John I. Smith K-8 Center honored for commitment to Mejia Brothers.
On February 23, John I. Smith K-8 Center was recognized by School Board Member Susie V. Castillo for its tireless support of students Sebastian and Alejandro Mejia during an emotional ceremony.
Sebastian and Alejandro, born in the USA and their parents from Colombia, have lived in this city since 2001. They are in 5th and 4th grade respectively and it’s there that they have distinguished themselves as being dedicated students, responsible and very polite children.
Thanks to their contagious joy and candor, nobody could imagine at first sight that Sebastian and Alejandro have faced major obstacles throughout their lives. From the moment of their birth, both children were diagnosed with Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcuba syndrome, a degenerative disease that can lead to other serious medical conditions that requires daily treatments and special care.
In the face of the many challenges the brothers have encountered through their young lives, they credit the teachers and support staff at the school for aiding them in their successes. They have distinguished themselves as top students earning numerous awards for their academic performance and good behavior.
Joined by Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, City of Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, and Councilwoman Claudia Mariaca, Ms. Castillo presented School Principal Mr. Genaro Navarro with a proclamation in recognition John I. Smith K-8 Center’s unwavering support towards its students and its commitment to educational excellence for all.
“While academics are important, I must say that attitude and positivity are the qualities that make these boys so special.” said Ms. Castillo. “The fact that we are even here is thanks to Sebastian, who with a heart full of gratitude asked for his school to be recognized for being ‘the best thing that has happened’ to him.”
Castillo added: “Extremely grateful to be part of the Mejia brothers’ lives & to witness their pure joy for learning and their appreciation for their school”.
Also, Alejandro and Sebastian received a proclamation from the school board.
“The right thing is to celebrate Sebastian and Alejandro as true angels,… Not only here in this school, not only here in the city of Doral; They are an inspiration to all of us in this great community”, said Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.
Mayor Bermudez and Councilwoman Mariaca also gave recognition to the school and the two students on behalf of the City of Doral.
The special condition of the siblings Sebastian and Alejandro Mejia and the optimism that they and their families maintain facing their health issues have gained the hearts of the community.

Susie V. Castillo, miembro de la Junta Escolar de Miami-Dade, reconoció el pasado 23 de febrero a la escuela John I. Smith K-8 Center por el apoyo incansable a los estudiantes Sebastián y Alejandro Mejía durante una emotiva ceremonia.
Sebastián y Alejandro nacieron en USA y junto a sus padres originarios de Colombia, han residido en esta ciudad desde el 2001. Son estudiantes de 5to. y 4to. grado respectivamente y se han distinguido por ser estudiosos, responsables y muy educados.
Gracias a su contagiosa alegría y candidez, nadie imaginaría que Sebastián y Alejandro han tenido que enfrentar grandes obstáculos a lo largo de sus vidas. Desde el momento de su nacimiento, ambos fueron diagnosticados con el Síndrome Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcuba, una enfermedad degenerativa que puede conducir a otras condiciones médicas serias que requieren tratamientos diarios y cuidados especiales.
Frente a los muchos desafíos que los hermanos Mejía han encontrado a través de sus vidas, no dejan de reconocer a los maestros y al personal de la escuela por el apoyo y ayuda en lograr cada uno de sus éxitos. Se han distinguido como los mejores estudiantes ganando numerosos premios por su desempeño académico y buen comportamiento.
Junto al Superintendente Alberto Carvalho, el Alcalde de la Ciudad de Doral, Juan Carlos Bermúdez, y la Concejal Claudia Mariaca, la Sra. Susie Castillo presentó al Director de la Escuela, Sr. Genaro Navarro, una proclamación en reconocimiento al apoyo incondicional de John I. Smith K-8 Center hacia sus estudiantes y su compromiso con la excelencia educativa para todos.
“Aunque los resultados académicos son importantes, debo decir que la actitud y la positividad son las cualidades que hacen que estos niños sean tan especiales”, dijo Susie Castillo. “El hecho de estar aquí es gracias a Sebastián, quién con un corazón lleno de gratitud pidió que su escuela fuera reconocida por ser “lo mejor que le ha pasado”.
Castillo agregó: Estoy extremadamente agradecida por ser parte de la vida de los hermanos Mejía y de ser testigo de su alegría por el aprendizaje y su aprecio por su escuela”.
Alejandro y Sebastián también recibieron una proclama de la junta escolar.
“Lo correcto es celebrar a Sebastián y Alejandro como verdaderos ángeles … Son una inspiración para todos nosotros en esta gran comunidad “, dijo el Superintendente de las Escuelas Públicas de Miami-Dade, Alberto Carvalho.
El Alcalde Bermúdez y la Concejal Mariaca también le dieron un reconocimiento a la escuela y a los dos estudiantes en nombre de la Ciudad de Doral.
La condición especial de los hermanitos Sebastián y Alejandro Mejía, y el optimismo que tanto ellos como su familia mantienen para enfrentar esta situación, les han permitido ganarse el cariño de toda la comunidad.
