Florida Blue Providing Gift Cards to Doral Families Impacted by COVID-19
Florida Blue, the state’s leading health insurer, is supporting the City of Doral residents during the COVID-19 health with a grocery store gift card program.
The coronavirus pandemic remains a great hardship for communities, individuals and families, and Florida Blue is collaborating with leaders and organizations across South Florida and the state to help those who are out of work or struggling financially. This includes several efforts to provide healthy and nutritious meals and snacks.
“Health and well-being is at the heart of all we do,” says Florida Blue Market President Penny Shaffer. “We know these are uncertain and scary times, and we pledge to work together to support people and communities in Doral, across South Florida, and across the state.” Florida Blue has come up with a creative way to address food security, by providing and distributing more than 400 grocery store gift cards to Doral families, to be used at local supermarkets. The gift cards will be distributed on August 17 and 18, and details will be available through the Doral Family Journal website and social media platforms.
“Our neighbors are facing tremendous and immediate economic, health and safety issues because of the COVID-19 public health crisis,” said Shaffer. “Florida Blue is proud to work with the City of Doral to address one of the most critical issues, food.”
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 began, Florida Blue – the state’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan – has invested more than $7 million dollars in communities across Florida to address urgent health and safety needs. This includes donations to non-profit organizations, universities, and leading emergency relief efforts that are focused on hunger for children, families and seniors, support for hourly workers as well as COVID-19 testing efforts and other health needs.
Free Bilingual Emotional Support Helpline
In addition to its financial investments around health and safety, Florida Blue is offering a no-cost bilingual emotional support helpline for all Floridians, even if uninsured or insured by another plan. Anyone can call 833-848-1762 to talk with a specially trained behavioral health counselor for help with stress, anxiety, grief or anguish they may be feeling. The counselors cannot provide information on COVID-19 testing or treatment.
Assistance with Loss or Affording Health Insurance
Florida Blue is also helping those who lost their employer health insurance, providing additional time for customers to pay their premiums, offering cost relief for many members, and has increased access to virtual care. Local Florida Blue Center’s nurses, social workers and service and sales specialists are providing personalized support virtually and can fully explain available options. Individuals can be connected to their local Center by calling 877-352-5830.
