    Every story has a beginning, and this one starts right here at our own Doral Park.  A few weeks back, the Broncos 90 lb. team hosted an inner city team for a game of youth football.  Right from the start, it was easy to see that this team needed help.  They didn’t have matching helmets or jerseys or even the proper equipment for that matter. A Doral team mom’s heart was moved, as in stark contrast, she cheered on her son’s team in their beautiful new uniforms that could put the NFL to shame.

     With a plan in her heart, she found out all she needed to know about this team called ‘Project Hope’. It’s an incredible non-for-profit organization that reaches deep into Liberty City to educate and minister these severely under privileged children. Project Hope mentors children for a variety of sports, but that is not the heart of the team. Founder and Pastor Anthony Dawkins partners with the University of Miami to have mandatory help classes after school to aid these children in focusing on education. They also partner with Barry University for a reading clinic that includes a character building curriculum, problem solving skills and takes a stand against crime and violence. The Barry University counselors personally go into the homes of these young athletes and offer free counseling. The parents attend monthly meetings and must volunteer hours to the school and the team.

     The team was formed out of a desire God placed on Pastor Dawkins’ heart. His focus is to make a difference in the lives of children who were recognized by the school board to be failing academically and involved in crime at a young age. Pastor Dawkins teaches the children weekly that God has a different plan for their lives and that they are uniquely gifted by Him and for Him. Through love and prayers, Pastor Dawkins is able to offer these kids Hope.

     After meeting with the Director to find out what the Doral Football Program could do to help, the news was handed down that they didn’t have the money to pay for the team to even travel to Doral. This was when Team Moms Vicky Garcia, Alejandra Albelo and Lupita Renato immediately began calling the City of Doral. They knew that our great city could make a difference. They called Vice Mayor Michael DiPietro and Councilman Cabrera, who explained that the city could not pay from the City’s funds, but they offered to find private funding.

     Following that conversation, Doral Parks Director Jesus Palacio sent a letter to each of the Bronco families, asking them to bring equipment and donations to support the visiting team. What followed was nothing short of a miracle. Not only did the team get the bus covered, the City of Doral poured out its love unto the kids from Project Hope. The Broncos’ parents brought cleats, jerseys, clothes, mouth pieces and chin straps.

Councilman Cabrera was there to present the Liberty City team with an abundance of equipment. Pastor Dawkins thanked all the families and the beautiful City of Doral for their generous and open hearts. He prayed, “Lord on this day, I thank you for the residents, team and families who have blessed us in a mighty way and answered prayers by lovingly reaching out to these children.” Everyone on the field shouted with joy, “Amen”.

     May this inspire you to look around at those who are in need and reach out to make a difference.

UNA HISTORIA DE ESPERANZA

Toda historia tiene un principio y esta comienza aquí mismo, en nuestro Parque del Doral. Algunas semanas atrás, los Broncos 90 lb., albergaron a un equipo interno de la ciudad para un juego de fútbol americano juvenil. Desde el mismo comienzo del juego, claramente se notó que este equipo necesitaba ayuda. No tenían cascos iguales, ni sudaderas, ni siquiera el equipo de protección adecuado para el caso. Esto conmovió el corazón de una madre del equipo del Doral, que en pleno contraste, vitoreaba al equipo de su hijo, luciendo flamantes nuevos uniformes que avergonzarían hasta a la NFL.

Con un plan en su corazón, averiguó todo lo que necesitaba saber acerca de este equipo llamado “Proyecto Esperanza.” El proyecto es una increíble organización sin fines de lucro que opera profundamente en la zona de Liberty City, llevando educación y ministerio a los niños poco privilegiados del área. Proyecto Esperanza apadrina a niños en un sinnúmero de deportes, pero este no es el centro del equipo. Su fundador, el Padre Anthony Dawkins se unió a la Universidad de Miami para sostener clases extra-curriculares obligatorias para ayudar a estos niños a enfocarse en su rendimiento académico. También se asociaron a la Universidad Barry para implementar una clínica de lectura que incluye un curriculum de fundamentación del carácter, habilidades para resolver problemas que además, se opone al crimen y la violencia. Los consejeros de la Universidad Barry acuden personalmente a los hogares de estos jóvenes atletas, para ofrecer sus servicios de manera gratuita. Los padres por su parte, acuden a reuniones mensuales y deben donar horas voluntarias a la escuela y el equipo.

El equipo fue formado por un deseo de Dios, sembrado en el corazón del Pastor Anthony Dawkins. El Pastor se enfocó en aquellos niños reconocidos por la directiva de la escuela como fallando en sus propósitos académicos e involucrados en actividades delictivas desde edades tempranas. El Pastor Dawkins enseña semanalmente a los niños que Dios tiene planes diferentes para con sus vidas y que por más, son únicos por Él y para Él. Haciendo uso del amor y sus oraciones, el Pastor Dawkins ha podido ofrecerles una Esperanza.

Después de reunirse con el Director para conocer lo que podría hacer al respecto el Programa de Football del Doral, se supo que estos no tenían siquiera el dinero para pagar por el transporte del equipo al Doral. Fue entonces que las madres Vicky García, Alejandra Albelo y Lupita Renato, comenzaron a llamar a la ciudad del Doral. Ellas sabían que nuestra gran ciudad podría hacer la diferencia. Llamaron al Vice-Alcalde Michael DiPietro y al Concejal Cabrera quien explicó que la ciudad no podía pagar usando los fondos de la misma, pero se ofrecieron a encontrar financiamiento privado.

Seguido a esta conversación, el Director de Parques del Doral, Jesús Palacios, envió una carta a las familias de los miembros del Bronco, pidiéndoles donaciones y equipos para ayudar al equipo visitante. Lo que siguió no fue menos que un milagro. No sólo se cubrieron los gastos de transporte, la Ciudad del Doral desbordó amor sobre estos muchachos del Proyecto Esperanza. Los padres de los Broncos llevaron cleats (zapatos especiales para el juego), sudaderas, ropa, protectores bucales, y retenes para cascos. El Concejal Cabrera estuvo allí para presentar a la tropa de Liberty City los obsequios y equipo abundante. El Pastor Dawkins agradeció a todas las familias y a la bella ciudad del Doral por su generosidad y gran corazón, y oró: “Señor, en este día te doy gracias por los residentes, el equipo y los familiares que nos han bendecido de tan grande manera, y contestaron a nuestras oraciones al acercarse amorosamente a estos niños.” Y todos en el campo repicaron con júbilo, “!Amen!”

Que esta historia sirva de inspiración y miren hacía aquellos necesitados a nuestro alrededor y se acerquen para hacer la diferencia.
