DLLOne day, 11 years ago, on the first Opening Day, Billy “The Marlin” made his grand entrance for the inaugural season of the Doral Little League (DLL).  Only a few months before that, there was no league, no field where to play, no teams. The Doral Little League was just a dream. But as Robert Van Name, the first president of the DLL, explained in a previous article published by the Doral Family Journal, “The inaugural try out  was scheduled for the first Saturday in December 2002. Over 210 players registered to play that inaugural season, we fielded 14 teams of 15 players per team. And the league grew to 24 teams with 340 players registered in our second year!”

Many years of success followed that inaugural season. “Last year (in 2013) the Doral Little League became the District Champions in the 10-12 division and back in 2009-2010 the Doral Little League won in all divisions, explained proudly Jose Santiago, the recently elected President of the DLL. “At the Doral Little League we have an open door policy. Any kid that would like to start playing baseball can come to us, we’ll evaluate him and we’ll place him in the corresponding category. For instance in the Minors division,  they actually throw, the learn how to pitch. And then you have the Majors divisions, it just gets better and better. But for the little ones is all about having fun!,” said Santiago.

_MG_9233They may not realize it now, but having fun, win or lose, they are making memories that will last a lifetime. Currently the league has over 350 participants registered in 5 divisions: Tee-Ball: Ages 5-7, Coach Pitch: Ages 6-9, Minors: Ages 8-11, Majors: Ages 10-12, Juniors: Ages 13-14.

“One of the benefits of the league is that it is affordable for any family. For the registration price they get the uniforms, the practice, the tournament and of course this includes the main trophy at the end of the Season,” said Jose Santiago.

It is estimated that 35 million people have played or volunteered for a local Little League Program. And its goal remain the same as it was in its origins, back in 1939, to give children of the world a game that provides fundamentals principles: Sportsmanship, Fairplay, and Teamwork. All values and principles that they can use later in life as good citizens.

The Spring Season starts in March at the Meadow Park, 11555 NW 58th St., Doral, FL 33178. For more information, please visit  www.dorallittleleague.org

Doral Little League:

Creando recuerdos que durarán toda una vida.

Por Claudia Drago.

_MG_9242Hace 11 años, en el primer día de apertura, Billy “The Marlin” hizo su entrada triunfal en la temporada inaugural de Doral Little League (DLL). Sólo unos pocos meses antes, no había liga, ni campo donde jugar, no había equipos. Doral Little League era sólo un sueño.
