Let’s Enjoy Our Museums: A cultural city guide for this summer

Miami is not only known for its beautiful beaches, weather, sports teams, shopping malls, and entertainment; but is also known for its diverse cultural richness which makes Miami a very attractive city. That’s why this edition is dedicated to discover our museums. Here you will find different options for the whole family to explore and learn a little more about Art, Culture and History of our Magic City. Although some options may be well known by most of our readers, you will discover when to visit those attractions at no cost!
Let’s start our list by checking what is available for children. Thanks to some private company’s sponsorship, the whole family can enjoy the Miami Children’s Museum for free every third Friday of the month from 3:00pm until 9:00pm. Your kids will explore great interactive exhibits which are related to arts, culture, community and communication. Also, on the second Saturday of every month the museum holds Sensory Saturdays for children with special needs. Lights and sounds are dimmed to create a comfortable environment for children to explore. Pre-registration is required. Visit www.miamichildrensmuseum.org for more information on this activities.
Next on our list is the Bass Museum of Art. This museum offers a range of dynamic contemporary art exhibitions and a great educational art program called IDEA@thebass. This program was developed in conjunction with the Stanford University and uses art to stimulate the critical thinking skills of children between the ages of 3 and 10. Work on your schedule so you don’t miss the ‘Family Day at the Bass Museum’ the last Sunday of every month from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. We definitely can’t forget about railroads, locomotives and trains by visiting for free the Gold Coast Railroad Museum the first Saturday of each month. Train rides on the “Edwin Link Children’s Railroad” are offered for both children and adults on weekends. You can even learn how to operate railroad equipment or participate in the guided tours as part of the education program offered by the museum. Plan your visit at www.gcrm.org
Children will marvel to the Milky Way and will love the moon, stars and planets at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science‘s Free Planetarium Star Show, held on the first Friday of each month. The planetarium show starts at 7:00 pm, followed by a rooftop observatory viewing from 8:30pm to 10:00pm. Hands-on activities and demonstrations for kids take place from 7:15pm to 8:45pm. Pérez Art Museum Miami is not forgotten in our journey which offers free admission for all families every second Saturday of the month with great hands-on activities from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Admission is also free every first Thursday when the museum closes at 9:00pm. With these programs, the museum offers an excellent opportunity for families to explore the museum, learn something new, create art and enjoy time together in a fun-filled activity. Admission for kids under 6 is free all year round and students have special rates. The museum also offers guided tours in English or Spanish from Tuesdays to Saturdays. Even more art can be found at Lowe Art Museum. This Museum features Miami’s most comprehensive collection of western and non-western art. Designated a “Major Cultural Institution” by the State of Florida in 1987, the museum sits at the heart of the University of Miami. Admission is free on Donation Day, the first Tuesday of each month including a free gallery tour at 11:00 am. This could be a great option for teenagers. HistoryMiami is another great option for families during this summer. Offering “Family Fun Days”, every second Saturday of each month from 10:00am to 5:00pm, the museum is free for all children and adults with a variety of activities including guided tours, craft activities and live performances from community based artists. Because of its convenient location, this museum also offers excellent tours, from either walking, biking or boat tours, to educational coach, gallery and eco-history tours. Also on June 26, the museum will open the exhibit “Operation Pedro Pan”, don’t miss it. www.historymiami.org
If your family is a history lover, then the Jewish Museum of Florida in Miami Beach is the best choice. All exhibits are oriented to preserve and communicate the richness and diversity of Jewish life in Florida since 1763. You can visit the museum from Tuesday through Sunday for just $6 adults and free for children under 6. Family rate of $12. You can also save $1 per admission if you print an online coupon available at www.jewishmuseum.com.
Another option for History Lovers is found at the Biltmore Hotel. This is more than a magnificent hotel; this is an icon for many Coral Gables residents who are proud to consider this beautiful building as a museum. Free tours are held every Sunday at 1:30pm and 2:30pm. You’ll see the gorgeous grounds, and hear about the hotel’s rich history, including a ghost story!. www.biltmorehotel.com
Even though these are not museum options, Art followers will have a blast every second Saturday of the month from 7pm to 10pm at the Wynwood Arts District and the Design District’s “Art Walk” through recognized participating galleries. A variety of delicious restaurants invites you to finish the night with a delighted dinner. A special night out option for parents. www.wynwoodmiami.com. Also, the first Fridays of each month from 6:00pm to 10:00 pm, the Night of Sensory Delights at Gables Gallery Night in Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Coral Gables will provide the opportunity to meet artists and view their creations, as visitors swing to the rhythms of jazzy Latin melodies visiting more than 20 galleries, all for free. Last but not least is the Coral Gables Museum with a special “Family Day on Aragon” the second Saturday of each month with special activities from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Every month is a new theme, a new opportunity for children to explore and learn in a fun and educational environment. Special prizes and live performances are common. Además de sus bellas playas y parques, su clima, sus equipos deportivos, centros de compras y entretenimiento, Miami es conocida por su variada riqueza cultural, lo que la hace una ciudad muy atractiva. Es por ello que esta edición les presentamos diferentes opciones con el fin de explorar y aprender un poco más del arte, la cultura y la historia del lugar donde vivimos. Aunque algunas opciones tal vez sean conocidas, les contaremos cuáles son esos días donde se pueden visitar esas atracciones al más bajo costo.
Comencemos nuestra lista con museos infantiles. Gracias al patrocinio de algunas empresas privadas, usted y su familia podrá disfrutar gratuitamente del Miami Children’s Museum el tercer viernes de cada mes desde las 3:00pm hasta las 9:00pm Los exploradores tienen disponible una variada cantidad de exhibiciones y actividades de arte, cultura y comunicación. También en este museo, el segundo sábado de mes, se lleva a cabo el “Sábado Sensorial” en el cual se realizan actividades guiadas, con ambientes agradables bajo en luces y sonido que ayuden a estimular a niños con necesidades especiales. El siguiente en la lista es el Bass Museum of Art. Este museo, además de su hermosa colección de antigüedades renacentista y barroco, tiene un programa educativo y gratuito para los más pequeños llamado IDEA@thebass, creado con la participación de la Universidad de Stanford, el cual utiliza el arte para estimular el pensamiento crítico de los niños entre las edades de 3 y 10 años. Incluimos también los ferrocarriles, trenes y locomotoras en esta edición visitando el Gold Coast Railroad Museum gratuitamente los primeros sábados de cada mes. Este museo, además de su exhibición, ofrece paseos en tren para el público en general, programa completo para aprender a operar equipos de trenes y tours guiados por todo el parque. ¡Hasta la luna, estrellas y planetas están incluidas! Sus niños quedaran fascinados con el show gratuito sobre estrellas que ofrece el Planetarium del Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science cada primer viernes de mes. El espectáculo comienza a las 7:00pm, seguido por una sesión de observatorio de 8:30pm a 10:00pm. Los más pequeños también tienen actividades interactivas de 7:15pm a 8:45pm. No olvidamos a Pérez Art Museum Miami, donde cada segundo sábado de mes las familias pueden disfrutar de entrada libre todo el día y actividades especiales de 1:00pm a 4:00pm. También la entrada es gratuita el primer jueves de mes cuando el museo tiene horario extendido hasta las 9:00pm. Este museo ofrece oportunidades de exploración, música, galerías, y más. Niños menores de 6 años son bienvenidos gratuitamente todo el año y los estudiantes tienen descuentos especiales. Continuando con arte exploramos el Lowe Art Museum. Este museo cuenta con la más completa colección de arte occidental y no occidental de Miami. Designado como ” La Gran Institución Cultural” en 1987, el museo se encuentra en el corazón de la Universidad de Miami. Ofrece visitas gratis en el Día de Donación, el primer martes de cada mes, incluyendo una gira por la galería a las 11:00 am. Una excelente opción para adolescentes. HistoryMiami es otra buena opción para las familias durante este verano. Con su “Family Fun Days”, cada segundo sábado de mes de 10:00 am a 5:00pm, el museo abre sus puertas de forma gratuita con una variedad de actividades que incluyen visitas guiadas, artesanías y presentaciones en vivo de artistas de la comunidad. Debido a su ubicación, este museo también ofrece excelentes tours, desde caminatas, en bicicleta o excursiones en barco, hasta tours educativos de galería y eco-historia. Recuerde que el día 26 de junio, el museo estrenará la exposición “Operación Pedro Pan”, no se lo pierda. www.historymiami.org
Si le gusta la historia, no deje de visitar el Jewish Museum of Florida en Miami Beach. Sus exposiciones están orientadas a reunir, conservar y enseñar a la comunidad la riqueza y diversidad de la vida judía y su experiencia en la Florida desde 1763, mostrando su historia y su influencia. Puede visitar este museo de martes a domingo por solo $6 adultos y gratis para niños menores de 6 años. Tarifa familiar de $12. Y continuando con la historia, el Biltmore Hotel para muchos, además de un icono de Coral Gables, es considerado un gran museo. Ofrece tours sin ningún costo alguno cada domingo en los horarios 1:30pm y 2:30pm. No se pierda la riqueza de la historia de este hotel, sus piezas de arte, esculturas, vistas y hasta historias de fantasmas. www.biltmorehotel.com
Aunque no son museos si hay mucho que aprender en este par de opciones especial para padres. Comenzando con Wynwood Arts District y Design District Art Walk siendo anfitriones cada segundo sábado de mes desde las 7:00pm hasta las 10:00pm para realizar un “Paseo de Arte” a través de sus galerías principales y culminar con variadas y deliciosas opciones de restaurantes que se encuentran en el recorrido. www.wynwoodmiami.com. Tambien las “Noche de Placeres Sensoriales” del Gables Gallery Walk, cada primer viernes de mes desde las 6:00pm a las 10:00pm donde podrá conocer artistas y sus creaciones, mientras se mueve al ritmo de melodías de jazz latino y visita más de 20 Galerías ubicadas a lo largo de Ponce de Leon Blvd. Se ofrece transporte de cortesía para visitar las diferentes galerías. www.coralgables.com
De ultimo pero no menos importante, el Coral Gables Museum ofrece el Día Familiar Aragón, el segundo Sábado de cada mes con actividades especiales de 2:00pm a 5:00pm. Cada mes un tema distinto, premios y presentaciones en vivo para que sus hijos exploren y aprendan mientras se divierten. La admisión es gratuita todo el día. www.coralgablesmuseum.org
