Upcoming City of Doral workshops encourage community participation.
Government Incentives for Businesses and Mayor’s Citizens Government Academy

If becoming a more involved resident and increasing your participation in the community are among your resolutions for the New Year, the City of Doral is providing you and your business with two great opportunities for learning how to do it.
1- Mayor’s Citizens Government Academy
Starting on January 28th, and every Tuesday for 10 weeks, will take place the 5th session of the Mayor’s Citizens Government Academy. This annual workshop, organized by the Code Compliance Department, provides Doral residents and business owners with the chance of learning first-hand how the government of the City of Doral works.
During a two-hour session every week, the operation of a department from the city will be explained to the audience by either the director or members of the staff that perform the tasks to provide service to the residents and business owners in Doral.
It is an extraordinary opportunity not only for meeting your neighbors and the authorities but also for learning about the way government works in our municipality, the County, the State and even the country. Those Doral residents that have recently moved to the city should take advantage of this training in order to understand the rules and procedures of their new community.
Understanding the operation of the government of the City provides residents with a new point of view that makes them better appreciate the importance of being involved in the community.
At the end of the ten weeks, those that attend 80% or more of the sessions receive a certificate and are publicly recognized during a Council Meeting.
Several graduates from previous sessions of the Mayor’s Citizens Government Academy have become so involved and interested in helping taking care of the City they call home, that decide to commit and volunteer their time and efforts working on different City Advisory Boards. But even those who have not got that involved still become strong and influential voices for the wellbeing of the community.
All sessions are taught in English and registration is free. The deadline for registration is January 23rd. Registration form can be found on the City of Doral website
2- Incentives for Businesses that hire people with disabilities
On January 30th from 9 to 11 am will take place a workshop for business owners on government incentives for businesses that hire people with disabilities.
With presentations by organizations such as Enterprise Florida, South Florida Division of Blind Services, K-Lo Enterprises, Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and South Florida Workforce among others, business owners in attendance will learn about the different incentives the government can provide them and what are the requirements for hiring these employees.
Those incentives include tax breaks; follow up by counselors; 30 days payments and many others, depending on the agreements and the agencies or divisions involved. Application requirements and procedures will be extensively explained at the workshop.
This is one of the initiatives the Special Needs Advisory Board of the City of Doral has developed for providing assistance to the many residents of the city that have disabilities and to inform businesses of these alternatives.
“These are people prepared professionally and are backed by the agencies; they are very committed and want to work. They are looking forward to being part of the workforce and be productive”, expressed Mrs. Luz M. Rosenfeld, activist and member of the Special Needs Advisory Board, who is part of the committee that organizes the event along with the Doral Business Council.
Workshop is free. Registration starts at 8:30 am and session will last from at 9am to 11am at the City of Doral Council Chambers.

La Ciudad de Doral estimula la participación ciudadana

Si entre sus propósitos de Año Nuevo se encuentran ser un mejor ciudadano y participar más activamente en su comunidad, la Ciudad de Doral tiene este mes de Enero para usted y su negocio dos excelentes oportunidades para aprender cómo hacerlo.
1- La Academia de Ciudadanos
Todos los martes, comenzando el 28 de Enero, los participantes en la 5ta Academia de Ciudadanos (Mayor’s Citizens Government Academy) de la Ciudad de Doral, se reunirán durante 10 semanas en la sede de la Alcaldía.
Este adiestramiento, que se dicta una sola vez al año desde el 2009 y que cada año incrementa la cantidad de participantes, es organizado por el departamento de Normas y Procedimientos (Code Compliance) y representa una excelente oportunidad para que los residentes y empresarios de Doral aprendan de primera mano sobre el proceso de gobierno municipal.
Cada una de las sesiones semanales es dictada por el Director de cada departamento de la Ciudad u otro miembro de su equipo, quienes explican a la audiencia las tareas y procesos que realizan para proveer los servicios a la comunidad de Doral.
Es una oportunidad extraordinaria no solamente para conocer otros vecinos y a las autoridades municipales, sino para aprender y comprender cómo funciona el gobierno municipal e inclusive el gobierno del Condado, el Estado y el país.
Es muy recomendable la participación de los residentes de Doral que se hayan mudado recientemente a la ciudad, para que aprendan sobre su nuevo entorno y comprendan mejor las reglas, procesos y procedimientos de su nueva comunidad.
La comprensión del método de gobierno de la Ciudad provee a los participantes un nuevo punto de vista, que les permite apreciar mejor la importancia de cumplir las reglas e involucrarse activamente en la comunidad.
Una vez culminadas las 10 semanas de entrenamiento, aquellos que hayan asistido a un 80% o más de las sesiones reciben el certificado de reconocimiento durante una reunión del Concejo.
Muchos de los graduados de las anteriores sesiones de la Academia de Ciudadanos han decidido participar activamente e involucrarse en las actividades gubernamentales, al punto de entregar su tiempo de manera voluntaria participando en varios de los Comités de la Ciudad. Y muchos otros se han convertido en voceros y activistas influyentes para velar por el bienestar de la comunidad.

2- Incentivos para empresas que contraten personas discapacitadas
El taller informativo sobre los incentivos gubernamentales para las empresas que contraten personas con discapacidades tendrá lugar el jueves 30 de enero, de 9 a 11am en la sede de la Alcaldía.
Entre las empresas participantes como panelistas se encuentran Enterprise Florida, South Florida Division of Blind Services, K-Lo Enterprises, Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, South Florida Workforce y otras. Los empresarios que asistan aprenderán sobre los incentivos gubernamentales disponibles y cuáles son los requerimientos para aplicar a ellos al generar empleo para personas con discapacidades.
Rebajas de impuestos, seguimiento con consejeros, 30 días de pago, son algunos de los ejemplos de incentivos que recibirán los empresarios, dependiendo de los acuerdos a los cuales lleguen con las agencias o divisiones gubernamentales involucradas. Los detalles sobre estos incentivos, requerimientos para participar en el programa de generación de empleo y procedimientos a seguir serán extensamente explicados en el taller informativo.
Esta actividad es una de las iniciativas del Comité de Ciudadanos con Necesidades Especiales de la Ciudad de Doral, quienes recopilan los requerimientos de los residentes con discapacidades e informan al gobierno local sobre alternativas para apoyar esas necesidades.
“Estas personas están preparadas profesionalmente y tienen el apoyo de las diferentes agencias. Tienen un alto nivel de compromiso y desean trabajar, pues quieren ser parte de la fuerza productiva de la ciudad”, expresó la Sra. Luz Marina Rosenfeld, activista y miembro de Comité de Necesidades Especiales, quien es parte del equipo que está organizando el evento, con el apoyo del Doral Business Council.
La participación en el taller es gratuita. Las inscripciones comenzarán a las 8:30 am y las presentaciones se realizaran de 9 a 11 am en la Sala del Concejo Municipal.
