Your 65th birthday is coming up and you realize you need to think about Medicare! You start asking family, friends, co-workers and even your accountant or financial advisor and everyone has different advice. Then you take to the internet set on finding your own answers and realize what you’re reading is only confusing you more. Now what do you do? Well just read on. We have compiled a Frequently Asked Questions list aimed at reducing your anxiety and helping to address basic questions regarding Medicare and what to do as you head into your 65th birthday milestone.
Q: Is it mandatory to enroll in Medicare Part A and B before you turn 65 years old?
A: The short answer is NO. Here’s why:
- You can apply to get Medicare Part A and B either 3 months before your 65th birthday, on your birthday month, or up to 3 months after your 65th
- If you are working and have health insurance through your employer, and you want to keep that insurance, THEN YOU ONLY HAVE TO APPLY FOR PART A.
- If you are going to continue working, but you want to explore your Medicare options, then you should speak to a Medicare experienced health insurance agent who can help you compare your current medical benefits to what Medicare coverage would look like. This way you can make an informed decision to either keep your current coverage or cancel that and move into Medicare. It’s your choice!
Q: If you don’t sign up for Medicare Parts A & B when you turn 65, will you get penalized?
A: It depends…
-
- If you have “creditable” health insurance when you turn 65, you will NOT be penalized for not enrolling in Medicare at that time. “Creditable” coverage can be health insurance through an employer, or federally qualified retiree plans which include prescription drug coverage.
- The individual marketplace insurance (ACA) or COBRA are NOT considered creditable so beware of these pitfalls.
The bottom line is that for you to be ready and well informed about your Medicare Rights and Responsibilities when turning 65, you should consult with a licensed and experienced health insurance agent experienced in Medicare.
