Ready, Set, Go, Let our Schools begin!

There are 104 days of summer vacation and school comes around just to end it…. these are the lyrics of a popular cartoon that airs on TV, very in tune with our reality because we are now approaching the final stage of the summer when our children have to start getting prepared for another year of educational learning and growth.

During these days, before August 20th, parents and children are getting ready to go back to school.  Checklists include: uniforms, school supplies, finalizing summer readings or assignments, trying to get back into routine, deciding which extracurricular activities the children will participate in this year….trying to make the most of these last “restful” days. 

But parents and kids are not the only ones that are getting into a back to school mode.  School administrators, most of whom have hardly taken any time off, have been working hard to ensure a smooth start… organizing schedules, assigning classes, reviewing budgets, coordinating and checking that when the teachers and students return, the school is ready for them!

The performance of our schools in Doral this past school year were very good, once again they all obtained a qualification of “A”.  This is the result of continuous teamwork between students, teachers, administrators and parents

The schools in Doral (both public and charter) provide not only fundamental academic preparation but additionally they offer programs and courses that enhance our students’ learning experience.   Ana Cordal, principal of Renaissance Charter School (RECS) explains, “Our academic programs are of the utmost priority at Renaissance Elementary and Renaissance Middle Schools.  We plan on incorporating “blended learning” through virtual school at the middle school level.  This will allow for our students to have more options when selecting elective courses”.

At  Ronald Reagan Senior High School (RRSHS) they have added classes in their Cambridge and Advanced Placement programs to provide our student with challenging college level courses to enhance their academic experience.  Many of their new classes are also integrating global and environmental topics in their studies.  They also have in place Industry Certification, Honors Level Arts and Performing Arts, SAT/ACT and College Readiness Courses to assist students at all levels to strive for excellence.”  

Doral Middle School will continue to offer an array of electives. Agriscience, drama, family and consumer services (sewing, tourism, culinary) are just some of the initiatives to mention.  In addition they are planning a spring fieldtrip to Europe where students will learn about London, Paris and Rome.  At Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center (DRE), Reva Vangates, the principal tells us that she feels fortunate to be able to provide her students a state-of-the-art building with smart boards and computers in every classroom.  Studies confirm that technology used in education yields a broad array of meaningful results. They will continue to utilize technology to enhance teaching and promote learning.

Doral Academy Middle School’s Technology program obtained the highest qualification of all the state, and this year they will work hard to maintain this success.  Academy’s principal, Douglas Rodriguez, is extremely proud of these results and mentions, “One of our goals for this school year is to increase the number of students in our advanced courses, as well as continue to expand our specialized technological curriculum with programs like: future city and robotics”.  Doral Academy High School has plans to increase the dual enrollment for students to be able to take college courses from Miami-Dade College, FIU and Doral College. 

Community Interaction

Doral schools are very active within our community, and this involvement helps the student population have a sense of belonging and awareness of their surroundings.  DRE’s principal, Mr. Vangates explains, “The quality of the connection between school and community influences our students’ learning.  We strive to strengthen our relationship with the community by collaborating with public and/or private groups.  We will continue to implement programs such as the Amazing Panthers which is sponsored by the Doral Family Journal to highlight our students’ academic achievements and success each nine week period.”

Marie Caceres, the principal from DMS, reassures that they will continue to host the Miami Music project as well as the Doral United Soccer Club, in addition to the Boy Scouts; all these programs are open to students of the community.

’s (JIS) PTA works very closely with Relay for Life with the intermediate students as well as Dade partners.  Each grade level identifies a charity to sponsor at the school site which includes donating goods or supplies to various organizations.

Another example of community involvement is RECS participation in a school-wide “Book Drive” in which they donate hundreds of new books to a needing school in Downtown Miami.   RECS will continue to work on similar projects this upcoming school year.   RRSHS is also looking to expand community relationships and is working with the Doral Rotary Club to initiate an Interact Club.

Doral Academy High School, together with the City of Doral, has started working on an Entrepreneurial Program designed to offer 11^th and 12^th graders internships within the city as well as with local business through the Doral Business Council.  Another initiative that Doral Academy wishes to explore is to approach RRSHS to share resources that ultimately benefit all students to work towards college scholarships.

Challenges

As expected there are challenges and working towards overcoming them makes all this success even more rewarding.  Gwendolyn Hines the principal from John I. Smith K-8 Center (JIS) explains that the school is in its second year of expansion to include a grade level, and as a consequence they will share a hybrid site with DMS and RRSHS.  JIS will be on the first floor, DMS on the second and RRSHS on the third.  Everyone is confident that this arrangement will work, and Caceres from DMS, wants her students to feel proud that they are sharing their building with other schools.   

At RRSHS, one of the greatest challenges is to push the students in all areas to do better than the graduating class prior to them.  Jacques Bentolila, Ronald Reagan’s principal explains, “We constantly review what we have done and how we can make it better.  As with any other high school we also assist our students and families with issues that come with adolescents and look to provide them avenues to navigate through adolescents and into adulthood”.

Douglas Rodriguez from Doral Academy states that one of their biggest challenges is to help the 6^th graders and 9^th graders adjust to the school environment.  “It is a big transition period for these students and we want to introduce them to this change in a comfortable manner where they will feel secure and nurtured.” 

A safe environment for all students is vital and all schools provide continuous supervision on campus.  DMS’s principal Ms. Caceres adds, “I don’t foresee any grave issues; the students were here last year and already know our rules and expectations.”

All of the schools work closely with the City of Doral Police Department.  They help prepare the students for any challenges they may face through the drug prevention Program “DARE” (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). They also get support from the State Attorney General’s Office with the Anti Cyberbullying Program. 

Welcome Back

The expectations this year for all the schools are high.   Ana Cordal RECS explains, “I look forward to working with our staff, students, and families in order to provide an environment that will enable students to reach their highest potential in Academics, Citizenship and Life Skills”. 

A new school-year comes together with new projects and new ideas, all in favor of improving the educational experience of our children not only academically but as integral beings that are preparing for a challenging future.  At DRE K-8 Center the students are provided with an exceptional educational program for all learners through the implementation of curriculum standards, instructional guidelines, and research based best practices. Not only do they instill academic excellence in our students, but also build confident individuals of strong character who will positively impact the world. Their focus is on nurturing self-confidence and risk-taking skills so that students become enthusiastic life-long learners.

Now that the summer break is over, we feel confident that with the leaders we have in our schools, Doral students will continue to strive and be successful.  JIS’s theme for this year is “Leading by Example”, as they are steering their course to expand 7^th grade. 

We wish all of our school population the best of luck for this new academic year and hope that the teamwork between teachers, parents, administrators and students continues to be the formula of academic success in order to make this another reason to feel grateful to live in this city.

Preparados, Listos, que comiencen las clases!

Ya el verano está llegando a su fin, y esta es la época en que nuestros hijos deben prepararse para comenzar otro año de crecimiento y desarrollo educativo.

Es durante estos días, antes del 20 de agosto, cuando padres e hijos, deben tener todo listo para el retorno al colegio.  Las listas incluyen: comprar los uniformes y útiles escolares, terminar las tareas o lecturas asignadas, prepararse para volver a la rutina, decidir en cuáles actividades extracurriculares participarán los niños este año…aprovechar al máximo estos últimos días de “descanso”.

Pero padres e hijos no son los únicos que se están poniendo en sintonía con el regreso a clases.  Los directores y administradores de las escuelas, quienes casi no han descansado en el verano, han estado trabajando arduamente para garantizar un comienzo escolar sin contratiempos…organizando itinerarios, realizando la programación de clases, revisando presupuestos, coordinando para que cuando regresen los estudiantes y maestros al colegio, todo esté listo para recibirlos.

 El desempeño de nuestras escuelas en Doral el curso pasado fue muy buena ya que todas obtuvieron una calificación de A.  Este éxito es el resultado de un trabajo en equipo entre estudiantes, maestros, administradores y padres.

Las escuelas en Doral (tanto públicas como chárter) proveen no sólo la preparación académica necesaria,  sino adicionalmente ofrecen programas y cursos que mejoran la experiencia educativa de los estudiantes.  Ana Cordal, directora de la Escuela Renaissance (RECS) explica, “Nuestros programas académicos son nuestra prioridad tanto en la escuela primaria como en la intermedia.  Tenemos planificado incorporar un “aprendizaje fusionado” virtualmente en la escuela intermedia.  Esto permitirá que nuestros estudiantes tengan más opciones cuando seleccionen una electiva”.

En la escuela secundaria Ronald Reagan (RRSHS) han agregado clases en su programas Avanzados y de Cambridge para ofrecerle al estudiante cursos de nivel universitario que permitan enriquecer la experiencia educativa.  Muchas de las clases están integrando tópicos globales y ambientales.  También tienen Certificaciones Industriales, Arte y Drama de nivel Avanzado, y cursos de preparación para la universidad que ayuden al alumno a buscar la excelencia. 

La escuela intermedia Doral Middle School va a continuar ofreciendo un sin número de electivas. Agriciencias, drama, servicios especiales (costura, turismo y artes culinarias) son sólo algunas de las iniciativas.  Adicionalmente están preparando un viaje para Europa en la primavera donde los estudiantes aprenderán y visitarán Londres, Paris y Roma.  

Por su parte, la directora del Centro K-8 Dr. Rolando Espinosa (DRE), Reva Vangates dice que ella se siente afortunada de poder suministrarle a sus estudiantes un edificio con instalaciones de alta tecnología con pizarras electrónicas y computadoras en cada aula.  Estudios han confirmado que la tecnología ligada en la educación arroja resultados positivos y es por esto que continuarán utilizándola para mejorar la enseñanza y promover el aprendizaje.

El programa de tecnología de la escuela intermedia Doral Academy obtuvo la calificación más alta en todo el estado y este año escolar que comienza van a trabajar para mantener este éxito.  El director de esta escuela, Douglas Rodríguez se siente sumamente orgulloso de estos resultados y dice: “Una de nuestras metas este año es incrementar el número de estudiantes que participan en estos programas avanzados, así como expandir aún mas nuestro programa de tecnología con iniciativas como ciudad futura y robótica.”  Doral Academy igualmente planea incrementar el número de inscripciones en paralelo para que estudiantes puedan tomar cursos en el Miami Dade College, FIU y Doral College.

Interacción con la Comunidad

Las escuelas en Doral son muy activas dentro de la comunidad y este involucramiento permite que la población estudiantil tenga un sentido de pertenencia y conciencia de sus alrededores.  Vangates del DRE explica, “La calidad de la conexión entre la escuela y la comunidad influye en el aprendizaje de nuestros estudiantes.  Buscamos fortalecer nuestra relación con la comunidad colaborando con grupos públicos y privados.  Continuaremos implementando programas como las ‘”panteras asombrosas” el cual es patrocinado por el Doral Family Journal para resaltar los éxitos académicos de nuestros estudiantes.”

Marie Cáceres, la directora del DMS, asegura que van a continuar apoyando al Miami Music Project y al Doral United Soccer Club, así como los Boy Scouts.  Todos estos programas se ofrecen para niños de nuestra comunidad.  La Asociación de Padres y Representantes del Centro K-8  John I. Smith (JIS)  trabaja muy estrechamente con Relay for Life con los estudiantes intermedios y los Socios del Condado Dade (Dade Partners).  Cada grado selecciona una caridad para patrocinar y esto incluye donar bienes y provisiones a diversas organizaciones.

Otro ejemplo de involucramiento con la comunidad es la participación de RECS en una iniciativa a nivel de toda la escuela para realizar donaciones de libros nuevos a escuelas necesitadas en el centro de Miami.   RECS continuará con proyectos como este.   RRSHS está buscando expandir relaciones comunitarias y está trabajando con el Rotary de Doral para iniciar un Club Interactivo.

La escuela secundaria Doral Academy, junto con la ciudad de Doral, ha comenzado a trabajar en un programa de empresario independiente diseñado para ofrecerle a los estudiantes de 11o y 12o grado pasantías con la ciudad y otros negocios locales a través del Doral Business Council.  Otra iniciativa que Doral Academy desea explorar es trabajar con la escuela secundaria Ronald Reagan para compartir recursos que a la final beneficien a todos los estudiantes que desean trabajar para conseguir becas universitarias.

Retos

Como es de esperarse existen retos, y trabajar para sobrellevarlos hace que el éxito sea aun más satisfactorio.  Gwendolyn Hines, directora de JIS explica que la escuela está en su segundo año de expansión para incluir otro grado y como consecuencia de este crecimiento deberán compartir el actual edificio del DMS.  En el primer piso estará JIS, en el segundo DMS y en el tercero RRSHS.  Todos confían que este arreglo va a funcionar, en especial Marie Cáceres del DMS que quiere que sus estudiantes se sientan orgullosos que están compartiendo el edificio con las otras dos escuelas.

En la escuela secundaria Ronald Reagan una de las mayores inquietudes es asegurar que cada año la clase que se está graduando lo haga mejor que la clase anterior.  Jacques Bentolila, el director de este centro explica, “Estamos revisando constantemente para mejorar cada vez más.  Como en cualquier escuela secundaria debemos asistir a nuestros estudiantes y a sus familias con las preocupaciones propias de la adolescencia y les suministramos las herramientas necesarias para que pasen positivamente a ser adultos responsables.”

Rodríguez, de Doral Academy, dice que su enfoque es ayudar a los estudiantes que están entrando tanto a la escuela intermedia (6o grado) como a la secundaria (9o grado) a adaptarse al ambiente escolar.  “Es un período de transición relevante y queremos introducirlos a este cambio de una forma cómoda para que se sientan seguros y atendidos.” 

Un ambiente seguro es vital para los estudiantes y todos los colegios proveen supervisión continua en sus instalaciones.  Cáceres de DMS dice, “no preveo ningún asunto grave; nuestros estudiantes estuvieron acá el año pasado y ya conocen nuestras reglas y expectativas.”

Todas las escuelas trabajan muy de cerca con la policía del Doral.  Ellos preparan a los estudiantes para enfrentar cualquier situación difícil a través del programa “DARE” (Educación para la Resistencia al consumo de Drogas) .  Igualmente obtienen ayuda de la oficina de la Fiscalía Estatal con el programa “Anti-intimidación cibernética.”    

Bienvenidos

Las expectativas de este año son bastante ambiciosas.  Ana Cordal de RECS explica, “Tengo muchos deseos de trabajar con mi personal, estudiantes y sus familias para garantizar un ambiente que le permita a los estudiantes alcanzar su máximo potencial tanto en el ámbito académico, de ciudadanía y destrezas de vida”. 

Un nuevo año viene junto a nuevos proyectos y nuevas ideas, todo a favor de mejorar la experiencia educativa de nuestros hijos no sólo en el plano académico pero como seres integrales que se preparan para un futuro mejor.  Por ejemplo, a los estudiantes de la escuela DRE se les provee una educación excepcional mediante la implementación de estándares curriculares, lineamientos instructivos e investigaciones basadas en prácticas exitosas.  Los estudiantes no sólo reciben excelencia académica sino que se construyen individuos que tengan confianza en sí mismos, que tengan fortaleza para dejar un impacto positivo en el mundo.  El enfoque es alimentar la confianza de los muchachos y darles herramientas para asumir riesgos y así estar siempre abiertos al aprendizaje.

Así que ya el verano se termina y nos sentimos confiados que con las guías que tenemos en nuestras escuelas, los estudiantes de Doral continuaran en el comino correcto hacia el éxito.  El lema de la escuela JIS es “Ser Líderes a través del Ejemplo”, ya que están navegando para expandirse con 7º grado.

Les deseamos a toda la población estudiantil mucha suerte en este año escolar que comienza, y esperamos que el trabajo en equipo entre maestros, padres, estudiantes y administradores de las escuelas sigan siendo la fórmula del éxito para hacer que nos sintamos orgullosos de poder educar a nuestros hijos y vivir en esta ciudad.
