Embracing Kindness
By Lucy Gonzalez
I’ll never forget the time I received a random act of kindness.
A stranger paid for my drink at the drive-through in front of me. They didn’t have to do that, but I remember it as a highlight of my day. Unexpected moments like these encourage me to spread a little extra kindness to others throughout my life.
Acts of kindness can be performed by anyone and can focus on anything. Consider today an opportunity to spread a little extra kindness to those around you. Your effort doesn’t have to be over-the-top. Any kind gesture has the potential to make a huge impact. Oftentimes, it’s easy to get caught up in your personal, academic and/or occupational life. It is normal to become consumed by the day-to-day challenges we face. Although these struggles might not leave room for others, remember there are millions of people on this planet who are also facing challenges.
A smile or a genuine greeting can brighten a person’s day. Your goodwill can range from millions of different ideas: compliment a stranger, take out your neighbor’s trash cans, or simply open a door for a stranger. These pay-it-forward gestures can also be anonymous: donate to a local shelter or pay for someone’s drink next time you’re at the Starbucks’ drive-thru.
Between February 14 – 20, people around the world celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week. It’s a special time to dig deep and share joy through thoughtful and kind actions with others. So, take a moment to spread some love to others and embrace your kindness!
