Doral Schools Welcome New Principals.
Positive changes in Public Education choices and administration
The beginning of school year 2015-2016 is right around the corner and it is bringing exciting changes to the administration of Public Schools in Doral. The most important of those changes are the appointments of Mrs. Debbie F. Saumell as new Principal at Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center (EBT) and Mrs. Martha M. Muñoz at Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center (DRE).
The announcement was made in the month of July and both ladies have started right away to get involved with their school’s communities to have all details ready by August 24th.
Mrs. Debbie Saumell (EBT): “I love the energy in this community”
Former Principal at Rockway Elementary, Mrs. Saumell brings to EBT her experience in education and as administrator, along with her enthusiasm and energy to achieve great goals. She says the reception at the school has been “fantastic. Everyone is so friendly and the energy is incredible. I love the energy in this community.”
Coming from a school with great academic results and similar demographics to those in Doral, she feels confident of being successful on her new challenge as principal of a bigger school. “I came from a wonderful school. The whole feeling of family was evident there and feel the same thing here as well in this community. It is a much bigger school, but everybody is very welcoming and excited and very involved in the educational process here.”
Saumell looks forward to work together not only with the staff of administrators and teachers she has found at EBT but also with the PTA, the parents and the community. “Being involved is the best thing you can do for your child. It makes the process better working together. Teamwork ensures children get the best possible education. I look forward to working with the parents and I think it is going to be wonderful.”
At the moment she does not contemplate introducing changes on the school procedures that have been in place for many years and the community is used to follow. “I am new here; I want to start getting a feel for the school. If we need to make any changes they will be in the best interest of the children, doing whatever is needed to make sure they are successful and have great achievements.”
She sends a welcome message to all parents and children that will attend EBT this school year: “I look forward to a fantastic year full of energy and wonderful successes. I look forward to working together with my staff, the community and our boys and girls to make sure that they are very successful and we achieve great things.”
Mrs. Martha M. Muñoz (DRE): “To prepare students for the future”
Upon the retirement of Mrs. Marie Caceres at the end of the school year, all parents and students of DRE were expectant of the appointment of their new principal and the news of Mrs. Muñoz arrival have been very well received within the community.
“I have had the opportunity to meet some of the parents, staff and students. They have welcomed me very graciously, and the City of Doral has reached out to work with us this school year and providing the school assistance that might be necessary. Everyone has been really gracious to me and I am very grateful for that.”
Before her designation for DRE, she was Principal at Kinloch Park Elementary, and before that Muñoz led one of the most traditional schools in Miami, Shenandoah Elementary. “I have been administrator in schools that are very similar in size and demographics and even configuration [to DRE] and the difference is basically the location. Doral is a growing city that provides a good energy of hope for the future and for our students.”
Although she does not plan to introduce any specific changes in operation right away, she is open to possibilities in the future: “Just with the change of principal, there is inherent change. But at the same time being new to the school I really need to see where growth is possible and work accordingly to that.”
Mrs. Muñoz looks forward to working together with the parents for the wellbeing of the children at DRE. “I think parental involvement is very positive. As parents we have that responsibility, not only when our children get home but also to work collaboratively with the school so we can provide a unified effort for our children. Ultimately, the school and the parents we have the same goal: the success of our children.”
“I look forward to working with the community to provide all our students with the appropriate educational services, to ensure there is academic success, within a positive learning environment. Our goal is to prepare students for the future, to be well-rounded contributing members of society.”
More Choices for Doral schools
Besides welcoming new principals at two of the biggest schools in the City of Doral, the community also celebrates the opening of the long awaited Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School, which comes to alleviate the distribution of students in the area.
Mrs. Jeannette Acevedo-Isenberg, former lead teacher at Sunset Elementary, was appointed principal of this school at the beginning of 2015 and has handled all admission process for new students, and coordinated all tasks in order to have the school ready to enter operation on August 24th.
The school was built through private funds but will be operated by Miami-Dade Public Schools, offering a rigorous double curriculum on International Studies with choices of Spanish or Portuguese, in addition to the regular classes taught in English. The success of this “Comprehensive Dual Curriculum” has been proven to promote the development of fully bilingual and bicultural individuals.

Bienvenidas Dos Nuevas Directoras a Escuelas de Doral

Apenas faltan días para el inicio del año escolar 2015-2016 y dos escuelas de Doral estrenan directoras. La Sra. Debbie F. Saumell ha sido designada para Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center (EBT) y la Sra. Martha M. Muñoz para Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center (DRE).
Sus designaciones fueron anunciadas en el mes de Julio. Desde entonces, ambas han trabajado arduamente para involucrarse en las comunidades de sus escuelas y tener todos los detalles a punto para el inicio de clases el próximo 24 de Agosto.
Debbie Saumell (EBT): “Me encanta la energía de esta comunidad”
Antes de venir a EBT, Saumell fue Directora de Rockway Elementary. Trae a su nueva designación una amplia experiencia en educación y administración educativa, además de una gran energía y entusiasmo para lograr grandes metas. “La recepción de la comunidad ha sido fantástica. Todos son muy amables y tienen una energía increíble. Me encanta la energía de esta comunidad.”
En su escuela anterior obtuvo excelentes resultados académicos y la población del área es similar a Doral; ella confía que tendrá una gestión exitosa como directora en una escuela con mayor cantidad de estudiantes y programas. “Vengo de una escuela estupenda, con un clima muy familiar. Esto lo he sentido también en esta comunidad. Aunque la escuela es mucho más grande, todos me han recibido muy bien y con deseos de participar en el proceso educativo de sus hijos.”
Saumell tiene grandes expectativas de trabajar en conjunto no solamente con su equipo de maestros y administradores en EBT, sino también con el PTSA, los padres y la comunidad. “La participación comunitaria es lo mejor que los padres pueden hacer por sus hijos. Hace que el proceso educativo sea mucho mejor. Trabajando en equipo aseguramos que los niños tengan la mejor educación posible. Tengo muchos deseos de trabajar con los padres. Va a ser una grata experiencia.”
No tiene contemplados cambios inmediatos en los procedimientos y operación de la escuela. “Apenas estoy conociendo la escuela. Si contemplamos algún cambio en el futuro será para beneficio de los estudiantes. Haremos todo lo necesario para asegurarnos que sean exitosos y tengan grandes logros académicos.”
Saumell envía un mensaje de bienvenida a los padres y estudiantes de EBT: “Espero que tengamos un año escolar fantástico, lleno de energía y éxito. Trabajaremos juntos todos: staff, comunidad y estudiantes para asegurarnos de lograr grandes cosas este año.”
Martha M. Muñoz (DRE): “Preparar los estudiantes para el futuro”
Con el retiro de la Sra. Marie Cáceres al final del pasado año escolar, la comunidad de DRE esperaba la designación de la nueva directora. La noticia de la designación de la Sra. Muñoz fue recibida con mucha alegría por padres, estudiantes y empleados de la escuela.
“Ya he tenido la oportunidad de conocer algunos de los padres, empleados y estudiantes. Me han dado una agradable bienvenida. La Ciudad de Doral nos ha contactado para trabajar junto con nosotros y apoyarnos en todo lo que nuestra escuela pueda necesitar. Todos han sido muy amables conmigo y estoy muy agradecida por ello.”
Antes de su designación para DRE, su experiencia fue como directora en Kinloch Park Elementary. Muñoz también trabajó en una de las escuelas más tradicionales de Miami, Shenandoah Elementary. “He sido administrador en escuelas muy similares a DRE en tamaño, población y configuración. La mayor diferencia es básicamente la ubicación geográfica. Doral es una ciudad en crecimiento y eso trae muy buena energía para el futuro de la escuela y los estudiantes.”
No tiene planes inmediatos de hacer cambios específicos en la operación de la escuela, pero está abierta a posibilidades en el futuro: “Al cambiar la directora, hay un cambio inherente, pero al mismo tiempo, apenas estoy llegando a esta escuela. Identificaremos las oportunidades de crecimiento y trabajaremos en función de ello.”
Muñoz tiene muchos deseos de trabajar con los padres para el bienestar de los niños de DRE. “La participación de los padres es muy positiva. Como padres tenemos esa responsabilidad de trabajar en colaboración con la escuela, para proveer un esfuerzo unificado para nuestros niños. La escuela y los padres tienen la misma meta: lograr el éxito de los niños.”
“Deseo trabajar con la comunidad para que nuestros estudiantes tengan los servicios educativos adecuados que les aseguren el éxito académico en un ambiente positivo. Nuestra meta es preparar a los estudiantes para el futuro, para que sean miembros integrales de la comunidad.”
Mas opciones escolares en Doral
La comunidad no solamente da la bienvenida a las nuevas directoras de las dos escuelas más grandes de la ciudad. También celebra la inauguración de la tan esperada Downtown Doral Charter Elementary School, una institución que viene a proveer un desahogo en la distribución de la población estudiantil de la ciudad.
Jeannette Acevedo-Isenberg fue designada directora a comienzos de 2015, y ha liderado el proceso de admisión de los nuevos estudiantes, así como todas las tareas para lograr la puesta a punto de la operación de la escuela para su apertura el 24 de Agosto.
Esta escuela se construyó con fondos privados pero será operada por el Sistema de Escuelas Públicas de Miami-Dade. Ofrecerá un riguroso currículo de Estudios Internacionales, con opciones de español y portugués, adicionales a las clases regulares en Ingles. El éxito de este “Currículo Doble Extendido” ha sido probado con éxito en otras escuelas del sistema y promueve el desarrollo de individuos completamente bilingües y biculturales.
