mucho, mi responsabilidad más importante y el papel.

También estoy dando un ejemplo para mis hijos, el ayudar a los demás le da un sentido de valor, realización y que le trae la paz. ¿Qué mejor lección que le puedo dar a mis hijos?

Me gustaría que los residentes de Doral sepan que no es abrumador ser voluntario. Empecé poco a poco como voluntaria en la escuela de mis hijos sin embargo, yo trabajo a tiempo completo y siempre  lo he hecho. Por lo tanto, he debido de organizar mi tiempo para esta actividad. Es aún mejor si usted puede incluir a sus hijos en eso. Es una lección de vida maravillosa!”

“Hay muchos aspectos que me  motivan el ser  voluntaria, pero el que mas me importa es el contacto  con la gente. Mi logro más importante es ser voluntario en un sistema escolar público.

Ser voluntariado, es ser un ciudadano responsable y vivir en armonía con los demás hacia objetivos comunes. Mi mensaje a la comunidad del Doral  es la siguiente: Infórmense y participen !! “

“Te motiva ser un voluntario cuando llegas a un país donde te sientes solo, donde las costumbres cambian, donde sientes que tienes que salir adelante sin conocer bien las normas del juego, pero una vez que te empapas de todo esto que escaseas, te motiva para ayudar a los demás sin recibir nada a cambio, simplemente dar un consejo a tiempo, una simple orientación y sobre todo dar la mano a la gente que mas  lo necesite no tiene precio…   Ser voluntario es entregarte en alma y cuerpo hacer un trabajo sin esperar recibir absolutamente nada a cambio, solo el agradeciendo y en pocas oportunidades una hermosa sonrisa que en mi caso muy particular  me llenan el alma.

Los logros son infinitos, … la mayoría de las veces uno le cambia la vida a una persona con solo ayudarlo en algo,  créanme que marcas la diferencia con solo darle una mano en el justo momento y la hora adecuada a un ser humano cuando mas lo necesita.  Lo más importante de ser voluntario es disfrutar lo que haces, disfrutar el momento de ayudar y colaborar”.

“Me gusta trabajar por mi comunidad, porque es una manera de retribuir todo lo que han hecho por mis hijos. Creo que el trabajo en equipo y la motivación son dos elementos clave para poder ser un buen voluntario, y me siento afortunada de tener a los dos.  Mi mayor logro son mis hijos y por ellos me he ofrecido como voluntaria en Eugenia B. Thomas K – 8. Me siento afortunada, no sólo porque he sido capaz de ayudar en la escuela de mis hijos, pero además porque me he encontrado un grupo increíble de mujeres que están 100% comprometidos con el voluntariado y las considero mis amigas. Estos dos factores hacen que el voluntariado no es sólo una manera que me hace sentirme útil en mi comunidad, pero también una manera de divertirme!”
