For Aspiring Gators and Seminoles, the Wait Could End in December.
UF and FSU are launching Early Decision, and students who are admitted will be required to enroll.

These days, as I guide several Doral students through the college application process, two names come up again and again: the University of Florida (UF) and Florida State University (FSU). For many of them, becoming a Gator or Seminole is not simply one option among many. It is the dream.
This year, the road to Gainesville or Tallahassee comes with a major change that could reshape their admissions strategy. For the first time, both universities will offer Early Decision.
Imagine heading into the holidays already knowing that you have been admitted to your dream school.
But families need to understand that Early Decision is not simply about applying early and receiving an answer sooner. It is a commitment to enroll if the student is admitted.
The student, a parent or guardian, and the school counselor must all sign an Early Decision agreement. While waiting for a decision, the student may still apply elsewhere through nonbinding Early Action, Regular Decision, or Rolling Admission. What the student cannot do is submit another Early Decision application. If admitted, the student must withdraw all other pending applications.
The Early Decision deadline at both universities is October 15. UF will release decisions on December 11, while FSU will release them on December 17.
UF will accept Early Decision applications from Florida residents, students from other states, and international students. FSU will accept domestic applicants from Florida and other states, but international students and applicants to certain special programs will not be eligible. Only FSU’s Early Action plan will remain limited to Florida residents.
Will applying Early Decision improve a student’s chances of admission? At some universities, Early Decision applicants have higher acceptance rates. But we do not yet know whether that will be true at UF or FSU. This is the first year either university will offer the plan, so there is no previous data to compare. No student should apply believing that Early Decision is an easier way in.
A strong Early Decision candidate should be genuinely passionate about UF or FSU, consider it the clear first choice, and have a strong academic record ready by October 15. The student’s GPA, course rigor, and SAT, ACT, or CLT scores should already represent their best work. Early Decision is not ideal for someone who needs more time to improve grades or raise a test score.
Finances matter just as much. Early Decision may be attractive for students who qualify for Bright Futures or families with Florida Prepaid, since part or all of the tuition may already be covered. It may also work for families that know they can afford housing, meals, and other college expenses.
With Early Action, students have until May 1 to compare admission offers, scholarships, and financial aid before making a final choice. Early Decision, by contrast, should be chosen only when the university is the student’s unquestioned first choice, the academic record is already at its strongest, and the family knows it can afford the cost.

Por estos días, mientras acompaño a varios estudiantes de Doral en sus aplicaciones universitarias, hay dos nombres que se repiten una y otra vez: la University of Florida (UF) y Florida State University (FSU). Para muchos, convertirse en Gator o Seminole no es simplemente una opción. Es el sueño.
Este año, el camino hacia Gainesville o Tallahassee trae una novedad que podría cambiar por completo su estrategia de admisión. Por primera vez, ambas universidades ofrecerán Early Decision.
¿Te imaginas llegar a Navidad sabiendo que ya fuiste admitido a la universidad de tus sueños?
Lo que las familias deben entender es que Early Decision no significa simplemente aplicar más temprano. Es comprometerse a matricularse si el estudiante es admitido.
El estudiante, uno de sus padres y el consejero escolar deben firmar un acuerdo. Mientras espera la respuesta, puede presentar solicitudes Early Action no vinculantes, es decir, sin obligación de matricularse si es admitido, así como solicitudes Regular Decision o Rolling Admission. Lo que no puede hacer es solicitar Early Decision a otra universidad. Si es admitido, deberá retirar todas las demás solicitudes.
La fecha límite para solicitar será el 15 de octubre. UF anunciará sus decisiones el 11 de diciembre y FSU el 17.
En UF podrán solicitar residentes de Florida, estudiantes de otros estados y estudiantes internacionales. En FSU podrán hacerlo estudiantes de Florida y de otros estados del país; los internacionales y los aspirantes a algunos programas especiales no serán elegibles. La restricción exclusiva para residentes de Florida se aplicará únicamente al Early Action de FSU.
¿Aumentará Early Decision las probabilidades de admisión? En algunas universidades, estos candidatos registran tasas de admisión más altas. Sin embargo, todavía no sabemos si ocurrirá lo mismo en UF o FSU. Este será el primer año y no existen datos anteriores que permitan hacer una comparación. Nadie debe solicitar creyendo que ha encontrado una puerta más fácil para entrar.
Un buen candidato para Early Decision debe sentir verdadera pasión por UF o FSU, tenerla como su primera opción y llegar al 15 de octubre con un expediente académico sólido. Su GPA, el rigor de sus cursos y sus resultados de SAT, ACT o CLT deben representar su mejor trabajo. No es la opción ideal para quien necesita mejorar sus notas o espera aumentar su puntaje.
El factor financiero también es muy importante. Early Decision puede resultar atractivo para estudiantes elegibles para Bright Futures o familias con Florida Prepaid, porque parte o la totalidad de la matrícula podría estar cubierta. También puede funcionar para familias que saben que podrán cubrir la vivienda, la alimentación y los demás gastos universitarios.
Con Early Action, el estudiante puede esperar hasta el 1.º de mayo para comparar admisiones, becas y ayuda financiera antes de tomar una decisión. Early Decision, en cambio, solo debe escogerse cuando la universidad es la primera opción indiscutible, el estudiante ya presenta su mejor expediente y la familia sabe que podrá asumir el costo.
