THE ART SHACK: 100% Success in Admissions to Art Magnet Schools.

For the past 6 years I have had the privilege to help children make their dream of perusing their love for art a reality. 100% of budding artists I have coached have been accepted to the art magnet schools and charter art programs they wanted to attend for Middle and High school.

 Visual and Performing Art Magnet Schools are amongst the strongest academic schools in our district, with some ranked in the top places nationally. Many unsuspecting parents discard the option of an art program, thinking their child will not get the best education. South Miami Middle and Southwood are A schools where your preteen will get excellent teachers for the core subjects (Math, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies) and the opportunity of 2 periods of art a day. Besides this, he or she will be studying along other highly creative and focused children.

 At the high school level, New World, Coral Reef and DASH (Design and Architecture Senior High) are top choices. US Today ranked the latter #15 best public high school in the nation, and the other two are amongst the 100 best in the country. New World School of the Arts is part of Miami Dade College and shares the college teachers at the high school level.

 Charter schools with art programs are also an attractive option, with Doral Preparatory Academy in our own backyard and Miami Arts Charter, the only one offering a creative writing program along the other arts.

Whether through photography or broadcasting, visual arts or theater, architecture or industrial design, an education that nurtures creativity enriches your child and sets him apart from others. These programs promote the skills that organizations from universities to businesses are looking for: creative thinking, communication and team work, flexibility and quick adaptability.

 Many parents have realized the value of these schools, so the number of students applying has risen dramatically in the past 3 years. Auditions where the child shows off his skills and portfolio presentations are a must. This is where I come in to help them succeed. When coaching each child it is important that I get to know him. An interview informs me of interest, desires, and concerns. A consistent portfolio is the presentation card of the young artist. It reflects who the artist is as a person, his or her desire to explore different media and subject matters and the craftsmanship acquired.

As Federica Caso put it to me after being accepted to every magnet and charter school she applied, success comes with sustained hard work, perseverance and focus. Most most children wait till September to start working on their portfolios. Those that start in the summer before entering 5th or 8th grade see their rewards doubled in that homework and after school activities do not interfere with their creative process. Durante los últimos 6 años he tenido el privilegio de ayudar a varios niños a cumplir su sueño.100% de los jovenes que he entrenado han sido aceptados a los programas Magnet y Charter de arte en Middle y High School.

Las Escuelas Magnet de Artes están entre las mejores escuelas a nivel académico en nuestro distrito, incluso algunas están en los primeros lugares a nivel nacional. Muchos padres descartan la opción de un programa de arte pensando que su hijo no va a obtener la mejor educación. South Miami Middle y Southwood son dos middle schools clasificadas “A” donde su hijo tendrá excelentes profesores de materias comunes (Matemáticas, Ciencias, Lengua y Estudios Sociales) y 2 períodos de arte al día. Además, va a estudiar junto a otros niños altamente creativos y dedicados.

En el nivel de high school, New World, Coral Reef y DASH (Senior High de Diseño y Arquitectura) son opciones óptimas. US Today ha clasificado a esta última como # 15 en el ranking de escuelas secundarias públicas de la nación, y las otras dos también se encuentran entre las 100 mejores del país. New World School for the Arts es parte de Miami Dade College por tanto sus profesores son los mismos que enseñan a los universitarios.

Las escuelas charter con programas de arte son también una opción atractiva como Doral Preparatory Academy y Miami Arts Charter, la unica que ofrece un programa de escritura creativa.

Ya sea a través de la fotografía o el “broadcasting”, las artes visuales o el teatro, la arquitectura o el diseño industrial, una educación que fomente la creatividad enriquece a su hijo y lo distingue de los demás. Estos programas promueven las habilidades que universidades y empresas están buscando: pensamiento creativo, comunicación y trabajo en equipo, flexibilidad y rápida capacidad de adaptación.

Muchos padres se han dado cuenta del valor de estas escuelas, por lo que el número de estudiantes que compiten por una vacante ha aumentado en los últimos 3 años. La audicion donde los postulantes muestran sus habilidades y presentan su portafolio es el requisito obligatorio. Aquí es donde mi ayuda garantiza el éxito. El primer paso es conocer al alumno, sus intereses, deseos y preocupaciones. Un portfolio consistente es la mejor tarjeta de presentación. Este debe ser un reflejo de la persona, su deseo de explorar distintos medios y la destreza técnica adquirida.

Federica Caso lo expresó perfectamente al saber que había sido aceptada a todas las escuelas a las que había aplicado: el éxito viene con esfuerzo sostenido, perseverancia y enfoque. La mayoria de los niños esperan hasta Septiembre para comenzar a preparar su portafolios. Los que empiezan en el verano antes de 5to u 8vo grado se ven recompensados al evitar que las tareas y actividades durante el período escolar interfieran con su proceso creativo. ¡En The Art Shack estamos trabajando desde ahora!
