PILGRIMS FROM DORAL SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH POPE FRANCIS

DORAL, FL – A pilgrimage is a journey or a quest with moral or spiritual significance.
Pope Francis’ visit to the US was an opportunity for many to review their set of beliefs and values and to reconnect with their lost faith. His message of peace, inclusion and openness struck a chord in a large segment of the population and many of them would have liked to have the opportunity to watch him in person, an opportunity enjoyed by many pilgrims who traveled from South Florida, and especially from Doral to participate in the celebrations he presided in New York and Philadelphia.
In the Big Apple it was difficult for the Pope to have that closeness to the people he really enjoys. Security was very tight and access restricted. There were protests by anti-Catholic groups on the streets near the venues where the pope would appear and the usual rush of the city did not stop for his visit. Between 10 and 12 Secret Service agents surrounded him all the time, and the public access to the liturgical celebrations was controlled with tickets delivered in parishes. Additional security clearances for the press to access the venues had to be requested with months in advance.
However, any discomfort it might have caused having to wake up really early, moving by plane or bus for hours, submitting several times to thorough security check points, all that effort was worth it to have the opportunity to see and hear live the inspiring words of Pope Francis. It is not the same to see him on TV than actually having the chance to see close by his tanned complexion, his slow pace while walking, and to hear his strong voice and enjoy that smile that has the ability to soothe the soul.
The experience in Philadelphia was different, because many more people had access to see him on the streets, the general motivation of the population in the city towards his visit was enthusiastic and, although security measures were very strict, the Pope could feel closer to the warmth of the people, something he truly enjoys and appreciate.
“As a Catholic, my main motivation to travel away from my town for a few days, leaving my family and my responsibilities is to be in a space full of God. A place full of the Holy Spirit and only having time to listen to His message, forgetting everything else for a moment, just to recharge my spirit and return to my city filled with God, ready to love more, understand more, forgive more” said Dafne Changir, a member of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Doral, who along with Yajaira Agüero, Elena Pardo and Michelle Ariccia traveled to Philadelphia to attend the papal mass.
Julio and Alejandra Moreno, also from Doral, traveled with other 12 pilgrims from the OLG parish and with their children had a very special experience with Pope Francis in Philadelphia. “My husband and I had been very fortunate of having seen Saint John Paul II twice during his visits to Venezuela, and each time the experience had given us so much happiness and peace, that we didn’t think twice about making the most of this opportunity” shared Alejandra. “We were moved to hear his Holiness Pope Francis speak and the chance to receive his blessing. He is so very humble and merciful and at the same time so palpably real in his down to earth appreciations, that we knew his participation in the closure of the World Meeting of Families, his homilies and messages would be very powerful.”
The Moreno Family and their companions were very fortunate to see the Pope really close. “The motorcade stopped right in front of our location to bring a baby that the Pope had spotted among the crowd for a special blessing, so instead of the normal few seconds of seeing him go by, we enjoyed of his closeness for a full minute or so. The emotion of being in his presence is hard to describe, but brings tears to my eyes even now as I reminiscence. It was totally worthwhile our efforts and sacrifice.”
Francis’ message fell deep into the souls of young Catholics, as Cristina Moreno. She says that “The Pope’s words about family and faith were the ones to resonate with me the most. It was insightful to hear him relate the church to the home: God is love and family is love. It’s clear that the devotion and commitment to the Catholic Church should begin at home and not the church itself. Love is gentle and as Pope Francis explained comes from small gestures in our routine lives and how faith sparks from that love. He reminded me of the small gestures of love my parents show me. I’m blessed that my family was devoted enough to embark on this weekend adventure to see his Holiness Pope Francis. It’s an experience I will always cherish and remember”.
Her brother Alejandro also shared that for him “Pope Francis’ visit to the US was truly memorable. Witnessing him firsthand and hearing him address a crowd full of immigrants from all nations on the importance of the family was truly a special moment. It’s not every day that one has the opportunity to celebrate mass with one million other faithful”
The presence of Pope Francis in the US was an opportunity to reunite families and renew commitments to faith and hope. His messages about respecting life in all its stages, respecting immigrants, defending the fundamental values of the family and caring for the planet are universal teachings, not only for Catholics but for all people who decide to open their hearts, regardless of their religion or beliefs.
Doral’s pilgrims who had the grace of making the journey and seeing the Pope in person have now to commit to be leaders by example of the messages received, in all their activities and relations, to continue building the city of progress and peace we all want to enjoy.
Viajeros de Doral cuentan sus experiencias junto al Papa Francisco

DORAL, FL – Un peregrinaje es un viaje o una búsqueda con significado moral o espiritual.
Para muchos la visita del Papa Francisco a los EEUU resultó una oportunidad para revisar su conjunto de creencias y valores y reencontrarse con la fe perdida. Su mensaje de paz, inclusión y apertura caló hondo en un amplio sector de la población y muchos de ellos habrían deseado tener la oportunidad de verlo y escucharlo de cerca, tal como pudieron hacerlo muchos de los peregrinos que viajaron desde el Sur de Florida, y en especial desde Doral para participar en las celebraciones que presidió en Nueva York y Filadelfia.
En la Gran Manzana la cercanía al pueblo que tanto agrada al papa estuvo bastante restringida por razones de seguridad. En las calles hubo protestas de grupos anticatólicos y el apuro habitual de la ciudad no se detuvo por su visita. Entre 10 y 12 agentes del Servicio Secreto le rodeaban por todos los flancos y el acceso del público a las celebraciones litúrgicas estuvo controlado con tickets entregados en las parroquias y pases adicionales de seguridad para la prensa que tuvieron que tramitarse con meses de antelación.
Pasar las incomodidades de levantarse de madrugada, trasladarse en avión o bus por horas y dejarse revisar una y otra vez en las entradas valió la pena para tener la oportunidad de escuchar en vivo las inspiradoras palabras de Francisco. No es lo mismo en la televisión que ver en vivo su paso cansado, su tez tostada, escuchar su voz enérgica y disfrutar esa sonrisa que tiene la capacidad de calmar el alma.
Filadelfia fue diferente porque muchas más personas tuvieron acceso a verlo en la calle, la motivación general de la población era muy entusiasta a la visita y, aun cuando las medidas de seguridad fueron estrictas, el Papa pudo sentir de cerca el calor de la gente, que lo llena de energía.
“Como católica la motivación principal que me lleva a viajar de mi ciudad dejando por unos días a mi familia y mis responsabilidades es estar en un ambiente lleno de Dios. Es tratar de llenarte del Espíritu Santo y solo tener tiempo para escuchar su mensaje, olvidarte por un momento de todo, solo para recargar tu espíritu de Dios y volver a tu ciudad llena de Él y así amar más, entender más, perdonar más” explicó Dafne Changir, miembro de la parroquia Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en Doral, quien junto a Yajaira Agüero, Elena Pardo y Michelle Ariccia se trasladó a Filadelfia para asistir a la misa papal.
Julio y Alejandra Moreno, también de Doral, viajaron con un grupo de 12 peregrinos de la parroquia y junto a sus hijos tuvieron en Filadelfia una experiencia muy especial. “Mi esposo y yo tuvimos la fortuna de ver dos veces a Juan Pablo II en sus visitas a Venezuela y ambas experiencias nos aportaron tanta paz alegría que no dudamos en aprovechar esta nueva oportunidad de escuchar al Papa Francisco y recibir su bendición. Es tan humilde y amable, y sus apreciaciones son tan certeras que sabíamos que los mensajes de sus homilías en la clausura del Congreso Mundial de las Familias serían muy importantes. “
La familia Moreno y sus acompañantes tuvieron la fortuna de que el Papa Móvil se detuviera más tiempo del normal frente a ellos para que Francisco pudiera bendecir a un bebé y “disfrutar de su cercanía por cerca de un minuto fue una bendición. La emoción de estar en su presencia es difícil de describir. Valió la pena todo el esfuerzo y sacrificio para llegar ahí” compartió Alejandra.
El mensaje de Francisco para la juventud católica sobre la fe y la familia fue lo más importante para Cristina Moreno: “Sus palabras sobre la fe y la familia al relacionar a la iglesia con el hogar resuenan en mi mente. Dios es Amor y la familia es amor. La devoción y el compromiso con la Iglesia Católica deben comenzar en el hogar. Al escuchar sus palabras me di cuenta cómo mi fe Católica fue cultivada día a día por mis padres. Mi fe ha crecido a partir de ellos y desde el amor incondicional que recibo diariamente de ellos y de mi hermano. Fue una bendición que mi familia decidiera embarcarnos juntos en esta aventura de ir a ver al Papa Francisco. Es una experiencia que atesoraré para siempre.”
La visita del Papa Francisco fue una oportunidad de reunir familias y renovar compromisos de fe y esperanza. Sus mensajes sobre el respeto a la vida en todas sus etapas, el respeto y apertura a los inmigrantes, la defensa de los valores fundamentales de la familia y el cuidado del planeta constituyen enseñanzas universales, no solamente para los católicos sino para todas las personas que decidan abrir su corazón a recibirlas, independientemente de su religión o creencia.
Los peregrinos de Doral que tuvimos la gracia de realizar el viaje y ver al Papa personalmente tenemos en los hombros el compromiso de ser entes multiplicadores de esos mensajes, cada uno en sus actividades y entorno más cercano, para continuar construyendo la ciudad de progreso y paz que todos deseamos disfrutar.
