A Master Class in American Government: Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart visited RRDSHS.

Selected juniors and Seniors of the History and Government classes at Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School came back from spring break and were received by an exceptional teacher: Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, who stayed one more day in Miami before heading back to the legislative session in Washington to share a whole class period with these students, who were able to get a first-hand view of the American Government by their own Representative.
For many of them this was the first time they had been able to be in touch with a decision making official and they jumped at the opportunity to ask questions on key National issues like federal budget, national security, immigration reform, the future of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, the crisis in Ukraine and Venezuela, and the advantages and disadvantages of being a Congressman. Diaz-Balart was left with an excellent impression, not only of the quality of Social Studies education Doral students are receiving but also of the kind of involved citizens the Doral community is raising.
The event was organized by a joint effort of the RRDSH Social Studies Department, its chairwoman Ms. Iris Sanchez-Ruiz, the School Administration, the RRDSH PTSA and the Office of the Congressman.
Among the students who made very interesting questions regarding immigration was Senior Yonnahana Flores Gomez, who expressed at the end of the event that it was an excellent experience having met the Congressman, being that she also wants to serve the country by pursuing a career as a nurse and join the Navy.
When questioned about what he liked best of being a Congressman, Diaz-Balart said: “I love what I am doing today, to speak and to listen to folks. The answers come from this. It is the most rewarding part of my job. I have a two year job and I have to do the best I can in those years. It gets very intense; People come to my office to share very serious issues and helping individuals is really important. I am blessed to be in a position where I can do that”.
He concluded the presentation encouraging students to become very active in their communities, not only in politics but in all aspects of society to “continue making the United States of America the greatest country in the world”.

Los estudiantes Junior y Senior de las clases de Historia y Gobierno de Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School se encontraron al regreso del receso de primavera con un maestro de excepción: el Congresista Mario Diaz-Balart, quien retrasó un día su viaje a Washington antes de continuar con la Sesión Legislativa para dictar esta Clase Magistral sobre el Sistema de Gobierno Americano a estos jóvenes, muchos de los cuales tuvieron por primera vez en esta ocasión la oportunidad de compartir de primera mano con un Oficial Electo al Congreso de los EEUU.
La oportunidad fue propicia para que los estudiantes formularan todas sus preguntas sobre decisiones de impacto nacional tales como el presupuesto federal, la seguridad, la reforma migratoria, el futuro del Medicare, Medicaid y la Seguridad Social, las crisis en Ucrania y Venezuela y las ventajas y desventajas de trabajar como Congresista. Diaz-Balart quedó impresionado muy positivamente, no solo con el nivel de la educación en Estudios Sociales de los estudiantes sino también con la calidad de ciudadanos involucrados y responsables que la comunidad de Doral ha cultivado.
El evento fue posible gracias al esfuerzo conjunto del Departamento de Estudios Sociales de RRDSH y su coordinadora Sra. Iris Sanchez-Ruiz, la Administración de la escuela, la Presidente del RRDSH PTSA Sra. Zenaida Vilar y el personal de la Oficina del Congresista.
Una de las estudiantes que formuló interesantes preguntas sobre la reforma migratoria fue la Srta. Yonnahana Flores Gómez, integrante de la clase del 2014, quien expresó al final del evento que había sido una excelente experiencia conocer al Congresista y que ella también desea servir a su país pues desea cursar estudios de enfermería y luego asimilarse al US Navy.
Al preguntarle a Díaz-Balart sobre el aspecto que más le agrada de servir como Representante en el Congreso Nacional respondió: “Me gusta mucho participar en actividades como esta, donde puedo compartir con los ciudadanos y escucharlos. De estas conversaciones salen las respuestas. Es la parte más gratificante de mi trabajo. Solamente tengo dos años para llevar a cabo mi trabajo y debo hacer lo mejor que pueda en ese tiempo. Es muy intenso, pues las personas vienen a mi oficina a discutir situaciones muy serias, como por ejemplo situaciones de inmigración. Ayudar a los ciudadanos es muy importante y para mi es una bendición estar en una posición que me permite hacerlo.”
Para concluir, Díaz-Balart alentó a los estudiantes a continuar trabajando activamente en su comunidad, no solo en la escuela sino en todos los aspectos de la sociedad “para continuar haciendo de los EEUU el mejor país del mundo.”
