Doral Academy win their first state basketball championship

The Doral Academy Firebirds ended their Cinderella season with a 43-38 victory over Choctowhatchee Indians to capture their first ever FHSAA State Championship in Boys Basketball at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland.

The Firebirds used their tenacious defense and great guard play from scoring leader Johnathan Nunez (14 points) along with guards Miguel Ayesa and Kobbie and Reggie Perez.

This game capped a season that included a 21 game winning streak as well as a streak of holding opponents under 50 points that began on December 20th of last year.

Doral Academy’s team was a reflection of their head coach, Jorge Fernandez who coached 17 years in college on teams such as the University of Miami, University of Central Florida, and South Alabama.

Fernandez’s emphasis on defense and fundamentals was the ultimate key to defeating some of the best teams in the state including 6 time state champion Miami Norland as well as the Indians of Choctowhatchee. The Firebirds finished the season with an impressive 32-2 record.

CONGRATULATIONS BOYS!!!!
