School is over and our kids are full of energy and ready to have fun during the break. Now, what do we do we do with our kids during vacation?
Finding varied and economic alternatives for our children is sometimes a daunting task; That’s why during this edition, Doral family Journal is dedicated exclusively to review general choices of what to do with our children without killing our budgets!
Let’s start checking what’s happening at the Miami-Dade Public Library System:

- Monthly programs: All branches offer a well-rounded listing of events featuring music, general entertainment, art and crafts, magic shows and more. Look for the program brochure the first week of the month and start planning your visit based on your children’s ages and interest. These events are free of charge and offer activities from toddlers to teenagers.
- Summer Reading Program: Motivating reading during the summer, the library offers a really great program. Using weekly reading logs, children will report all books, stories, and articles they read. The best reward is developing interest in reading but also great prizes are raffled at the end of the program. The Summer Reading program will run from June 10th to August 5th, 2017.
- Museum Pass Program: Families can explore the city’s other cultural hubs using the library’s Museum Pass, a get-in-free card available for check-out that allows up to four family members access to 10 Miami museums, including HistoryMiami, Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, and the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum as well as the newly opened Frost Science Museum.

Kids Bowl Free: Registered children and young people 15 years and under received 2 free games of bowling every day all summer long just paying the shoe rental. Parents and relatives can also participate paying a flat rate of $ 24.95 which is valid for up to 4 people and last the entire season. Registration is online only at www.kidsbowlfree.com, from June 12 to August 20, 2017.
Movies: The Cobb Theaters at Dolphin Mall will be offering its Kids Summer Movie Escape program on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 am starting June 13 through August 3 with titles such as: Minions, Trolls, Penguins of Madagascar, The Lego Movie, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Kung Fu Panda 3 and more.
Also, June is Miami Film Month, offering discounted movie tickets at theaters across Miami – including for kids’ films.
You can also go to Coral Gables Art Cinema, which offers offbeat films for children, has screenings of The Painting, My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo and the National Theater Live performance of Peter Pan from July 14 to 16. Tickets to these films are $5 general admission and include a free popcorn and soda! More information at www.gablescinema.com
Marlins Park offers half-price tickets on Tuesdays, and Sunday games include kid-friendly pregame entertainment, as well as special Aquafina Family Four-Pack packages that include a hot dog and drink with each ticket.
Grapeland Water Park: Imagine sitting in a pool and staying refreshed while watching a funny animated movie. That’s the experience during Dive-In Movies, outdoor movie night every last Friday of the month at Grapeland Water Park, 1550 NW 37 Ave., Miami. Admission is $5. The water park opens at 5:30 p.m. so kids can enjoy the slide pools on Pirate’s Plunge or Shipwreck Island. Those close at 7:30 p.m. and everyone moves to Captain’s Lagoon, the big recreation pool and watch the movie while swimming or lounging in a float tube.
Ice Skating: In the high temperatures of summer, most of us tend to either cocoon ourselves in air-conditioned spaces or by a pool. But what better place to stay cool and skate like the angels than at Kendall Ice Arena? A great opportunity for the whole family to get out on the ice together. Michael’s: offers mini-projects in different stores throughout the summer. $5 per Session or $12 for 3 Sessions. Visit the nearest store, ask for the program which will be available until July 28 from 10 am to noon … and get ready to enjoy with your young children moments of leisure, making a craft developing creativity, and motor skills.
Do not forget the Summer Attractions Passes 2017: Despite of not being a free choice, it offers great savings in admissions on 4 great attractions at one price: Lion Country Safari, Miami Seaquarium, Museum of Discovery & Science and ZooMiami. If you haven’t done so yet, plan your visit for free to Miami Children’s Museum on the third Friday of each month from 3:00 to 9:00 pm. Don’t miss their latest interactive exhibit “DINO ISLAND: Where the robotic dinosaurs come to life to create a magical adventure for the entire family. Through guided tours, theater shows, and self-directed play, children will learn about ancestry, adaptation, extinction, evolution, and other unforgettable science! For kids who like to be active, Oleta River State Park is the place to be. Six dollars gets the whole family into this natural playground perfect for biking, nature walks and kayaking through mangrove-lined waterways. And, looking for more cultural events for kids? The program Culture Shock Miami offers $5 tickets to students ages 13-22 at performing arts venues around the city. The dance performance Volcanic at Miami Theater Center; the film Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead at Coral Gables Art Cinema; and the musical Piaf, Voz y Delirio at Miami-Dade County Auditorium are all part of this summer’s program. Comenzaron las vacaciones escolares y los niños están listos con mucha energía para divertirse durante estos meses de descanso. Ahora ¿Qué hacemos con los niños en vacaciones? Buscar alternativas variadas y económicas para nuestros niños y jóvenes a veces resulta una tarea titánica; Es por eso que esta edición la dedicamos exclusivamente a revisar las opciones generales para compartir en familia durante las vacaciones y no morir financieramente en el intento.
Comencemos por listar lo que ofrece el Sistema de Bibliotecas Públicas de Miami-Dade County:
Con su programa mensual, las bibliotecas presentan una opción bien completa que incluye música, espectáculos, shows de títeres y magia y mucho más. Busque en cualquier sede los programas la primera semana de cada mes y planee la participación de sus niños en estos eventos gratuitos de acuerdo a su edad e interés pues incluye desde bebes hasta adolescentes.
- Programa de Lectura: Motivando la lectura durante el verano, la biblioteca ofrece un programa semanal para que los niños reporten los libros, cuentos, revistas y artículos que lean. La mejor recompensa es el amor por la lectura pero al fin del programa también se rifan fabulosos premios. Este año el programa se ofrece desde el 10 de Junio hasta el 5 de agosto, 2017.
- Pases a museos: La familia puede utilizar la biblioteca como un lugar desde donde explorar otros centros culturales de Miami utilizando el Museum Pass: una tarjeta para acceso gratuito que se puede solicitar y que permite que hasta cuatro miembros de la familia tengan acceso a 10 museos distintos del condado, incluyendo HistoryMiami, Viscaya Museum & Gardens, y el Frost Art Museum y el nuevo Frost Museum of Science.

Bowling: El programa nacional Kids Bowl Free permite que los niños y jóvenes de hasta 15 años puedan jugar bowling gratuitamente durante todo el verano con solo alquilar los zapatos.
