Doral Academy Charter’s math teams have grown dramatically in a very short time.  Membership has grown from five to over a hundred in the past three years.  This group of dedicated students and teachers has distinguished itself in a short time by winning many awards at the local, state, national and international levels. They recently attended Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society) State Convention in Orlando where they won 31 awards, placed 9th out of all schools in the state, and first out of all participating schools from Miami Dade County.

The City of Doral honored these students at the City Council Meeting on May 11 held at City Hall.  Students were presented with certificates signed by Mayor Luigi Boria recognizing them for their remarkable achievements at the Mu Alpha Theta State Convention.  Their math teachers Sam Koski and Libby Manning also attended.

These students take their math and academics very seriously.  They attend an Early Bird math class every morning at 6:30 before the regular school day begins and also attend after school math practice sessions. They participate in regional and invitational math competitions throughout the state, most of which take place on Saturdays. They take numerous competitive state, national and international tests throughout the year, and their results are compared to thousands of other students taking this same tests at their schools.  They attend a summer intensive math camp.

The students from the middle school participate in most of the activities along with the high school group. The middle school group has placed first at county MathCounts and Middlementary Math Bonanza for two consecutive years.

Last year, the high school team went to Salt Lake City for national convention.  This summer, they are headed to St. Louis in July to compete, and next year, to Buffalo, New York.

Competitions for the 2016-2017 school year will take them to FGCU, Ft. Myers; Tallahassee; Tampa; Weston and Orlando.   Nationals will be in New York. Local competitions will be held at Ferguson, University of Miami, Miami Dade, and St. Thomas University.
