Big Lots to close more than 300 stores nationwide
DORAL, FL – Big Lots announced Wednesday its plans to close more than 300 stores nationwide with California set to be the state to experience most closures.
Of their 1,389 locations currently operating across the country, 75 out of 109 will be out of business in California as of Monday, and 293 in different parts of the U.S. are listed to be closing as soon as Friday, according to the Columbus based retailer.
Big box discount store said it may close up to 315 stores distributed in 34 states in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, more than the original agreed number of 150 max. in a previous filing released in early July in which the company revealed it would close 35 to 40 stores by the end of the year.
USA Today explained the new filing outlined updated loan terms for the retailer “that lowered the store’s credit limit and raised the line’s interest rate in addition to the closings”.
“In 2024, the U.S. economy has continued to face macroeconomic challenges including elevated inflation, which has adversely impacted the buying power of our customers,” Big Lots said in the filing. Sales in the first quarter of 2024 fell more than 10% compared to the previous year.
Big Lots has not released a complete and detailed list of stores that will be closing, but there are already signs displayed in the affected locations.
