The Importance of Organ Donation in Our Hispanic Community

Para leer en Español

Every day over 100,000 men, women, and children in the United States are waiting for a transplant that will give them a second chance at life. In the state of Florida, more than 5,000 people are on the waiting list for a life-saving organ. Among them, more than 1,000 are Hispanics who are fighting for their future while waiting for the miracle of a donor.

Organ donation is a selfless act that can make a difference in many lives. A single donor can save up to 8 lives through the gift of organ donation and improve the quality of life for more than 75 people with tissue and cornea donation.

However, the need remains greater than the number of available organs, making it crucial for more people to decide to register as donors.

The Hispanic community plays a fundamental role in this cause. In many cases, compatibility between donors and recipients depends on factors such as blood type and genetics, making it essential for more people in our community to join this effort. By registering as a donor, each person has the power to change and save lives not only within our own community but beyond.

Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency (LAORA) is dedicated to saving lives through organ, eye, and tissue donation. As a federally designated organ procurement organization, we work tirelessly to support the families of donor heroes, honor the legacy of donors, and provide hope to those on the transplant waiting list. In 2024 alone, Life Alliance saved 466 lives, and thanks to the generosity of our heroes, 533 organs were donated.

It is important to demystify organ donation and encourage conversations among our families and loved ones. The decision to donate is a legacy of life, hope, and generosity.
