Many formal studies have demonstrated the importance of social interaction for the wellbeing of senior citizens. Active seniors in the City of Doral have every month the opportunity to enjoy plenty of activities, especially tailored to their interests.

The award winning Parks and Recreations Department of the City of Doral runs the “Doral Silver Club for Active Seniors” program, which includes events ranging from bingos and luncheons to seminars, concerts and trips, as the recent cruise where twenty-eight seniors from the community, chaperoned by Michael Festa from the Parks Department, traveled for three days to the Bahamas.

“The main goal of the Silver Club is enhancing the overall quality of life and wellbeing for our senior population,” explained Barbara Hernandez, Parks and Recreation Director. “Our programs and activities provide the means for them to socialize, exercise, and remain active which in turn improves their overall health and psychological wellness. We want our seniors to enjoy programs and events within their community, amongst friends and neighbors. It is at the heart of our department’s mission to provide world class programs and facilities to people of all ages.”

With more than 500 seniors registered as members of the club, all activities planned generally have a numerous attendance and pre-registration is advised. The majority of events are bilingual, therefore there is no language barrier for those who want to participate and enjoy them.

Along with many of the young families that have moved to Doral in the recent years, have come their parents and grandparents. This ever-growing population has found in the Silver Club a haven to meet people their ages, retired and active, eager to make new friends and enjoy life to the fullest. It has been extremely important for them to feel welcome to their new community and their participation on this group eases their transition into a new way of life that is at times very different than the way they would have lived their golden years in their places of origin

“We have met people like us, retired, with grandchildren, that come from different countries. They are like a new family” said Gustavo and Clementina Martinez upon arriving from their trip to Bahamas. “This club has allowed us to socialize at the luncheons and seminars and also meet the City authorities. We don’t feel alone anymore, because we have made very good friends.”

As with all activities the Parks and Recreations Department organizes, those of the Silver Club are examples of safety and organization. Chaperones in charge of the groups are always on top of making sure all seniors are enjoying themselves in a healthy and secure environment and that everyone comes back home with a smile on their faces. That is very important for families who are entrusting their parents and grandparents to the organizing team.

“That my mother participates in the Doral Silver Club activities means peace of mind for me” said Julio Rios, “because she is enjoying of quality activities with fellow active seniors, with the support of the responsible personnel of the City of Doral.”

Horacio and Belkis Alvarez define their participation on the Silver Club as a “Life changing experience. We had great expectations when we moved to Miami. It is not easy to understand a new culture at this age. Doral offered us what we needed. Our lives got new expectations; we have met great friends, very kind people, all full of joy and energy. It is as if we were all synchronized. We found with the Silver Club that not only our family but also the community cares about us.”

What members of the Silver Club value the most, besides all the great experiences they have had at the events is the collective company they enjoy; the camaraderie that has developed and the friendships that have grown within the group. It has helped many of them to ‘come out of the shell’ and dare to adventure to see other places that otherwise they would not have visited, like Key Biscayne, Downtown Miami or Fort Lauderdale. These are valuable moments that enrich their quality of life.

Registration in the club is free, as well as participation on bingos, seminars and luncheons held at the Morgan Levy Park Community Center. Trips and tours have a fee that depends on the activity and usually require registration in advance.

Doral Silver Club:

Una opción para los Adultos Mayores

Gran cantidad de estudios formales demuestran la importancia de la interacción social para el bienestar de los adultos mayores. Este sector de la población de la Ciudad de Doral, tiene la oportunidad de disfrutar en la comunidad de gran cantidad de actividades especialmente orientadas a sus intereses.

El programa “Doral Silver Club para Adultos Activos” del Departamento de Parques y Recreación, incluye eventos que van desde bingos, almuerzos y seminarios hasta conciertos, paseos y viajes, como el reciente crucero a las Bahamas que tomaron veintiocho adultos de la comunidad, acompañados por Michael Festa, coordinador de actividades del Departamento, quien viajó junto con ellos a cargo de la organización y seguridad de todo el grupo.

“El objetivo principal del Silver Club es proveer disfrute y calidad de vida a la población de adultos mayores de nuestra ciudad,” explica Bárbara Hernández, Directora de Parques y Recreación.” Todas las actividades están orientados al disfrute, actividad física, ejercicio y socialización, que a su vez ayudan también a mejorar su salud y bienestar psicológico. Queremos que nuestros adultos mayores disfruten eventos dentro de su comunidad, junto a sus amigos y vecinos. El corazón de la misión de nuestro departamento es proveer programas, infraestructura y eventos de clase mundial para todas las edades en la Ciudad de Doral.”

Más de 500 personas se han inscrito como miembros del Silver Club. Las actividades siempre cuentan con numerosos asistentes, por lo tanto recomiendan pre-registrarse para participar. La mayoría de los eventos son bilingües, por lo tanto desconocer el inglés no es impedimento para aquellos que deseen participar.

Muchas de las familias que se han mudado a Doral en los últimos tiempos han traído también a sus padres y abuelos. Este sector de la población ha encontrado en el Silver Club un refugio donde pueden conocer personas de su misma edad, retiradas pero muy activas, deseosas de hacer nuevos amigos y continuar disfrutando la vida al máximo. Para ellos ha sido muy importante sentirse bienvenidos en su nueva comunidad. La participación en este grupo les ha facilitado la transición a esta nueva vida que muchas veces es diferente a las condiciones en las cuales los adultos mayores pasan sus años dorados en sus países de origen.

Pertenecer al Silver Club “ha hecho que conozcamos personas que están en las mismas condiciones nuestras, viviendo en el retiro ya con nietos y la mayoría de diferentes países,” comentaron Gustavo y Clementina Martínez a su llegada del crucero a Bahamas. “Somos como una familia. Ya no nos sentimos tan solos, pues hemos hecho muy buenas amistades.”

Al igual que todas las actividades organizadas por el Departamento de Parques, las del Silver Club son ejemplo de seguridad y organización. Los chaperones a cargo de los grupos están todo el tiempo pendientes de que los participantes estén disfrutando de un ambiente saludable y seguro, para que todos regresen a casa satisfechos. Esto es de suma importancia para las familias que les confían la participación de sus padres o abuelos en estas actividades.

Julio Ríos manifiesta que le da mucha tranquilidad saber que su “madre disfruta las actividades del Silver Club acompañada por personal de la Ciudad de Doral. Sé que estarán bien organizadas y que ella podrá pasarla muy bien.”

Horacio y Belkis Álvarez definen su participación en el Silver Club como “Una experiencia de vida. La llegada a Miami, fue para nosotros de gran expectativa, venir a un nuevo país, conocer nuevas costumbres, etc. Y a esta edad es algo bien difícil.  Doral nos ofreció lo que sin buscar encontramos.
Nuestras vidas pasaron a tener nuevas expectativas, conocimos gente amable, llena de energía. Pareciera que todos andamos en la misma sincronía. La Ciudad se ha encargado que nosotros los de la tercera edad, sintamos que además de nuestras familias, hay alguien más que se preocupa por nosotros”

Más allá de las experiencias gratas en los eventos, lo que los miembros del Silver Club valoran más es la mutua compañía, la camaradería que se ha desarrollado y las amistades que crecen dentro del grupo. Esto ha hecho que muchos de ellos se atrevan a aventurarse y conocer otros sitios que solos no habrían visitado, como Key Biscayne, Downtown Miami o Fort Lauderdale. Esos son momentos invaluables que enriquecen su calidad de vida.

La inscripción en el club es gratuita, al igual que la participación en los bingos, almuerzos y seminarios que tienen lugar en el Centro Comunitario ubicado en el Parque Morgan Levy. Los paseos y viajes tienen un costo asociado dependiendo de la actividad y usualmente requieren inscribirse por anticipado.
